Just got back from a very enjoyable game.

We totally dominated apart from one tiny spell when they should have equalised.

We were pretty good although we probably didn't hit top gear tonight. Overall far to good for the Mexicans and they looked out of their depth. A fair reflection of the game would have been a 4.0 scoreline.

Ryan. 8. Very good in all aspects.
Pedj 8. Lol. He had a shocker in the first 20 mins as his touch and control was all over the shop but his runs and movement were creating havoc. He tackled himself more often than they did. But Pedj never gives up and he just kept steaming forward. His reward was too great goals and a possible MOM award.
Rose 8. Looked very assured tonight.
Dutchy 8. Stroll in the park for the big man and was firing lovely 40yd Beckham like passes all afternoon. Class act.
Sainsbury 8. He is better than Wilko.....and that's a big wrap.
Bernie 6.5. Couple of intelligent passes but below his best tonight.
Hutcho 7. Solid. Bit sad to see him not even think about a dig from the edge of the box when in a great position.
Monty 7.5. Solid. Some biting tackles.
WeeMac 7.5. Looked very good in the first half but invisible in the second.
Rogic 8.5. Looked quality tonight.
McBreen 7. One sizzling shot but not great tonight.

Yeah active support was fantastic. Auburn, Rowdy and the boys at the back were magic and really working in well with the yellow army

First half was a little frustrating for the guys. McAllister is such a big girl.
Great to see Pedj have his moment of glory in the second half. Especially when the strikers weren't having much joy.

Bernie's was stronger on the ball again. Made some good runs and seemed to be tracking across to the centre where he's in his element rather than up the line.

Some visiting teams come to win, while others come with the intention of holding on and taking away a point. MH seemed to come to lose - Aloisi has a big job in front of him.

I agree with Wombat that we were a 4 goals better team, and we never really hit top gear.

Did enough to get 3 points.

Tommy ran the game while he was on.

Genuine pleasure to see him play for us, unlikely to last sadly

Personally I thought Pedj had a shocking 1st half. Did he even put in a cross? He seemed to want to beat his man with some dance footwork... that he just wasn't capable of tonight.

Rogic... he's a Rolls Royce! Not only a pleasure to watch him play but it's also been a pleasure to see how he's developed over the last 12 months.

Oh! Be still my beaten Heart!
With apologies, but when you play the Heart it is pun time. Somebody said recently that there is very little difference between the Mariners playing well and playing poorly; what they meant is that the Mariners play to a consistently high standard and that was the case today. Not at their best but completely dominant, helped, it must be said by a negative display from the opponents.

The Mariners welcomed back new Socceroos Rogic and Ryan with the latter sporting a haircut that would not look out of place at Longbay Jail. The Heart had their three Socceroos back also.

The first half was almost 45 minutes of flatline on the Heart monitor with occasional peaks of skill from the Mariners. McGlinchey was full of skills and tricks, the full backs pressed forward and Hutch and Monty controlled the midfield. Rogic always threatened to do something special. Bojic brought a finger tip save from Bolton from a free-kick – a sign of what was to come. McBreen was impressing with neat link up play, especially one superb ball out to Rose. But the goal would not come: Rogic was denied as Colosimo nicked away Bojic’s cross after good work by McGlinchey; Rogic put clear by Rose shot tamely at Bolton as did Bernie minutes later after good work from McGlinchey and, again Rose. Melbourne’s only riposte came when a beautiful cross from Fred caused Bojic to panic – a Heart-in-the-mouth moment – and almost head into his own net. It was though, all that negative defensive Heart had to offer as the Mariners dominated the play.

Arnie was losing it on the touchline, he must have been wearing his Mr Grumpy socks, angrily berating the players when things didn’t come off; Aloisi, cool to the point of coma, remained impassive.
As half-time approached the Mariners twice almost battered their way through with Heart, especially the veteran Colosimo, desperately keeping them at bay. The Mariners threatening finish approaching the break would have worried the Heart as they are a strong second half team. Making his way down the tunnel at half-time John Aloisi awoke from his coma and went to talk to the referee, it may have been to ask why, in a game without malice, two of his players had incurred yellow cards but it is more likely that it was to make a Heartfelt plea to the referee to ask the Mariners to let his team have a ball to play with.

