But demanding that they always put in 200% is not.

Pedantry alert.

This is both unrealistic and impossible.
Maximum is 100%.

Not so.

Your assertion that 100% is the maximum is based on an assumption on your behalf that 100% IS the maximum. Impeccable logic - I'm sure you'll agree...lol. Percentages are ratios of one measurable quantity compared to a standard. Who is to say that the maximum is the standard? Perhaps FP was referring to an expected and realistic level of performance that, with additional effort, can be surpassed. That makes more sense to me.

By your definition, the only way to achieve 100% maximum effort is to die as a result. Such a definition of 100% is, to me, both unrealistic and impossible.

Whatever the definition of 100%, it is clear that Caceres and Elrich fell way short. Now's the time for Lawrie to be applying a swift kick up the arse to both of these guys and to see him do it publicly bodes well for the coming season.

To cut this short, the question must be: 'Did Caceres and Elrich complete the tasks requested of them by Lawrie?' Judging by Lawrie's response the answer would have to be no.

I think I remember a report from the Sydney match where Wales played, and people were commenting about his ability to run all day and get involved. Also remembered that folks here were pleased with Travis even though he only put in 10 minutes that night (straight off the plane too).

I'd say that sort of performance was what Lawrie was looking for out of Caceres and Elrich - and they obviously didn't deliver. Maybe he's reminding Caceres and Elrich that there other players (one already signed and another one hopefully, perhaps?) who may end up challenging these 'walkers' for the starting 11 and bench spots this season.

Thanks Clarence ... you sorted it perfectly ... however, had my little tongue planted in my cheek when i responded to Atomic...

An even shorter version ...

If Caceres and Elrich don't get their fingers out, they'll be warming the benches!

LOL,  looking back on the the posts, Atomic may have been trying to "out-pedantic" Ursus with quibbles about quantifying "what is 100%?".

Yes you are right, Caceres and Elrich have to extract the digit!
Unless Lawrie hears a sound similar to the sound of popping champagne corks before the next match these two guys are involved in, it may be a long season for them!

Can we add another name to that ? at the risk of being sent to coventry, Nik Mrdja ?

I thought we all agreed not to mention THAT name on this forum anymore! (Mrdja *spit cough splutter*)

Yeah that player too, he's at risk of playing a lot of NYL this season if he cannot convince Lawrie he's worth the effort of training into the senior squad AND Matty and D-Mac stay fit.

No problemo, he's not exactly persona non grata, but I think a lot of us are annoyed he's got yet another season to milk the Mariners' Cash Cow. I do hope the latest extension to his contract is the last unless he can come through this season fit for the majority of the games and keen to work for a spot.

I really hope you are right Shipwreck, but the last FOUR seasons suggest otherwise.

Yes a number of established Mariners players are on their final season. I think Hutch, Wilko and maybe Danny are too.

Players like McGlinchey, Doig and Travis are still in their 20s, so IF these players can handle the differences in the A-League compared to what they are used to in the UK, then they may push for spots against those established players.

I think this season is shaping up with less dread thanx to these signings and it will be interesting to see what players form the main team after a few rounds.

I've heard it every other year too. Don't expect anything different. Can go fishing for all I care.

Mrdja, Caceres and Elrich only have a year to go on contract. They really have to perform this year!!
You would assume that there is quite a bit of money tied up in these three. If they do not fire this year makes for an interesting off season next year.
I for one am hoping beyond hope that Mrjda and Elrich fires. They both have things that are missing from our squad. Mrjda has pace and skill on the ball and has one of the most lethal shots in the league (when he wants to get them on target) and Elrich can beat a man with the ball at his feet even though he is missing his speed of old. His delivery from wide is also unmatched in our squad, although that may prove to be false after this year.

As for Caceras, we know he has skill on the ball but his finishing is woeful and i just can not see him being able to add what is needed by an attacking mid.

Lets hope they all fire, for my hairlines sake.

Disagree. It has been a long time since i saw elrich beat a man with the ball at his feet. He just turns and passes back to porter or wilko/boogs.

I think porter these days has a better cross because crosses from elrich are getting rarer and rarer. I hope elrich proves me wrong, but i think he will be first out the door at season end.

Any word on how/if Mrdja played last night?

Elrich beat a man down the flank in the last ACL game and was willing to get to the byline. With confidence back after surgery, he will offer more than Caceras, who i believe will have to impress from the bench.
