Mariners v Fowler FC

The missing number 10 role...........

I dont think either of them have the physical presence at this level to truly be our "No 10". Fowler doesnt look that big but he is very strong and wont be muscled off the ball easily.

(Awaits Gumps love in to start)

we've had one number 10 - pondeljak. it's the only role he is really suited to. his one job is to receive the ball and create. we never really set up with a strict number 10 role for him to play in though - he always had a lot of defensive work to do, not all of which he actually did... nevertheless, he was that guy.

. but tommy was always one of our smallest guys too, is that why he was never really (according to dibo) deployed properly?

. again excuse my naivety, but i don't know if i was talking about a number 10 (admittedly never really understanding what a number 10 is). in my suggestion is the number 10 travis, playing as a slightly backward forward? :ashamed:

So are you advocating a 4-4-1-1 or a 4-3-1-2?

. i honestly don't know anymore ::)

. 4-4-1-1 ;D but was also talking about a back 3 earlier so who knows

. just seeing where fowler was positioning himself i was thinking why don't we try that? preferable someone with balls skills ... and it would mean only one of our forwards would be constantly offside :p

I think you are on the right track Bikingirl.....Mrdja was holding up the ball really well against the Fury....but both Matty and Dylan are too similar to Mrdja in their play and positioning so make it easy for the opposition to defend against.  What we need is Mrdja and someone who is nippy and technically good and can shoot....not too sure that either Travis or Mcglinchey can shoot, but I'm sure they would provide enough of a difference to our holding forward player to cause the opposition defence some problems and maybe create some space for the midfield to come "flooding through" (oh wouldn't that be a sight to see)

3412 or 4323 who gives a shit!! Pass the ball to a guy in your team, get the ball forward, move around a bit, mark tightly and when you get a chance put the bloody ball in the net! Welcome to Football 101 with Andre_1 It's a simple game guys!

IMO NQF play a 441 + Fowler. His role is " Do whatever the f**k you need to do"

With Talay in the side he was more of a forward. Without Talay he is a forward for about 15 mins and a box to box mid for the rest.

lol I've gotta say I don't know a lot about the tactical side of the game but this makes sense to me

and what happened to the days when we could get the ball up the field quickly, with 2 or 3 passes (note: not hoofing it aimlessly up the park straight to an opposition player and then watch it come back fast, with opposition player/s attached) and score? I don't know if this is right but I think the majority of our goals have come this way in the past.

but adz, if we play direct, it's long ball rubbish. if melbourne do it, it's attacking with intent...

He certainly does cover some ground. I don't think he is playing the type of footy NQ were hoping for because of their injury situation but he seems to be really putting in.

Probably because Archie is faster than most defenders. Our longer balls hitting the opposition most of the time doesn't help either.

I honestly think we have been most threatening when we just pass it quickly - even if a lot of that is from side to side, holes will open and we at least have the ball, meaning the other team have little chance of scoring.
I guess the absence of this comes down to Travis and McGlinchey being slightly out of form and not used as often as they were early in the season.
Also - as Mick stated earlier in the thread, a lot of teams are familiar with them now so they know how to deal with them better.

Archie did well with big Alsopp beside him. He'd think all his Christmases had come at once with 2 big guys beside him.
I'd have him in Yellow too, I don't have to like him first.
