ALM Sydos v Mariners

- Barcellos & Theo running the ball into traffic.
Not suited style against Sydney.

- Torres not making those bursting inside runs now for about 8 games, or working narrower of Nizzy left shoulder for the lay off.

- Nizzy should have started deeper and maybe do a more skilful 4-5-1 with Dipizio starting.

- We kept trying to play to feet but a Sydney player up the arse of the recieving player 9 out of 10 times, meaning we lost possession 9/10 times basically being dispossessed from pressure.

- Not having Farrell hurt us a lot as well, his mungrel and big moments can fire us up.

- However Sydney could have easily had a few more goals, Kaltak and Hall saved us with last ditch defending many times. Basically both turned into sweepers cutting out wide balls.

- I feel we maybe didn’t analyse the Wellington tactics vs Sydney enough or we decided that we were going to stick to playing our own game and try and go for it as usual.

- Kuol, Reec and Nizzy did try and bring the team forward with our own press but the next 2 lines were hesitant to commit to rushing them at that sprinting pace, and then they played around our forwards and our mids and wide defenders were NOT right on the Sydney players arses, meaning they had time for a touch to control the ball which they were not giving us!

* Can’t win them all but disappointed Jacko didn’t see this coming.
If we were going to keep Nizzy high as soon as they had the ball with their fullbacks our whole team needed to press at the same pace and move as one unit from the first whistle.

If we weren’t going to go as hard as them we should have gone with more long balls in first half to take away their confidence and not show our hand until second half.

Or altered structure for a flat 5 midfield to block them out from the middle.

He was kicking blokes not assisting in defence. He would have been sent if he wasn't hooked. He's a liability.

I disagree, yes he copped the yellow, but he was defending his position, what positive thing did Barcellos contribute when he came on to replace him?

Such a slow match. Not many shots at all. Sydney were all over us. We have so much potential in attack, yet did nothing. Still scratching my head.

Paull is our 4th string left back, in all honesty why would you have a 4th string defending probably the most dangerous forward in the league, solo, how do you think it would end up?
Go back and watch when he was coming on. Jacko turned around, (away from the pitch), hands in his pockets and literally looked like he was going to hurl.
Maybe it was never in his plans that Paull be needed, or he really didn’t see til the game started rolling, that if was going to be an epic fail. Either way, he knew when he sent him on, what was coming.

As others have said, perhaps this was a game to play 4-5-1 and make sure we were matching SFC in the midfield.

Theo looked like he was a little sore at the break, so maybe that’s why he was replaced but in a game like this, we can’t afford to have our wide mids not tracking back and helping the full backs. Torres has been off his game for weeks now (when did he last score a goal for example) but it seems to be a head issue, as his defensive work rate was exceptional early in the season. We couldn’t afford to have a couple of flair players out wide, if they weren’t prepared to do the defensive yards and SFC took full advantage tonight.

Whilst I’m not going to go as far as saying Paull cost us the game, the dynamic definitely moved further in Sydney’s favour after Storm went off. We definitely missed Faz tonight and Smiffy being out too shows we have some weaknesses that need to be looked at. I would rather Steele had been played at LB, as he is more mobile than Paull and has a bit more mongrel about him.

We need to analyse that game and learn the lessons quickly, before other coaches adopt the same tactics against us.

Agree, lost in the mids tonight and whilst young players like Tapp are good prospects these games show there is still some way to go. Looked like we didn’t learn from the other game against them. They pressed and did everything they could to disrupt any counter. Hard when the Ref lets them get away with it which they didn’t get in NZ last game. Can’t help but think Evans was strategically put on that game as worked wonders for them. Not sure how you counter the influence the Ref can have on disruptive play. Move on to City and hope the short turn around does us a favour.

Jacko’s tactics were good and you could see us get out alot more in the first half than last game but then we kept turning it over. The players were sloppy and SFC grew in confidence the more we turned it over.

Still Kaltak Hall and Doka were phenomenal but everyone else was on the back foot all night. Not coming for the ball and not up for the fight
Max tried hard but he went backwards to often.

I would have preferred Doka and Storm to have have been on opposite sides. Alou should have started over Edmondson.

Thought the ref was good first half at not letting SFC get away with the shit fouls without a card but then swallowed the whistle in the second and we lost the physical battle and panicked.

Paull is to slow and was having air swings at Lolley. He doesn’t have the grunt or agro of most CB’s.

Tapp was sloppy with the ball but defended with a lot of grit and played hard.

Not to worried as always knew we would need a game or two to get going again. No one else has the ability of SFC

We were ugly tonight but we simply got outworked and outfought. Dan and Brian were our MOM....please God show Paull a copy of the video so he understands....desperation, picking up and most importantly body between the striker and the goal....thats how you stop them scoring Tiger!

Alou made a decent impression but was the only sub that did.

3pts Hall
2pts Kaltak
1pt Storm and Vuka

Vuka was good but did poorly on the 2nd goal. Alou, Storm and Max got a soft pass and everyone else was a FAIL.
