Give Gumps another year!

I like Gumps as much as most people on this forum....BUT, I think he is past it.  It was obvious during our run in we have no pace in our midfield and Gumps is one who's getting older and slower.  I'd rather we let Gumps go and "replace" him with Murdocca or Barbiero, both of whom, have a far higher work rate, can last the 90 minutes and have plenty of pace.

Please do re-sign Gumprecht. "8. Central Coast" has a good ring to it.

as long as 9. Sydney and 10. Newcastle comes after that then it won't be so bad

(hehe, Jaza forgot there was a ten team comp next season)

Jaza has also been very cranky around here since his team went to shit.

If he is very cheap i think we will have to keep him.

1) Many of the top A-League players are off overseas, there is not a lot of obvious talent available.
2) With the GFC sponsorships will be down and money will be tighter than the proverbial.

Many on this forum are not seeing the big picture at the moment, expecting Mariners to spend heaps of dosh that does not exist on a diminishing pool of talent.

We do not have oodles of boodle like Gold Coast.

Thankyou. I have been waiting for someone mention this!

I dont know why people think gumps is so slow, and as a result unable to start, when we have drastically slower players, eg hutcho in the team. Gumps is like viddie, he knows when to make his runs, and when to conserve.

Since Tommy has gone it is only he and adrian who provide any movement going forward in the middle of the park.Osman is fitter, but not nearly as effective, and he is leaving.

Owens presumably leaving will leave a large chunk of cap, with gumps on little cash, and it being very unlikely, since we could not entice anyone for the ACL, that we shall not have a huge amount of options in that position, he is certainly worth a spot in the squad.

Of course he is.  Some people just have no idea what they are talking about.  Personally i'd start Gumps b4 Osman or Boogs or Kwasnik or Porter in midfield but he is so good as an impact player off the bench and Lawrie appears to have become so one dimensional....that he has now been pigeon-holed as an impact super-sub.

The reason that the crowd scream for Gumps is that he is a trier and a goer where as some of our squad barely seam interested at times.  The general crowd in the stand often have more Football knowledge that alot of the people that call them selves Marinators who occasionally (somewhat strangely) bag him.
They watch Hutcho stumble around turning into blind alleys and falling over and Osman hiding and scream for a player who has faith in his ability and will never leave you wondering.

Gumps will be an impact player off the bench because that is where he has proved to be effective. His starting games this season did not have the same effect as when he came on when the opposition were tired. This is not a criticism, we all get older, he is extremely effective in this role.

Ossman was just beginning to find his form again towards ther end of the season. He has great control and will be a loss. Fergie's gain.

I think the standard in the A-League last year passed a few players by, however I think next year the standard will drop back giving them an Indian summer. I do not think signing Kwassy or resigning Gumps is a bad move.

Another point to consider.

Those who are correlating our form slump with Fergie's departure obviously were not around in V2.  ::)

more like Miron's gain

ossie will be a huge loss if he stays fit - he is technically one of the best players in the mariner's squad and his work off the ball is very underestimated

Gumps had one of his best games against Melbourne down there in round 19. He hit a brick wall at 55 minutes and we conceded what, 3 goals after that. A player his age can only go for 90 minutes if they are playing the 90 minutes every week, and Gumps didn't back up good performances with more to warrant being a starting player every week.

I definately feel he adds more than we will get from whoever we replace him, and some that we will still have on our books. Feel free to join the crusade just begun!

I have always been a big fan of Gumprecht.

Re-sign Gumps ! MacKinna resign! (Could be a banner in that)

Gumps is technically superior to most of the squad, he has the ability to beat defenders going forward. His crosses are pinpoint, and his passing game is very good.

If he agrees to stay (and there would be a question mark over this given the shit he had to put up with from the club), I'd like to see him as an attacking mid.

What does that say about the rest of the squad?

Gumps is the only player we have who can control the ball in tight situations, get it on the deck and play to feet. He is so far above the rest of the rubbish in the team in the technical skill area. Seeing as our present coach seems to prefer to hire people like kwasnic, i doubt that his skills will be considered and he will be not offered another year.  :ashamed:

that he is technically better than most of them

Give Gumps another year? I'd say yes as an impact/off the bench player, but agree with comments about his tackling and aging legs. Lovely guy, always approachable.

If it wasn't for the past acrimony between Gumps and the club, I'd be hollering for him to get involved with the coaching of the NYL team with Damien Brown. Gumps already coaches, he is an inspirational personality to the club, the crowds love him, and he must be someone that juniors look up to. Perfect, IMHO, as a NYL coach. And let's face it, they couldn't get much worse than some of the games I saw our NYL play last season.

As for Osman, if Marinermick is right about Osman doing a lot of unnoticed work in the midfield, then when he gets to GCU, he will be freeing up Culina to go forward, if that's the case. And God help GCU's opposition if that centre partnering works out!
