Perth Glorys playing squad for the Hyundai A-League 2010/11 season is almost complete with 5 players committing to the club.

West Australians Jamie Coyne, Todd Howarth and Tommy Amphlett have all signed new deals while Michael Baird and Josh Mitchell will be fresh additions.

Baird, a former Young Socceroo, is a centre forward who has played in Romanias top division with Universitatea Craiova for the past four seasons.

Mitchell, 25, is a versatile defender who also played with Universitatea Craiova since 2005.  Born in Newcastle, NSW, Mitchell has played more than 100 games in the Romanian Liga 1.

BRISBANE SECURES MATT SMITH

Brisbane Roar has secured the services of defender Matt Smith for the next two Hyundai A-League seasons.

Smith joins Brisbane after his former North Queensland Fury team mate Shane Stefanutto signed a three-year deal with the club earlier in the week.

Having joined the Fury from Queensland State League club Brisbane Strikers, the English-born Australian said he was happy to be coming home"

Very good pick-up for Roar. I was very impressed with his work in central defence at Fury. Not looking good for Fury though!

This will be interesting especially with a club like Perth and trying to keep Sterj and get Robbie.

Good idea to attract higher quality players but it will certainly favour the 'larger' clubs.  I'm sure clubs like Mariners, Adelaide, Fury and Nix won't be thrilled with this news but if the league is to move forward I guess changes need to be made.  The last thing we want to see though is a lot of money spend for overage injury prone rubbish, time will tell.

Your right about the Mariners not liking this. If they did (or were not able to) not spend their budget over the last few years due to financial prudence they will need a fat billionaire to allow us to play in the big league

Indeed.

I think the FFA is hoping it will lift crowds and push up sponsor dollars, as well as tv rights.

Maybe the FFA is going to offset it a tad financially

perth set to announce the signing of fowler-foxsports

Star striker Robbie Fowler set to sign deal with Perth Glory
From staff writers
April 27, 2010 Former Liverpool star Robbie Fowler is set to turn his back on Sydney FC and join up with former coach Ian Ferguson at Perth Glory.

Perth owner Tony Sage has called a press conference at 5pm (EST) this afternoon where it's expected Fowler will be unveiled as the club's new marquee player.

The club has made no secret of its pursuit of the 35-year-old, who was North Queensland Fury's marquee player last season. Sydney FC were also reportedly in the hunt but Fowler has reportedly decided to take up the opportunity on the west coast.

Fowler is set to again work alongside Ferguson, his old coach at the Fury, who is now assistant to David Mitchell at Glory.

Perth Glory signs Robbie Fowler
Tuesday, 27 April 2010
by Steve Nelkovski, perthglory.com.au

Perth Glory is thrilled to announce the club has signed super star striker Robbie Fowler for the Hyundai A-League 2010/11 season.

Fowler, a former England international is the fourth highest goal scorer in the history of the English Premier League and known to Liverpool fans across the globe as God.

This is vindication that everything we are doing at Perth Glory is on track, beamed Chairman Tony Sage.

Robbie had a number of clubs chasing his signature, both in the Hyundai A-League and from the Middle-East and were delighted hes decided to join Perth Glory.

Its exciting for football fans in Western Australia that a legend has decided to play for us Sage said.

Fowler joins the Glory after one season in the Hyundai A-League with North Queensland Fury where he scored 9 goals in 26 games.

The 35 year old is the biggest signing in the history of Perth Glory.

Getting players of this calibre is not easy but its the commitment I have made to this football club. Now we need our fans and supporters to return the faith by purchasing season memberships.

We also need strong support from the commercial and business world and it would be remiss of me not to thank those organisations and individuals who have already pledged their support, Sage said.

Fowler will become the Glorys foreign marquee player and the club has now finalised its 23 man squad for the Hyundai A-League 2010/11 season.

Fowler will join his new Perth Glory team mates for pre-season training in June.
