Dwight may not be the man for the job, but I feel we could do with a creative mid playmaker...

As others have said, a solid defender, Then the toss up between another keeper or a striker??

But a good creative mid could set our strikers up well...

(ie Brosque, who is/was nothing without his little Bazillian mate to set him up!)

Another keeper is a waste of time and money in reality, Vukovic has stuff all of a suspension. The only reason we'd want one is as an additionaly for when Danny leaves.

I think the focus should be a good proven striker at the moment.

This sums up Kareem in a nutshell.......

It took 6 weeks for him to fully recover from that.

...or was that footage of his muck around game with the rakes from Avoca grade.

Mrdja banks on slow but sure strategy

Friday 9 May, 2008 12:01am

AFTER playing in just nine A-League games in three years injury-plagued striker Nik Mrdja is embarking on yet another comeback.

And he needs to prove his fitness over the next month to earn a new contract with the Central Coast Mariners.

Throughout his three years with the Mariners, Mrdja has battled a knee injury which stemmed from bruising on the kneecap. He missed the entire opening season of the A-League, played in six games in season two and played the first three games last season.

He did enough in those three games last year to win a Socceroos cap against Argentina but has not played since.

Mrdja had an arthroscopy in May 2006 to clean up the cartilage and had a similar operation but with a different surgeon in November. This time Mrdja rested for four months before trying to do any training. He is halfway through a rehabilitation program that is slowly bringing him up to speed with the rest of the squad.

Mrdja said the more cautious approach appeared to be paying dividends and he was confident of overcoming the injury.

"Before I used to hobble around a little bit but now I am running freely and smoothly and I'm looking forward to getting out there and having a kick," Mrdja said.

It will be another six weeks before Mrdja joins in full team training and he is not likely to play a part in the Pre-Season Cup tournament in July. It's all part of the cautious approach to ensure the injury comes good this time.

"If anything, I'm trying to hold myself back and not do as much," Mrdja said.

"By the time the season starts we'll definitely know whether my knee is going to be right or not. My surgeon has given me a lot of confidence, he's got several rugby players through this problem."

Thanks for that Midfielder.I wonder if anyone else has or will show much interest in him?

His stuff all suspension is a third of the season. Assuming he doesnt attract interest at the olympics and head overseas before even playing with us this season.

well i would be just happy with a speedy striker/
Please get a speedy striker!!! We need one
Doesnt have to be frakin awesome just somone off bench who could shred up the game in the end.
Look who has one
Sydney (Brosque), Perth (Rukyvitska)(dunno how to spell that), Newcastle (Griffiths), MV (Allsopp + AT), Adelaide (Burns), QLD- not out and out strikers but they play with 3 forwards (Zullo and Kruse).
I think that a speedy striker would cover all bases in attack and give us an extra dimension!
Also defensive utility (who can play left back), failing at that maybe a left sided utility in the mould of a younger D.Brown?

Dylan MacAllister. Problem solved.

Know we just need one who'll score 10 goals a season.

We have one of those if we can get him fit (between the ears probably)

12 games from Mrdja would give us probably 6 or 7 goals. Add that to Sasho and a few from the others = League Champions again.

It's been a trial to be sure with Nik... but I'm simply uninterested in the past or further Mrdja bashing  ::) If the knee comes good which is looking promising, then I think he'll be playing with more passion than just about anyone in HAL and my punt would be for double of 6 or 7 goals...

Sasho won't be slower (No jokes now about how could he be :p ) Point is, he's not hired for his pace... Not a single of his goals last year had anything to do with pace... good poachers instincts and on the ball skill. He was a key player in seeing us win the premiership and I'd be surprised if he doesn't make another decent contribution this season... so for me he's won my gratitude and belief until he proves otherwise...

I think our attack is looking the strongest heading into a season that we have ever seen.
Though yes a marquee striker will just about always tickle my fancy ;D
(That said I'm really looking forward to seeing what McAllister has to offer and have a very good feeling, as from what I can tell our new signings are really going to both gel and enhance our/Lawrie's style of play.
Our midfield looks simply ballistic.
Defensive line is strong to terrific... Boogs is moving from strength to strength and can't wait to see Heff run out again... but as many have commented it still lacks depth...
Sign a utility defender or even another marquee defender for my mind.
keeper...mmmmm...If we're going to bring in another keeper, no point unless he's should be good enough to challenge for the #1 spot...And I quite simply want Danny back... so it would have to be a short term loan or I'm not interested and am willing to cast my dice with Trott for the first 3rd of the season - which I think is what they will do.
