Mariners sign Justin Pasfield - Confirmed

The Central Coast Mariners have moved to strengthen the depth in their goalkeeping ranks, with the signing of North Queensland Fury gloveman Justin Pasfield for the next two seasons.

Pasfield, who has been the Fury’s first choice custodian for much of the Fury’s life as a Hyundai A-League club thus far, will join the Mariners from next season, through until the end of the 2012/13 campaign.

The 25-year-old heads to the Central Coast in the knowledge he will have to fight hard to break into the side, following the recent form of incumbent Mariners’ custodian Mathew Ryan.

“It’s a new challenge, a new step for me. They have a ‘keeper there that is very young and doing very well, so there’s a challenge for me to go down there and do well,” said Pasfield.

Mariners Head Coach Graham Arnold worked with Pasfield during the Qantas Olyroos qualification campaign for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and says he’s delighted to have the ex Sydney FC and Newcastle shot-stopper.

“You need two good ‘keepers and unfortunately Jess Vanstrattan has had a knee reconstruction so we’re unsure about that side of it, but Justin gives us another good experienced ‘keeper. He’s a guy who has played two full years up there in North Queensland and has done exceptionally well,” Arnold said.

Great signing. Top quality bench cover for Matty Ryan. Looks like we're letting JVS go.

Paid to sit on a bench, there are a few hobos in Gosford that would do that for soup!

Ryan is on minimum wage as he was signed to sit on the bench for JVS. We don't know how often we might need to call apon Pasfield over the next 2 years, especially if Ryan is going to be away alot with the Young Socceroos and Olyroos.

I suspect Pasfield will be number 1 unless Ryan improves his ball handling. Although his reactions are great there are too many dropped balls.

See you later Jess Van Stratten. I've got the feeling that Arnie isn't a fan. Who remembers that Skype call between JVS and two blokes pretending to be Shane Smeltz and Adam Griffiths? Judging by that, Jess likes to speak his mind.

Really not sure what the thinking behind this is. For an 18yo Matty Ryan has been unbelievable. A little bit nervy at times but completely understandable. Great shot stopper and the sky's the limit for him. Maybe I've forgotten how good Danny was when he first came in for JC, but I reckon Ryan is better at the same age. He has saved our bacon in more than one game this season.

I'd like us to stick with Ryan for the rest of the season and next year he could do a "Langerak". The thing I don't understand is Pasfield signing for us to be a no. 2. He's first choice now so why go to a club to be a deputy? I'm thinking he's either been told he's first choice or he thinks Fury might not survive this season. I don't know, seems a strange one to me. The obvious one is JVS is out the door.

Arnie and all the coaching staff rate Ryan very highly. I very much doubt that we're bringing Pasfield in to be number 1. Pasfield would be reliable cover if Ryan was going through a bad patch of form, gets injured or is called up to the Young Socceroos/Ollyroos.

Ryan is an investement for the future and if he has this whole season under his belt, next season when Pasfield arrives there will be no reason for Ryan to lose his starting place.

No Danny has nothing to do with us now. He signed a contract with Wellington as a free agent. Melbourne Victory are interested in him and you would think the same with Fury and the Jets.

Ryan may be a young up and coming keeper but he is very short.. he can have all the skill in the world just like Fabian Barthez but that won't help him grow..and a great keeper needs to to have height.
i'm just on 6 foot and when i saw ryan the other day he was shorter than i

im a Ryan Fan but sorry he is just to short, Pasfield for number 1

Given is a freak, great keeper..
Ideally very short… there isn’t many keepers that can get away with it..
