All time Mariners greats

Reading Brett's most excellent article over at ESPN Soccernet (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/columns/story?id=740198&sec=australia&root=australia&cc=5739) got me thinking about those couple of people that in 50 years time - or whenever we start a Hall of Fame - that could/should be considered all time Mariners greats??

Lawrie McKinna - yeah, his last two years were a bit "eh", but Brett's article says it all.  This man _IS_ the club.

Ian Ferguson - hard nut assistant, we arguably lost a bit of off field grunt when he left, and his 4 minute cameo in Season 1 when he nearly scored were a highlight for anyone who was there.  ;)

Tom Pondeljak - in my opinion, the best player we've ever had.  Loved by the fans, scorer of some insanely good goals (the run from halfway against Sydney where he made their defence look stupid, that winner against Melbourne at home, _THE_ backheel against Perth), and a ridiculously good No. 10 who had that something extra - the incisive pass, the timed run - that would win us many a game.  Left on good terms, and as far as I've experienced, is still applauded any time we're in Melbourne or they're in Gosford.

Top post Brett, well done.

I'd agree that Tommy and Mile are the 2 best players to wear the yellow and blue so far.

Gumps deserves a mention for his heart. You could never accuse him of not doing his absolute best. Almost acored in the Grand Final against Sydney, only a minute after Corica.

Meggsy
Tommy
Jedi
Heff (in Hal 1 and this year as well, he played very well and came back from that Breeze match
at Bluetounge when Kossie Killers smashed his leg)
Lawrie see Bretts Brilliant article

For sheer guts and gave it all, not necessarily  the best players but bleed yellow...

Clarky
Grummpy

If I was to cap my list at 5 for now (we've had good players, but these are Future Hall of Famers we're talking here ;) ), I'd add Michael Beauchamp and Mile Jedinak - ironically I feel, only _truly_ appreciated after their departures.  Most excellent when they were here though.

We should get on to the club about this, even if it's just a fan thing - "Fans Favourites" or some such, ask the community at large and such....

I know I will be shot down in flames here - but bugger it I don't care. I wouldn't have Tommy in my top 3. Don't get me wrong. I think Tommy was a great player. Unfortunately, because of injury his influence at CCM was less than it may have been otherwise.

I will always remember his gut-busting run to stop a long range shot against SFC when Danny was caught up the other end of the field (was this the difference we needed for the premiership?) , some great backheels and shots.

My top five would be

Mile
Meggsy
Viddie
Tommy
Danny

Mile seemed to just appear as the finished product. Meggsy and Viddie were both underrated when they were here. We only saw their worth after they left. Tommy as I said showed great patches but was a much better player than we saw here. Danny - on occasions the best keeper in Australia.

Gumps isnt fit to wipe the arses of the 3 true greats on that list

Bullshit.

A more effective player than Tommy.

The most popular player we have ever had and if we had got him in his mid 20's would have been the best by a mile.

For mine:

1. Meggsy
2. Jedinak
3. Gumpy
4. Mori
5. Vidmar
6. Pondeljak

Interesting to see whether people consider a 'great' of the club a fantastic player or a player that'd give their all for the club. I'd agree with Tommy, Gumps, Meggsie, Jedinak, Vukovic and add Crawley
