Mariners Squad 2024/2025 ALM and ACL Elite

He was better than both against Auckland. There's nothing to think about.

Being on the right compared to the left doesn't account for some of his horrible marking and poor passes that have lead to goals. He is honkingly out of form and was when he was playing on the left when next to sains and Tappy before they got injured.

Nobody thinks Paull is our best defender. He is a back up. He has been thrown there due to circumstances. But to be fair there are others who would be higher up the chopping block than he is.
Paull has been responsible for more goals than anyone else
His lack of aggression and positioning has been poor
Just a squad player at best

Regarding upcoming squad changes..........aren't newbies ineligible to play in the ACL Elite games? If that's the case it will be even tougher to compete in the Cup since we lose some depth and cant use the replacements

This season we're feeling the results of Peil's disastrous experiment with Wilkshire as Academy coach.

We lost a whole crop of Academy kids, that's why we don't have any Academy graduates ready for A-League level between Steele/Sasha's gen and Eames/Peraic-Cullen's. So players like Steele/Paull/Feijao/Theoharous/Kuol lack competition because players like Lucas Sciluna, Arthur De Lima, Parker Williams, Rocco Smtih and their contemporaries aren't ready for A-League minutes.

We had to import some squaddies with a lot more speculative potential, like Wilson, Ngor, Wenzel-Halls, Paull, Millard, Deng, Warshawsky, Pavlesic. While losing players like Cameron Windust, Lachlan/James Bayliss, Patrick Beach, Aydan Hammond, Dean Larson, Jakob Cresnar, Zach Zoricich, Maksim Kasalovic.

Couple that with injuries to the few remaining graduates ready for significant minutes in Nico Duarte and Brad Tapp and we really struggle.
We are feeling the disastrous effects of several of Peil’s appointments, coupled with the staff he drove away You are right about the academy. The other big giant glaring elephant in the room is the apparent absence of a proper fitness coach. The injuries are one thing, but the boys genuinely look unfit and lacking, particularly when up against a team like Auckland. The comparison was stark.

What has happened to our scouting network? Obviously Serg was a big part of that, but who is scouting now? What happened to our Analyst? Obviously the Vibe Managed is gone. (I know there are mixed reviews on that one.)

it’s looking awful glum, currently and even more so, with none of our own ready to hatch.

This one I can’t get my head around. The bloke we had got us through AFC cup and a heavy workload while looking great. How much better could a replacement possibly perform?

It's pretty straightforward, nepotism.
That or perhaps a compulsion to put his mark on key areas across the organisation. Maybe he thought the new bloke would take us up a notch but it was always going to be a tough ask given we were already in a great spot IMO.

Yeh I think Rich really thought that all he needed to do was apply some expert "Anytime Fitness" knowledge and all of a sudden the Mariners would be a huge success, he always made little comments about players "athletic abilities and natural strength bla bla", I'll never forget how he said Kelechi John was the player he was most excited about just because he watched him squat and lift in the gym one time.

So yeh, I feel Rich was really trying to get an edge in the S and C department and it's not really paid dividends. Would take Brice back In a heartbeat thank you.

Just a note - saying “we don’t have a proper fitness coach” is doing a bit of a disservice to Cade Mapu who by all accounts is fantastic. He obviously has to work within the parameters set by the Head of Performance though…
Analyst Liam is still there (afaik).

It was Dean Benton's appointment that most concerned me. I looked at the blurb that came with his appointment and saw he had coached strength and conditioning to a massive number of teams across a massive number of sports.
However, he never seemed to have stayed long with any one sport or team. That caused me a little concern.
I do not know the different requirements of strength and conditioning across all these sports but I would be surprised if one size fits all.
I think I may have felt more comfortable with someone whose entire career had been in football like Andrew Clark.
Just y thoughts but we do seem to be having a lot of injuries this year.

I hadn’t actually heard Cade’s name mentioned until yesterday. Is he different to the guy originally appointed to replace Brice? Comment yesterday said “young and experienced.” Otherwise I know nothing about him,
Squad does seem to lack last seasons fitness though.
