Central Coast Mariners Squad for 2008/09 Season

What I suggested was basically a diamond with Hutch not being an outright attacking mid and Caceres and Elrich being Attacking wingers. If Lawrie signs Elrich its gonna be obvious that wing play will be our major attacking tactic, with minimal emphasis on attacks down the centre. Hutch and Jedi would to differing degrees be holding/defensive

Not pleased or Angry with Elrich signing TBH. Just hope he's not marquee.

he won't be marquee and with a full preseason he will make an excellent contribution next season

he almost topped the league in completed crosses this season so imagine what a leaner and fitter ahmad could do

would also make the derby very very interesting

Glad to hear he's not marquee.

Always he would be good next year with a full pre-season, no matter who he went to.

IF we have Ahmad, as well as Caceres, there is two players who can potentially get to the byline and cross the ball for strikers. Last season we had no one who would do this.

Depending on Nik (as with every comment in this thread!) we may need to sign a striker who can score headers.

Jardel?

I thought Elrich dogged it playing on the wing for the sheepdips. How many times did he use his "supposed" blisteing speed to go round a defender? He got the ball and knocked over a cross without taking on the defender. Half of them aimless and didnt worry the opposition defence too much. If he had used his "supposed" speed he could have got to the goal line and cut it back from there. The sheepdips had a tried and true striker in Smelz but he didnt get much of a sniff of a chance from Elrich's crosses.

It was said in another post that he almost topped the league in completed crosses this season. What constitutes a completed cross. Is it the same as a completed pass in as much as his own team mate received the ball from the cross. Is there a percentage figure of completed crosses to incompleted crosses.

yes, a completed cross is the same as a completed cross - hitting the target

there are no stats for uncompleted crosses

disagree about smeltz and the nz strikers - they got plenty of service from players like daniel, felipe, brown and elrich this season

Could this possibly lead to Tarek joining us?

I know it was mentioned in the Telegraph the other week we were linked with him and he hasn't yet signed for the Jets(only agreed to terms).

I wouldn't be surprised if Tarek ditched the Jets if we put in an offer tbh.

havent we already put in an offer though?
i dont know what would change now this time around.

im still trying to work out why people on here want to employ someone to sit on the bench all season as a back up for heff in case talay breaks his leg again. feel free to give an explanation and make me look like an idiot... but i think thats just a major waste of a signing.

The fact we've got Ahmed now would be a pretty big incentive for him IMO.

I don't think anyone wants a player that ONLY plays at LB, more of a player who could play in CD or in Midfield that is capable of backing up if Heff gets injured. Can't see anyone in our squad doing that ATM.

Is Tarek not a right back? It does make sense to have him as cover for Osman, even tho in my opinion Osman was the best right back in the league in his brief spell and if continues that form Tarek wont even get a sniff of the ball..

Always a worry when you have someone coming off a knee reconstruction tho....

yeh but we would have had ahmed in the first place if they agreed to the original offer. lol.
i think i kind of see your point though.

what you said is very suitable, but i recall people specifically saying that we need a back up LB. if they meant what you meant, some clarity could have been achieved by saying something like 'utility player as back up for a defensive role or defensive mid' or something like that.

i have no problem signing tarek. as everyone is predicting, clarky may not resign, and more than likely cant play an entire season, despite his fitness... and knee injuries always lead to more injuries (osman), so a right back would b beneficial... but people were talking about gettnig a back up LB

I was the one that said it. However, I clarified it later by saying that it shouldn't be someone that can only play at LB.

sweet. it wasnt just u.
and there is nothing wrong with having that opinion.
i was just simply stating my opinion - that i think its not a good idea. but having a player that CAN play LB as well as other positions would be suitable.

Ive suggested numerous times that we should try and look for a fullback that can play on both sides of the field and maybe in another position

that would be matt osman

he is the most technically correct player in the squad and can use both feet very well

Yeah and when fit he's a possible backup for Mile. I've seen Osman play RB, CB, CDM, RW!

BTW, is McAndrew a defender or a midfielder? His player profile has him listed at CM with the Mariners, but I'm sure I've seen him a RB. He's got a similar build to Clarkey, so I was wondering if McAndrew is as fast? If so, he may be a good understudy for Clarkey. If he's good enough, this year he should be getting some gametime.
