ccmfans.net is the Central Coast Mariners fan community, and was formed in 2004, so basically the beginning of time for the Mariners. Things have changed a lot over the years, but one thing has remained constant and that is our love of the Mariners. People come and go, some like to post a lot and others just like to read. It's up to you how you participate in the community!

It only takes a few minutes, and joining will let you post your thoughts and opinions on all things Mariners, Football, and whatever else pops into your mind. If posting is not your thing, you can interact in other ways, including voting on polls, and unlock options only available to community members.

ccmfans.net is not only for Mariners fans either. Most of us are bonded by our support for the Mariners, but if you are a fan of another club (except the Scum, come on, we need some standards), feel free to join and get into some banter.

Give Gumps another year!

I definately feel he adds more than we will get from whoever we replace him, and some that we will still have on our books. Feel free to join the crusade just begun!

Handy to come off the bench for a spark when we need it.

He's past it as a starting 11 player even in this league imo.

Would he be happy to be a bench player on next to no dosh?

If so sign him up!

I heartily echo these sentiments.  The boost he gives to the team and the crowd cannot be underestimated.

He is definately worth another year and is already on a reduced salary (remember he was tucked up by the club already).
He's not fit enough to be a starting player (unless we have injuries) but gives us massive impact off the bench.
Gumps and Caceras seam to be the only middies on our roster who are capable of driving forward with purpose.

Can anyone with half a brain begrudge Gumpy another season when we have players like D'Appuzzo taking up spots in the squad.  Gumps is still vastly superior to most starting 11 players techically, he just doesn't have the legs anymore.

if we can't find anything better (and we're hardly being overwhelmed with alternatives), why not? he is getting older though, and he's certainly not getting any fitter or quicker.

I'd give him another year but I think he may have burnt some bridges with some of his comments and threatened court action. At the time it seemed to me the club only took him on another year due to legal advice. I really have no idea, just speculating. Not sure he's a LM favourite.

I'm sure if we don't re-sign him, he'll get picked up somewhere like NQ or the sheep, Glory even.

Agree, he is great off the bench. Really boosts the team for a good 10 minutes when we need one. Though, I don't think he would be happy coming on as an impact at the 60-70 minute mark when we're down or level and having the possibility of not even getting a run if we're up. I think we should keep him for a year if he'll agree to being an impact and not a starter and begin to look for a replacement youth whom can read the game as Gumpy can aswell as having the legs to run a full 90 minutes. Imo Evan (football superstar runner up)... or ofcourse myself ;)

should deffently give him another year. He always fires up the side more times than not when he comes on. if he gets shafted who else is there to do it?

I'm sure a big factor in that is that 90% of the crowd wake from their slumber and start making noise when they see him warming up.
Not that it matters of course, there's no denying that it does make a difference when he comes on; whether it's by his own on-field influence or his influence on the crowd doesn't matter if it gets the right result.

It would be interesting though, if Gumps were to leave, to see a "control" experiment where the crowd lifts without him on the field and see if it still has an effect.

My biggest fear is that without Gumps the only thing we'd have to lift the crowd would be Wave For Cash

is the implication then that we should sign him ahead of player X because he lifts the crowd?

if so, at what point do his aging limbs create more negatives than the crowd reaction?

The only issue with an older player is that they need regular game time to stay fit. A season of playing 10/15 mins or not at all and he will never be at real match fitness and (worse) likely to be injured.

Having said that, he ignites the crowd and is one of the few players we have who can actually pass the ball FFS.

Why not a deep lying DM role screening the back 4? His distribution and reading of the game is excellent and that role will conserve his legs a bit.

Keep him

this role requires a massive work rate and being able to tackle - unfortunately gumps doesn't has the legs any more and he often pulls out of tackles, especially headers
