I think there’s things they should have done better and a hell of a lot outside their control. They’ve picked up the reigns after years of FA neglect and walked face first into a covid shitstorm that saw Foxtel terminate their existing deal and lowball an offer that would kill the league. That they’ve picked up a new broadcast partner, significant investment and shored up the financials in the short term should not be understated.it’s an observation that the APL has been very underwhelming for the league. I don’t think that fact is undeniable.
On the broadcaster maybe Stan was the better bet in hindsight but then people would be complaining about 20+ dollars per month for Stan + their sport add on. I can’t help but wonder if US paramount was demo’d and the APL were somewhat hoodwinked over what the service would look here like in season 1. But that’s really all the options they had - Optus wasn’t bidding on any substantial capacity and Foxtel/Kayo were not viable.
The APL was able to buy time, how they use that is yet to be seen but if we can get clubs back out into schools and the community, if we can get some continuity in our seasons then I think they can rebuild.
