Half half I think - he wrote it just after breaking up with the missus.  Clearly a grandstanding element of Queen 2.0 going on though.  ;)

Many groups have claimed this song, from gays, American Negroes, American white kids wanting to be different, kids simply wanting to grow their hair long, anti war folk and many other groups...

Over the years many have argued who is the song being sung by, his girlfriend, his sister, his mother, his aunt, another kid at school who feels sorry for him, a teacher, an adult who obverses what the boy is going tho.

By an amazing coincidence, I read this last post as i was listening to Ike & Tina Turner's "River deep mountain high" ... probably the most ignored Phil Spector song ever in the US, but adored in the UK ... I still rate Tina's vocal on this one of the best I ever heard.
