Plenty of Brisbane Roar players are murmuring that they want to move away because of the Bakrie groups failure to pay on time on multiple occasions. We could get someone decent for cheap if we play our cards right. Who do people think we should target?

I doubt we'd be asking you to pay his full wages, we send a lot of young players out on loan to lower division clubs in England and I'm pretty sure we cover most of the wages in exchange for giving them a run in their first team.

If you're only allowed players over 20 then McAleny is probably one of the best, depending on what you need. We have a few over 20 centre backs but our best attackers other than McAleny are all either younger or in the first team (ie Ross Barkley).

Hopefully you do get someone, I've heard about your qualities at producing young players before and it would be a great opportunity for our players to play on a bigger stage.
Perfect we need CB's and strikers. Hope we get one of each but I think we looking local and young for the CB.

Unfortunately the FFA (the Australian governing body) put in place restrictions on loan deals saying that clubs who loan players the full wage of the player contributes to the cap (even if said club isn't paying that wage) (because it was being used to get better players without using the salary cap) his wage would most likely be more than half of our salary cap putting us over cap most likely. The only way I can see it working is if he gets registered as our "marquee" and Everton pay his wages or a majority at least of them.
Joyful you bring up a good point.
We could afford players via loan deals where maybe others can't because we have either cap room or the marquee as you say to bring in loanees.
E.g. We could use the new double marquee to get a CB and a striker from Everton allowing them to pay most of the wages and We wouldn't have to worry about the cap.
Maybe next year!

Broich - the guy is quality.
Henrique - regular scorer.
North - handy centre back.

Can't afford any of them though....

Looks like we have made an offer to Heffernan.

HEIDELBERG United have slammed the FFA for failing to compensate state league clubs with their star player set to be poached by Central Coast Mariners.

Striker Dan Heffernan is on the verge of accepting a one-year deal from the A-League club, but not before lining up in tomorrow night’s (Wednesday) FFA Cup Round of 16 clash at home to fellow former NSL side Sydney United.

Heffernan, who polled the most votes in last season’s National Premier Leagues Victoria (NPLV) Gold Medal count but was ineligible, has exploded for Heidelberg in recent seasons after an initial stint with Shepparton.

Heidelberg coach George Katsakis said Heidelberg and other state league clubs needed to be compensated if the likes of Heffernan, 28, were poached.

HEFFERNAN: MY A-LEAGUE HOPES

“He (Heffernan) has been offered a contract which he hasn’t accepted just yet, but we’ll wait until after tomorrow’s game and some decisions will be made,’’ Katsakis

“I agree it (the FFA Cup) puts them in the shop window and in terms of development that’s what it’s about, but from a club perspective we invest a lot of money in these players and when we lose them we get nothing in return, that’s what’s upsetting. We don’t get looked after.

“We don’t mind doing the hard work and finding quality players but it’s time for the FFA to go back and have a look at how they’re going to help the grassroots clubs.

“If they want clubs to produce we need to be rewarded for our investment.

“I’m ecstatic about Daniel and all my players being looked at, because that’s my goal as a coach, but from a club perspective we need a bit more acknowledgment.”

Katsakis also revealed that former A-League keeper Griffin McMaster will return between the sticks after he was dropped for the Round of 32 win away to Broadmeadow Magic after calling for Adam Goodes to be “deported”.

Football Federation Australia said it “condemns the content of the tweets sent from Griffin McMaster’s personal twitter account” in a statement just before the game.

“Football Federation Australia (FFA) applauds Heidelberg United Football Club for standing goalkeeper Griffin McMaster down from tonight’s Westfield FFA Cup match following a series of offensive tweets this afternoon.”

But Katsakis said the McMaster had been

“It’s been dealt with and we’re all satisfied that he’s done the appropriate things (since), so he’ll start (against Sydney United),” Katsakis said.

So do you guys reckon that might mean no McAleny or what ever his name is from Everton.

Not necessarily so. Arnie used to constantly state "he'd like 3 players fighting for each spot" (& heard him say it interview 2 weeks ago)

Pretty sure I've heard /seen Walmsley reciprocate Arnie's words himself, so for Strikers that makes:
  • O'Donovan
  • Heffernan
  • & Who ???
McAleny still could be a 'goer' with Everton paying his wages outside of the cap as a Marquee, leaving one more spot for another foreign/overseas player (4 out of max.5) still available.

Also new changes introduced by the FFA to the rules surrounding "Marqee Players" means a team can have x2 Foreign, instead of the previous x1 Foreign & x1 Australian.

Still a bit to happen. I expect to see Adelson, Berry and Buhagiar to be 3 outside the cap NYL players with the top team, Heffernan to be signed, hopefully Conor McAleny on loan (to be paid by Everton outside the cap?)

Don't be surprised if a defender leaves very soon which may leave room in the cap for half a year of Wilko after Korea.

I sympathize with guy, $3,000 compensation from an A-League club is sweet'F'All.

However it should be noted that A-League clubs also can lose money on players they have put time & money into. Players coming off contracts are alwats at risk of going on 'a-free' which is why it's soooooo important to have a good handle on your squads contracts.

Rostyn Griffiths is a good case for example, he was about to go off contract with us when he was looking for a move to Asia. He did the club a 'solid' & signed with Chinese Super League club Guangzhou Evergrande for an Australian record amount (@ the time) that earned the Mariners a transfer fee of upwards of $800,000. He could've waited a few more months & gone on 'a-free'.

State League clubs should be looking to 'tie players-up' in more than just 'one year deal's'. That way they'll have more of a 'bargaining chip' to recoup/ or capitalise on one of their 'in-demand' players.

The FFA should also provide more assistance/governance/penalties of transfer deals amongst all clubs at both State-to-National as well as State-to- InterState, which is now starting to happen with a lot more of NPL players migrating/ or-poached to the FFV's NPL (must be more cash down there on offer ???)

Either way something has change.

The 28-year-old, born in Manchester, was plying his trade for Salford City in England about four years ago when an unlikely call came from the Shepparton Soccer Club in Victoria’s Goulburn North East Football Association.
Looking for a change of pace after his grandmother passed away — Heffernan was her carer — the striker jumped at the opportunity, which came about just weeks after he put his details on a website promoting opportunities for Brits looking to play abroad.
So when Warriors coach George Katsakis called and said he was signing him without a trial, Heffernan felt compelled to try his luck in Melbourne.
“I honestly had no idea where Shepparton was, but I enjoyed every moment of the six months I was up there,” Heffernan said.
“It was different, being from the city and then going to the country, but I loved it.
“Then it was through a mutual friend between myself and George Katsakis that he got in touch with me when I was back in England.
“We had a Skype call and he said straight away that I want you signed. Obviously I’ve been at Heidelberg ever since, now I’m in my third year.”

So Katsakis checked a website and made a Skype call to sign a 25 year old English player, doesn't sound like they invested very much at all other than paying his semi pro wages.

I can appreciate Sydney United having a valid argument however given their investment in a player like Mile Jedinak who was developed through the juniors and brought through into the senior team and then into the A League.
