Thanks Mitch. With them having so many starting 11 players out of action I think we should have won.

They didnt have anyone important missing, and we no doubt had trialists and macca and simon making cameos

Yeah true, but I did hope the calibre of our trialists was above outstanding...

They had a good line up which has been together playing for many weeks. Still a good result and we are still undefeated this pre season.

Central Coast Mariners Football Manager Lawrie McKinna admits his team was the better side in tonights 2-all pre-season trial match draw against Hyundai A-League newcomer Gold Coast United, and is disappointed not to have come away with more from the match.

"I thought we had it won, we were comfortable, we dominated, and had a couple of clear cut chances, you should be comfortable with ten men," McKinna said.

"Credit to Gold Coast, they still had that drive, (Jason) Culina was still driving them. Their first goal, Hutch (John Hutchinson) went in to win the ball, he (Traore) went in to clear the ball, he made a break, went inside and got a deflected chance. Thats all they needed, it gave them a lift and we started to tire, because thats where we are at in pre-season, but we should have had it won, it was very disappointing.

"We were happy, the first fifteen minutes they gave everything they had, Danny made one great save, and their half chances came from us turning the ball over. Once we changed our shape I thought we were very comfortable.

"I think anyone is going to be a contender, they had a couple of boys missing, and while you can only play 11 players, they are going to be competitive. They have got a good squad, with a bit of depth there, and they showed that tonight, but I think its a bit too early to say, especially things like going through undefeated, they should have been defeated tonight.

"Theyll be competitive, and playing here in front of a good crowd with a good atmosphere will drive them on, theyre going to be a handy team," said McKinna.

After a dominant but scoreless first half, the Mariners went up through a Pedj Bojic free kick in the 48th minute, a carbon copy of strikes against Queensland State League side Logan United and a Capital Football select XI this pre-season.

"Boogs (Nigel Boogaard) should have scored early, and then we had a couple of chances as the half went on, but then we got the free kick, and it wasnt as though it was a fluke thats the third one (Pedj Bojic) has scored like that in five games, it was a bomb. It doesnt matter that they had a man sent off, they could have had 20 men on the field and it still would have gone in.

"Our other goal was well worked, and at that time we were well on top, but again, credit goes to them for coming back and showing that fighting spirit," said McKinna.

McKinna says the squad was honest in its assessment of the performance in the dressing room post match, and is ready to put plans in place to build on tonights result.

"The players had the words, it was quite good seeing the players taking control and having a bit of a go. When Adrian Caceres and Ahmad Elrich came on, they did less running than the boys already out there so that was disappointing. Adrian was up front, its not his usual position but you can still run and shout for the ball, but he didnt do that, and Ahmad as well, the two of them didnt do that so that was disappointing.

"(Scottish trialist Michael McGlinchey) is here for another week and we were quite happy with him. I dont think he spilled up the ball once, he was very tidy. Hed only done a weeks pre-season before he got here so Im sure hell get better. Its always good to get the ball and make things happen in midfield, so we were quite happy with him," McKinna said.

The Mariners pre-season continues next Saturday when they take on Wellington Phoenix at Apex Oval, Dubbo, Kick-off is at 6:00pm.

Little disappointing on a win level, but it speaks well of the way the squad is coming together as from the two media releases it sounded like we had the better of them even before the send off.

That said, as to GCU players out not really making a difference to their squad, mmmm...  I think Daniel Piorkowski, Adam Griffiths, Matt Osman and Joel Porter would make a difference to their team, and at the end of last year Minnicon was looking like the player in the A league I least wanted running at our back line...

Anyhow, sounds like Danny is truly back in form. Which is a huge plus. Pedj looking like he's going to make us highly dangerous from free kicks this season is another unforeseen gem.  Squad wise, Wales is not in atm obviously - but he obviously impressed and if/when signed will strengthen the squad further. Matty and Dylan look on track to be match fit by the opening round. And players who aren't giving 110% are getting blasted by the manager and squad!

I'm smelling steel...
steel is good... steel is very good...

We all know players who go missing cost teams games, and it personally drives me crazy when players who are subbed on with thirty or less to go (unless they are recovering form injury) don't seize the opportunity to run flat out and make an absolute nuisance of themselves with their fresh legs. Too many players still just try to ease themselves into the tempo of the game, almost like they are looking for permission or approval to play from their team mates before they start putting in and thereby unless the run of play goes their way, they make little initial impact, and before you know it there's only 5 to go by the time they are maybe even starting to look or feel lively. Whereas even just some added pace and pressure through consistent running makes an immediate significant contribution regardless of whether they are managing to actually do anything particularly useful with the ball. Clearly a reason why for mine why Gumps was so loved. Matty was pretty good value for an entire season when he wasn't even scoring for pretty much this fact alone. And then you also have the confidence factor displayed by someone like Nicky Travis who can manage to be note worthy with only 10 minutes of play as he's immediately involving himself and stepping up to the plate. Some players just get this... and we will say they have heart, mental strength or confidence... But clearly to win trophies you need those elements from your entire squad, and knowing what is clearly expected from you and knowing you won't get away with anything less, not from your coach or team mates is exactly the way it should be. But it certainly is not always the reality. So these demands are  extremely healthy. Demanding your team, manager or players always win is unrealistic and can be counter productive. But demanding that they always put in 200% is not. So I think this shows an excellent piece of pre season squad development is taking place.

Well done Lawrie and team.
Keep up the good work.
