Mariners sign Justin Pasfield - Confirmed

See you later Jess Van Stratten. I've got the feeling that Arnie isn't a fan. Who remembers that Skype call between JVS and two blokes pretending to be Shane Smeltz and Adam Griffiths? Judging by that, Jess likes to speak his mind.

Perhaps the club thinks he's done a JC, or don't want to take a risk signing him again. I believe his contract was only for this season.

Maybe I'm a bit slow, but why haven't we gone after Vukovic, seeing that he is only on a one year contract with Wellington?

Is there something i'm missing?

also, pretty sure Pasfield has sat on the bench as a striker before

I welcome this signing.

It is obvious that Arnie is moving around the salary cap and getting as much space as possible. He can then shop around for some key talent.

JVS and Danny are far more expensive than Pasfield. You are just wasting cap space in a position where Australia has an abundance of talent.

Thanks Mick. I understand the salary cap restraints but that leads me to my next question:

Vukovic
- second in line at Wellington
- would be more willing to take a pay cut to come home to CCM

Pasfield
- first choice at NQLD
- would have to completely relocate to CCM

Surely those two factors would cancel out their market rates?

I also don't see why Wellington would pay a huge rate for two goalkeepers, while NQLD would pay minimal wage for one GK?

If Pasfield is to be number 2, and if the reasoning is to save money under the cap, surely Hendo would be cheaper and good enough to be a reserve.

firstly, for vukovic to come back home it would push ryan back into 2nd fiddle, and after the season he's had i wouldnt want to stop his growth and game time, and danny is rumoured to be going somewhere else anyway.

secondly, correct me if i'm wrong but i think pasfield is from sydney ? so he might want to take a pay cut to move closer to home, would be a quality number 2, especially when ryan is away with the national team

I initially questioned why we'd want to get Pasfield, but after some more thought, you have to ask the question would either of our youth keepers be good enough to be a reserve for Matty yet?
If the answer is no, and assuming JVS won't be around, you have to have a quality reserve, so I assume that was the thinking of the club.

With the form of Ryan, I certainly hope Pasfield isn't automatically the number one keeper.

Hoepfully in the pre-season the competition for starting keeper will bring out the best in the both of them.

Danny is going to Perth for decent money.

Pasfield will get more job security on the same wage at Gosford as North Queensland place in next season's comp is not guaranteed.

I would say that Ryan as incumbent is the automatic number one and that Pasfield has to take his chances when and if they come.
