What's the Doka love? He doesn't attack and he can't defend.
Has no pace either. Storm >>>> as a RB and he doesn't have the strength to play RM.
Both our fullbacks were dreadful yesterday

Agree on Doka. Regularly out of position and is not linking well either yet going forward. Storm was outstanding defensively last year, surprising many of us, and was also a great contributor in a lot of our build up play. Has a great temperament too.

I think as has been said, we've been through severe disruption. Losing that many starting players is hard enough. Losing your coach and his staff five minutes before your season starts is about as disruptive as it gets. They need time to gel. And they need leadership while that happens. Is MJ a great leader. I hope so. Though he hasn't yet struck me as having that same burning fire to succeed that I saw in a wounded Staj or a hungry wolf Monty. And the assistant coach probably hasn't even unpacked his suitcase yet.
In terms of player leadership...

Cummings was not just a great player for us. He was a huge personality that clearly gave confidence to all those around him. This season... well it's always hard when your best player (Tulio) is not a leader. And after Danny the player that is the best suited, Maxxy, is still only a youngster and can't be that easy to lead players like Torres, Doka and Tulio I imagine. Triantis though young, was also massive as a lead by example player - the type who wouldn't take a backward step from anyone and give no respect to wankers like City when they put on airs. I haven't seen that quality in Paull. (shit, he does have two "l's right? Because he stole one of Max's :innocent: ).

Anyway, those are the three challenges I see.
- Does our coach have what it takes? Still an unknown.
- Do we have enough leadership across the park, the kind that will help us gel and perform at a high level consistently? I'm not sure we do right now. But I do think Storm would help.
- How long will it take to overcome the disruption and gel? Best done in pre season, as teams that are losing will always start to doubt the system and or themselves, coaches or other players. But we have to play the cards we've been dealt now.

Great post.
He stole Max's L. Brilliant

Having seen 2 A-league games and 3 AFC games ( the latter on TV ) there are a few players whom I am not sure about as to whether they will really benefit our team .Doka is hot and cold,Wilson looks a bit lost,Alou is often anonymous,Torres perhaps one dimensional at A-League level anyway,Theo too tricky but ineffective and Smith tentative and lacking physicality. Also DWH has not really done much to show his worth but there is a good player there.Same goes for Paull -I thought he had a good game on Sunday..

Hpoefully the first few named players can pick up as they get used to the new coach and his system.

I'm genuinely worried that all the players Monty picked were in need of the Monty and Serg development magic, hence why Monty picked them and let players like Bayliss go....

Now they're just the same underwhelming players they've always been for the clubs they've always played for.

Hope I'm wrong...

Looks like we’ve signed Luca Scicluna a young Aussie/Maltese midfielder who was last at Wolves in England. His brother is getting game time at WSW.
Bright young player.
Andy Bernal posted a photo with him 3 minutes ago.

Edit- I would assume he’s more of a academy signing, wouldn’t be surprised if he’s a scholar perhaps. Very tidy player.

Garang has played just 11 minutes in his last game and was on the bench against Ajax. Newcastle should just cut his current loan to Volendam and loan him back to us. His combo with Alou would be good to watch!!
Should never have left when he did. These kids have 1 good season, barely starting though and off they go. Burns their career because they aren't actually ready.
A tale as old as time.

The counter to that is the fact that a career in professional sport can be an injury away from being finished overnight…. So when life changing money is there, you would be mad not to take it.

To look at Kuol - he wouldn’t have been on more than $100k a year in Aus if that. Overnight he gets offered 25 years worth of that wage in one go.… it’s naive to say ‘just stay in Aus for a few more years and learn your trade’. As a selling club it’s super unlikely his value would ever have been higher either after the all stars match and a World Cup. No way he would have still been here for the next World Cup cycle.

Is garang really on 2.5m a year?50k a wk? I'd be doubtful.

Its not naive at all. Its played out so many times the evidence is thete. The success rate is f**k all really.

I know Garang. After he signed for Newcastle I asked him if they'd started paying him yet, and he said yep.
I asked him how much and he told me $43,000aud per week. 4 year deal.
I know he won't mind me sharing because I'll qualify it with this.
His family worked so hard, for so long to survive from having nothing. The Kuol's take care of each other and that money is shared to take care of everyone (deserved too, imo).
There's no guarantee there'll be more after that either, it's football. I hope there is and goes on to a long and successful career. Alou too, and maybe one-day Didi.
Money aside a move like that comes along and it's a helluva opportunity, and one that may never come again.
I'd have taken an opportunity like that too. Worth the shot for sure
