ready and waiting, and very much hoping he does. if he gets himself fit and firing, he'll be unstoppable, but it's up to him.

C'mon Nik, you lazy skiving git................prove my doubts wrong..

(Thing is, I reckon he is easily the best striker in the HAL when fit but hopefully this will wind him up even more)

We all have our doubts he has the heart muscle to do this but If he pulls through then yes we have the best striker in HAL. He was on fire at the beginning of last year - that game against the NIX he could have had 5 against his name. It was probably the best half we played all year.
I can not think there would be too many supporters who, if Nick was fit, wouldn't want him back.

Tobin says we have more signing to come see article in 442 below

Mariners Can Take It To Next Level
Jon Ritson
May 2 2008 13:32

SOCCEROO legend  :eek:verhead:Alex Tobin believes two Grand Final losses will spur the Central Coast Mariners' new recruits to take the Premiers to that next level'.

The Gosford sides development manager thinks there may yet be another two or three signings to come at the club with a marquee player neither being ruled in or out.

Tobin told au.fourfourtwo.com: First things first, you have to put in the hard work to make the finals. Hopefully once there theyll remember last year and get over the line.

A lot of the players have seen that twice now (losing in the grand final) and youd hope that would create a real desire not to experience it again.

Having said that, you have to be positive and to also see it as being part of a football club that has reached the final in two out of three seasons.

Weve recruited well and the players weve got on board can maybe take us to that next level, lets hope so.

Ahmad Elrich, Dylan Macallister and Adrian Caceres are already on board for season four but how many more can Mariners fans expect to see.

Tobin said: I would imagine it wouldnt be more than two or three likely to come in. Theres players being talked to and theres players in the pipeline. Some things work out, some things dont. Its hard to say.

In the past weve gone down the path of not really going flat out insisting we have a marquee player but if one is made available to us and we think it fits in well with the running of the team then wed certainly look at it.

If a great striker was available to us we probably wouldnt refuse it but I think weve a reasonable balance in there (the side
).

Theres an appreciation that we played well and had a good season last year on a lot of levels :eek:verhead:. I think a lot of the players will have in the minds, and all the coaches too, that on top of the season coming weve got Asia to follow. So theres a big emphasis on being in good form when that happens as well.

McKinna has confidence in his Mariners
Monday, 5 May 2008

Nigel Boogaard Central Coast Mariners coach Lawrie McKinna is confident his side will be able to go one better and be crowned 2008/09 Hyundai A-League Champions.

After finishing the 2007/08 regular season as A-League Premiers, the Mariners were downed 1-0 by the Newcastle Jets in a tight and thrilling grand final in front of 36,355 fans.

Despite the loss of John Aloisi (end of contract), Tom Pondeljak (Melbourne Victory), Alvin Ceccoli (released) and the retirement of Tony Vidmar, McKinna believes his team can maintain its strong form and challenge for the title this season.

"We are confident we will get better, improve things on and off the park and I think every year we have done that so far," McKinna said.

"The reason we were successful was that the squad had a lot more depth last year and if we can improve that depth again this year I think we can go that one step further."

McKinna has wasted no time in making some key signings for the new season, with Adrian Caceres (Victory), Ahmad Elrich (Phoenix) and Dylan Macallister (Lyn) already brought into the squad.

And McKinna said this trio are only going to give his team a more attacking shape as it strives to win its first ever Hyundai A-League crown.

"The three signings we have got are all attacking options. They are all guys in their mid 20s, they are all fit exciting players in their own way," McKinna said.

"Dylan is six-foot-three and his test results from the first week show he is very fit, Ahmed has got an abundance of pace and will have done a pre-season for the first time in two years and Adrian is an exciting player who can play anywhere up front."

"We have got three good attacking options and hopefully in the next three or four weeks we will have a couple more signings."

two problems - he's just done his ACL for one, and for two he's far more likely to get bites from EPL teams. he's very highly rated in england (but then again, so's lucas neill it seems...).

Very exciting. Love for Tommy aside... I already prefer this squad to last seasons lineup.

I agree sensei. This is easily our best squad so far.

Especially if Nik comes good. I would like to see one more defender and possibly another striker depending on Nik.

Our midfield looks the best in the league on paper, which is why I'm not so concerned with Gumps going. If we replaced him with equal or less ability I'd be pissed. But the MF's we've signed are better players than him and offer much more going forward.

I should also add that I'd be suprised if we don't bring in a keeper short term as well.

I'd be happy with giving Trotty a run until Danny's back, but I have a feeling that a keeper will come in.

