Things have changed a lot over the years, but one thing has remained constant and that is our love of the Mariners. People come and go, some like to post a lot and others just like to read. It's up to you how you participate in the community!

If posting is not your thing, you can interact in other ways, including voting on polls, and unlock options only available to community members.

ccmfans.net is not only for Mariners fans either. Most of us are bonded by our support for the Mariners, but if you are a fan of another club (except the Scum, come on, we need some standards), feel free to join and get into some banter.

Mariners Squad - HAL 11 - 2015/2016

my brother in law has been suggesting this for months. I'd be happy to have him he's a born goal scorer.
previously I'd have considered it unlikely, especially as I thought he was planning to retire this year though apparently not, but the Hutch connection may influence - they go way back starting out professionally together with Archie even staying with the Hutchinsons for a while. you could tell there was much warmth between the two after Hutch's last game.
I think it's certainly possible therefore, and would be happy with it too - I imagine Archie could make something of good combos with Ferreira and Caceres

I was just thinking the other day.....spending time online and you hear a bit about what players other people think are the best players in the league, especially at the attacking end of the field (and goalkeeping, for that matter). It occurred to me that we don't really have anybody who the general HAL supporters would consider one of the top in the league, especially at the attacking end. And maybe my memory's failing me, but it's been a while since we had that. Ibini maybe? And that was back when he was still bloody lazy. Simon hasn't been that for a good few years. It says something about our recruitment, but watching teams like Melbourne Victory play, with a number of players who would at least be up for consideration of any HAL XI team, and we just seem to lack that 'elite player' factor.

It's a worry, and I hope next year we're not going to suffer too much from the bad recruitment decisions that lead into this year (or if Charlesworth is actually going to do the right thing and stay the f*** out of the way of recruitment)
MONTY?

It may surprise people inside the yellow echo chamber, but I don't think fans of other clubs rate Monty at all.

That's not a surprise, many didn't rate Maty, Trent, Wilko, Mile or Ollie. They've all played at the World Cup and/or Asian Cup but still aren't as good as (insert Sydney or Melbourne player's name here). I even read the other day about how Rostyn came back a much better player from his stint in China than he was at the Mariners when he took many months to approach the form he showed for us.

Other fans don't watch our games - you can see it in the ratings. They're happy to comment but don't worry about actually watching the game.

We should consider Archie Thompson. I realise he is old but still scored 11 goals this year and said today he may have to leave Victory. He would be a great asset to help train and mentor the kids.

Archie? No brainer if we could get him. Still scores goals for fun and would be like a marquee for us. I think he would thrive on been the main man here and mentoring some young guys. Also would have a point to prove that he isn't yet over the hill.

Fair point pjennings. Even when Matty was the golden boot winner, everybody was still having a circle jerk around Archie Thompson. You're right that our players will never get the same respect because neutrals just don't seem to watch them. I wonder why that is. Even some of the other non-SFC/MV teams seem to get more respect from the neutrals. Actually, the neutrals have always absolutely hated Matty. But f*** 'em. Nobody rates us and we don't care.

Hard to tell how much of that is an accurate reflection on our recruitment. Of course, our recruitment has always been 'find young talent. Make it awesome. Sell it'. Except Mossy even failed at that last year. Our recruitment strategy was 'find young talent. Sign it up. Ignore it'.

While there are obvious commercial concerns around that strategy, it's also a vicious cycle; we do that because we don't have the funds because we don't have the advertising because we don't have the supporters/neutral views, and we don't have any of that because we don't have any of these highly respected/exciting players (generally speaking).

McBreen whats back in with the Mariners now too. Haha

“When he [Hutchinson] told me the date and then I found out our last game was a week later I was gutted,” McBreen confessed. “It would have been real good to get out there and have a kick with the boys, and surely a beer afterwards, but I am sure I will catch up with ‘Hutch’ when I get back for my break in June. We’ll reminisce about the good and bad times and I’ll hit him up for a gig now that he’s second in charge at the Mariners.”

I'd take Thompson over McBreen tbh.

If MC wants to spend the funds Archie could be our Aussie marquee. He's well known and a proven scorer.
I think he'd put bums on seats and entertain. Probably end up a crowd favourite.

I like it, but then we really will be (to borrow from Spike Milligan) the A-League's first above ground cemetery.

I'd take them both. Macca would be cheap, Archie relatively for his class. Macca is also versatile and can play the number 10 role if required. If we also resign Matty Simon on a cheap deal with bonus incentives, then we could have Matty, Danny,Archie and an Everton kid maybe as our strike force. We would score goals and leave room in the cap hopefully for a couple of decent cb's..

Danny McBreen will be available. He reckons he's good for one more year, and from what he's said he'd like to be back with us.
