Miller was, training with the squad today. Kyle was not there. The two injured CBs were basically training separately but joining in occasionally. Simon was central with Jordan lining up wide.

The idea of Simon being forced on the starting 11 needs to go away
Love PJs line up except that Simon should be a bit wider (on the bench). My final rant on Simon below;

I think we are making too many excuses for Matt and by doing this lowering our expectations.
As someone else mentioned, Matt Simon is the elephant in the room.
My points below are made because I want us to succeed this year. I’d LOVE to be proved wrong and have us get in the finals with him, but I’m not optimistic.
I know he works hard. I know he defends from the front. I know he is good in the air (or he used to be). I know he can out muscle opponents, but that’s just not good enough.
We need a striker whose stats show a good current scoring record at a high level, not a chronic underperformer for the last 4-5 years.

We need a striker who can create and convert scoring opportunities in open play. That is why good strikers are payed a premium after all.

We need a striker who can score in situations when the ball is moving, when he is under pressure from defenders, and when he is not one- on-one with a keeper. (Any striker worth their salt would drool at a scenario like that, right?). Sure, there is skill in taking a penalty, but let’s face it, a penalty is a gift, and other team members are also capable of taking them.

We need a striker who can score in situations other that set plays like corners. Tall defenders also manage to do this (think Wikco, Zwannie or even GG against Manly for example).

We need a striker who does not rely on their captaincy to get time on the pitch, nor to grab the ball and then assert a right to take any penalties. As captain he should be above this, and focus on the success of the team, not his own dubious goal record.

We need a striker who can do more than just disrupt the opposition so that we can maintain a lead (shame it didn’t happen in so many games last year when we lost after leading at half time).

We need a striker that is more than another failed Charlesworth gimmick.

We don’t need a striker who needs to be molly coddled because he may be benched. He managed to deal with it while he was on the bench at Smurf FC, why shouldn’t he manage it with us?

We need a striker who can score against NPL teams when the ball is delivered to them, and I’ve seen Simon fail in preseason matches against that sort of competition,(anyone watch the Maitland stream?).

We don’t need a player with a track record of going into a spastic rage when a decision goes against him.

We need a plan that does not involve a striker whose role is to hold up play so that midfielders can then score (someone suggested this as a tactic elsewhere, just hope it isnt being taken seriously). Also, we need plan that does not rely on the slim hope that we win via a penalty, or through a set play.

If our plan is for Simon to be our “go to” striker, I think we are screwed, yet again.

In contrast Murray has a proven track record against NLP opposition, yet Simon fails to be competitive at even at that level. Maybe we should change our tactics to support a striker like Murrays’s strengths rather than Simon’s inadequacies.

Even if the starting striker is still in doubt, I think we should be using the rest of the pre season to have the rest of our starting line up gel so that we are tested as a unit before the start of the comp.

I think we are making too many excuses for Matt and by doing this lowering our expectations.

Ultimately it comes down to whether we think anyone in our starting squad would get a crack at a starting or sub spot in another A league team. Most of our strongest 11 either have had match/bench time elsewhere or have shown they’d be able to fight for that chance.
Jury might be out on Clisby but Brown was starting for Victory last season and with some fitness and confidence I think he will be ok.
WSW were playing GG and wanted to retain him.
I believe Rowles would probably be a sub at most others but am happy for him to take his chance here especially this season with a more experienced head beside him. Tongyik could be much the same, like Clisby confidence might be key.
Silvera showing enough to fight for bench minutes at minimum.
Keeper, Oar, DDS and the starting visa players no need to explain.
That leaves us with the forwards. I think Murray is at least on par with other bench attackers in the league. Majok was getting bench minutes, not the most confidence inspiring with WSW but I’m happy for Staj to see what he can do with a development prospect. Finally we have Simon our incumbent starter and I can’t see anyone signing him if we released him tomorrow. Who would they cut to even make the bench? Not the likes of Kamsoba, Toure or any number of exciting young players, I just don’t see it happening.
If the other clubs wouldn’t then why would we? Operating like that starts us on the back foot.

Does anyone know if this special coasties kit will be available for purchase?
I love it!
They should make it the away kit for the entire season.
I’m not a big jersey collector but the 2 coasties jerseys I have from years ago are amongst my most prized possessions. One is the navy and red striped one that would fit a 12 year old that my mate gave me when as a young lad and the other is the white one I managed to sneakily grab when I trialled as a 15year old that was way too big back then but perfect fit now.
The nostalgia is huge.
Should’ve been our colours from the beginning imo

Interesting that we've named GG and Tongyik in the squad. I'm pretty sure Rowles is still suspended too.

Just posted the same thing in the squad thread haha
Maybe there just needs to be certain number of names on the squad sheet.
Lewis Miller is there so hopefully he gets a chance at CB.
Going to be a stern early test, I’m excited to see if we go up a level.

MARINERS RELEASE THROWBACK STRIP AHEAD OF VITAL FFA CUP CLASH!
- A BLAST FROM THE PAST TO CELEBRATE GOSFORD'S FOOTBALLING HISTORY!
coastie strip.jpeg

By Josh Gribling 27 Aug 2019
A-LEAGUE /CENTRAL COAST MARINERS /FFA CUP /UMBRO

The Mariners are going old-school for their FFA Cup Round of 16 clash against the Brisbane Roar, unveiling a special retro-style kit which pays homage to Gosford’s rich footballing history.

Central Coast’s FFA Cup-exclusive kit takes inspiration from the club’s predecessors, the Central Coast Coasties, with the new strip borrowing elements from the Coasties’ kits of ’98 and ’99.
The smart-looking jersey is predominantly white but features navy blue on the shoulders and for its classy button-up collar, with a vertical red stripe running along the right side of the shirt which is broken at the chest by the obligatory FFA Cup logo.

Current club captain Matt Simon remembers his time as a Coastie long ago, telling the Mariners’ website:

“It’s a very proud moment for me.”

“It’s paying tribute to my first representative jersey on the Central Coast that I wore in the under 11’s, so it's bringing back some memories and it’s great that the club is paying tribute to the Coasties.”

“I’ve always said it’s a privilege to be captain of the club. Being a local boy, for me to be able to represent the region and lead the boys out week-in-week out, I feel privileged for that and I enjoy every minute of it.”
After finally escaping the historically problematic Round of 32, where they’ve been knocked out for the past four years straight, the Mariners will be hoping they can match their performance from the inaugural Cup of 2014-15, where they made it all the way to the semi-finals.

Central Coast are set to face Brisbane Roar in the FFA Cup Round of 16 at Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday, August 28.

Birighitti and Munford listed as keepers (G/K) for FFA Cup clash with Roar. Pearce “naked” in that respect? A hidden message??

I don’t think so. Munfy is in camp with the NZ U23s, so I’d assume we’ll see Pearce take his spot on the pine.