Good news on Nik and Oz

Mrdja and Osman return to the foldTuesday, 6 May 2008

Nik Mrdja
Action Sports Images / John Dewberry Central Coast Mariners Two of the Central Coast Mariners long-term sufferers, Nik Mrdja and Matthew Osman, have returned to training with their Mariners team-mates to begin preparations for the Hyundai A-League 2008/09 season, a sight that is sure to please fans of the yellow and navy.

Both Mrdja and Osman missed the lions share of the Mariners third Hyundai A-League campaign as a consequence of differing knee injuries.

Mrdjas ailment, a recurring grievance that has come about from problems with the cartilage in his right knee, was corrected by surgery late last year and has restricted the Qantas Socceroo to watching from the grandstands for nearly seven months.

Osmans injury was perhaps more straightforward the 24-year-old tearing his anterior cruciate ligament during a routine training drill at Bluetongue Stadium on the eve of the Mariners Round 8 Hyundai A-League match up with the Queensland Roar.

Osman also required surgery, a full knee reconstruction and a mammoth six months later on, is on the verge of completing a full training session and re-staking his claim for a Mariners starting berth.

"The procedure was a complete ACL repair, a knee reconstruction, I had a bit of cartilage damage in my meniscus and I also had a fracture in there, so I was on crutches for seven weeks, Ive undergone a lot of rehab from when the surgery was done in November until Christmas time and its been a long haul from there," said Osman.

"Now, Im probably at about 75% and working pretty well, change of direction is coming along and hopefully Ill be involved in full training in three to four weeks.

"The advice from the medical team is for me to be training in three to four weeks and then competing in some sort of game situation in six to eight weeks, so potentially by the end of June I could be featuring in some of the games that we play hopefully that is the case and all goes well."

Mrdjas recovery has been much anticipated by Mariners and Qantas Socceroo fans alike since the 29-year-old exploded onto the Hyundai A-League scene in May 2005.

It was during this period where the Mariners qualified for back to back pre-season finals, firstly the Club World Championship qualifying series showpiece followed by the inaugural Pre-Season Cup final, that Mrdja underlined his value to the yellow and navy cause.

Six goals in eight matches all at Bluetongue Stadium, were genuine cause for excitement ahead of the inaugural Hyundai A-League season, however, Mrdja first felt the effects of his current injury on the eve of the campaign and was subsequently ruled out for the entire season.

Season two saw Mrdja return to training in pre-season before belatedly making his Hyundai A-League debut against the Queensland Roar at Suncorp Stadium in Round 10.

Six appearances, three from the opening whistle, delivered Mrdja his first Hyundai A-League goal a blistering long range free kick against the New Zealand Knights at North Harbour Stadium.

Mrdjas influence was evident in abundance on the pitch, with the Mariners registering three wins and three draws over the course of the six matches he took part in, but this time, Mrdja fell foul to a heel injury that forced him to the sidelines for the last five weeks of the season.

With a full pre-season under his belt ahead of the Hyundai A-League 2007/08 campaign, Mrdja duly delivered with six goals in pre-season trials, another in the Pre-Season Cup and two in the opening three rounds of the Hyundai A-League.

It was then with immense frustration for the player, the Mariners club, their Members and supporters that Mrdja suffered a recurrence of the injury that had so dogged his progress over the past two years within days of making his Qantas Socceroos debut against Argentina in Melbourne.

Again, Mrdja was again ruled out for the entire season.

Now, as the Mariners ready themselves for their season four assault, Mrdja is well advanced down the road to recovery, with an aim to playing some part in the Mariners Pre-Season Cup campaign, which begins in mid-July.

"Im feeling great, Ive had a long time off, Im going through the whole process again and definitely looking to get out there and have a kick with the boys," said Mrdja.

"Basically, Ive had four months off after surgery, and I have a three-month rehab program which Im about halfway through and hopefully within about five weeks or so I can join in with the boys and start enjoying it, instead of watching them train.

"This time has been an entirely different approach, last time I had surgery it was a six week break before I started running, this time it has been four months.

"It definitely feels good, it feels right, Im just keeping my fingers crossed and hopefully it all comes good."

Mrdja and Osman will not take part in the Mariners upcoming trial matches against the Central Coast Lightning at Pluim Park on Tuesday, 20 May and against Spirit FC at Christie Park on Wednesday, 28 May, but are a chance at returning in time for the Mariners 2008 Pre-Season Cup campaign.

The Mariners opening Pre-Season Cup match is against Wellington Phoenix at Westpac Stadium on Sunday, 20 July. Kick off is at 2pm AEST
