Doig is out for this game and maybe the next.

Aleady means he will have missed more games than he has played  ???
Does mean though that we will again be more likely to have an attacking line-up with Porter at RB. Wouldn't have fancied Boogard trying to match Brosque for pace. :innocent:

was just thinking the same thing myself but 50/50 as to what is better against brosque - porter's pace or boog's defensive ability

aganist brosque they even out for me so would have preferred doig in

How does something go from a cramp to missing two games... just hope Doig is over his injury problems as it was the only thing on his CV that said he may be a risk...

Becuase of his eagerness to play and impress at a new club and fans he came back to training too early twice.

Won't be making the same mistake this time.

Surely that sort of thing just shows you up as a bit of a goose??  What use is he to anyone (let alone the fans) on the sideline??

Not at all, shows commitment and a desire to play more than anything.

I guess you would have to be in his shoes to adequately judge the situation. As a weekend hacker I have came back early plenty of times and got reinjured. There is always so much temptation to play (just ask Bear), but add to the fact you are at a new club in which you have been hailed as the defensive saviour and the new leader, and that the gaffer is relying on you as the experienced defender, then you can understand how these situations happen.

I understand where you're coming from (funny as it sounds, I used to play back in the day), but really, wouldn't he be experienced enough to know that "coming back early from injury = massive potential to reinjured = MORE time not playing, thus more frustration"??

too true if it was that simple, but if the calf feels fine what are you to do?

Fair point, but if he was being fair and realistic to himself (seriously, the first thing I ever heard about him was "injury prone"), then you think he'd be cautious about a comeback straight away??

(I'm not hating on the guy, not one bit - I thought he and his control of the defence was _sensational_ against Melbourne - I'm just annoyed that we've lost that for at least another game.  A game in particular where he would be even-more-so-than-usual useful)

crowed 6000. i think the kick of time will really kill this one.
Please don't take this as an attack on you but what do they do in other parts of the world? EPL often kick off at 3pm and I'm sure they have plenty of local hacks involved in comps all over the place. Is it the fact that they have such a big population it makes no differance? I'm curious what do you guy's think?

The (vast majority) of English population live for football. Hence their large crowd fiigures.

Sat 3pm is proper football time.

All professional games should ko off then and we should have a proper A,B,C half-time scoreboard (anyone under 40 know what they are ?)

Wed's at 7.30pm is ok occasionally.

Personally I think our starting line up will probably be exactly the same...
I'd really like to see more of Travis, but admittedly I don't watch him train every day.  Shape wise I'd like to see a change, our 4 3 3 - was a depressing 4 5 1 for the entire second half once Ljubo pushed up and Thomson started bombing forward.  On saturday with Danning, Brosque and Corica, SFC will push at least as well as the jest did in the second half, and probably better. Vitislav will have no doubt noted what it takes to put us on the back foot and how it will provide a relatively safe and dominant possession game for them if they get us onto the back foot. Which with a lone striker is likely imo.

Personally I'm more than happy with a gritty defensive performance away to the tards, but 4 5 1's at home are much harder on the soul to bare. Also I suspect it's going to have a heavy toll on Matty and it may see him go the way of injury. Hard to put in the work rate he does and deal with level of physicality being dished out to him week in week out... Extremely happy for him to prove me wrong however.

Sydney also have looked better in attack than defence for mine, so you have to try to capitalise on this weakness... Adelaide's lone striker routine was a clear example taht this is not the best way to get a result out of sydney. Though to their defense they were at least away (though buggered if I think that would have changed things ;))

For mine I'd prefer a genuine 442 than a pretend 433... come 451...

                          Danny

Porter        Boogs              Wilko      Heff

                    Hutch          Pedj

    McGlinchey                                Kwas

                      Macca
                                  Matty

Play Dylan in just behind Matty or vice versa, to help close down the mids a little. Let McGlinchey play wide and or tuck in when Porter gets forward as he is good at doing. Excited by the potential of Wee man and Porter combining just has that right feel of chemistry about it... Maybe Sub Dylan at 60 (at this point when he started looking tired last week) and give Travis a run upfront. Kwassie should be watched for an earlier sub too, looked to run out of gas....

Bench

Travis, Redders, Ahmad, Lewis...
Prefer to have Caceres on bench than Nik at the moment... and maybe bring him on fo Kwassie at 70.
Nik just doesn't look like he knows how to get himself into the game at the moment... Real pity...

Crowd 9k

take a k approx away from our last crowd due to 3pm kickoff. Hope I'm wrong as many seem to think this time will be very successful crowd wise.

Re Doig calf strain, agree with desire and commitment comments. In my own case I know I've come back from some calf strains in a week and been fine, and then at other times with what may have even felt like a lesser strain, found that it just keeps re occurring until I give it longer rest. Just so hard to tell and its no exact science. And as Mick said, very hard not to put your hand up when your team needs you, even when you can still feel the niggle, let alone when you can't feel it anymore and you can do all the strength tests without any issue... though you know it hasn't been long...

Doig In Another Race To Be Fit

CENTRAL Coast Mariners defender Chris Doig once again faces a race against time to make his second appearance in the A-League.

The central defender was a late withdrawal from the Mariners 1-1 draw with Newcastle Jets last week after picking up a calf injury in Central Coast's Round 1 victory against Melbourne.

Doig is again facing a fitness test ahead of the club's crucial Round 3 showdown against Sydney at Bluetongue Stadium in Gosford on Saturday.

While desperate for one of his star recruits to play, Mariners coach Lawrie McKinna will not take any risks with Doig.

"I want him to play and he wants to play but I don't want a pretty minor injury to turn into something a lot more serious," McKinna said."Chris is very professional and has done everything he can in rehab to be right.

"We're hoping he trains on Thursday and if he gets through that OK he'll be in the squad. If there's any doubts we'll leave it another week."

Nigel Boogaard played alongside captain Alex Wilkinson in central defence against the Jets last week and did a sound job.

Boogaard scored Central Coast's goal in the second half and will again play in the middle if Doig does not start.

Apart from Doig the Mariners have a full squad to pick from with all players getting through the Newcastle match without injury.

McKinna is confident his team has the form on the board to end Sydney's unbeaten start to the season in front of what is expected to be a big crowd for a rare Saturday afternoon match in Gosford.