I lost my internet feed at the start of the second half for about twenty minutes; the good news was that when it returned the Mariners were 1-0 up, apparently from a Pedj Bojic free-kick.

Rogic’s slalom gravity-defying runs had threatened to unlock the Heart defence in the first half and in the 64th minute his run and sublime pass gave McBreen a great chance, right footed, but he placed his shot wide. Heart was under the pump and there was nothing it could do to relieve the pressure. The Mariners’ second came again from Bojic, a deflected shot leaving Heart broken – no more than the Mariners deserved. McBreen should have had the third as he ran clean through onto a superb ball from Sainsbury – he is very good at these balls forward – and slipped the ball through Bolton’s legs but it didn’t have the weight, and using lawn bowls parlance, it ‘died’ and Gerhardt was able to clear.

With use of the defibrillator on the side line Heart briefly jerked into life; the optimistically named GolGol Mehbratu half-Heartedly put a great chance wide and Hoffman then had a shot but his Heart wasn’t in it. Duke and Pellegrino came on for late cameos and the Mariners comfortably ran out winners. Down Hearted Melbourne players trudged off the field as the Mariners took the applause: five home wins in a row – a new club record - 8 games undefeated and top of the table. Arnie can relax, at least for a day or two, as things are going well. All the club has to do is to work even harder to get the crowd figures up, this team deserves better.

My MoM has to go to Bojic, whether he is falling over the ball or sending in great crosses, giving it away or getting it back, he is an unstoppable force and the two goals are pleasant reward for a player who always gives everything.

2 points – John Hutchinson – smooth, intelligent and always in control; once dropping deep to cover the forward run of Zwaanswijk, another time covering Rose. A great captain’s example.

1 point – Sainsbury, another immaculate display but I was impressed also by Rose, McGlinchey, Rogic, Zwaanswijk and Montgomery.

Great result. We can be more clinical. And will be again. But once more we were completely dominant in all areas of the park. Everybody keeps saying how shit the Heart, Scum, MV etc are... well get used to that, either everybody we play against is very poor, or we are pretty f**king good. I personally think it's a lot more the latter myself.

Pedj, hilarious game. Great stuff.

Danny just wouldn't drop for him today, but his runs and interplay was still excellent and more goals will surely follow.

Everybody else, great perfomances. I disagree with Wombat and thought Bernie did a good job again tonight.

I agree with those who say Sainsbury is a future socceroo. Was not overly a fan of his as an RB. But at CB, apart form one glitch game, he's been outstanding.

Tommy.... ahhh Tommy, I NEVER say this, but he could well be the best young footballer Australia has produced since Kewell imo. I know, I know. But I think it's true. It's more than a pleasure to watch him play. I feel privileged to see him play in yellow. And Arnie and Clarkey and co are doing wonders with him, he's going form strength to strength I think, which is a decent reason he possibly consider staying for a little longer, he is developing really really well, and the things players often need to develop most in Europe, touch, vision etc, he has in spades, and the areas where he has improved and can continue to do so, strength, speed, fitness, mental strength (90 minute player) come experience.... He can get here, playing n the ACL, and playing for the NT.

Worst case scenario, imo, another 9 months odd is Australia will not hamper his football journey at all. And more likely improve it. He is in a great playing environment, playing great football under a great coach. There is no rush. But he is pretty hot property. ANd I;m sure his agent s seeing $$$ signs.

Best case as I see it, is going to Europe on the back of leading the charge in winning the double and being the first ever HAL team to win the ACL, this could see him go to a true great of European football and onto a very special career. Of which i think he is capable.

The BAY went OFF tonight! Massive kudos and thanks to all. The loudest it's been in a long time. Made me proud to be a Mariner, especially as I'm hating this constant bullshit we have to deal with, with people not accepting that we are what we are. The smallest regional club, and pulling 7K on a friday night is going to be pretty standard no matter how you feel about it, and is still a decent result for us. Want more people? You'll see them at late Saturday night games, NYE and finals. And that's it. It's not football related. It's not lacklustre fans and lack of interest. It's our demographic bloody reality.

Personally I think the club should go after this bullshit perception head on sooner rather than later and get stuck into anyone who makes these comments, so the players don't buy into any bullshit about them not being appreciated. This could scupper a season, and make GA fell under appreciated and considering greener pastures also. Also we the loyal fans and our Mariner loving community deserve better too.

The day Sydney can pull a 90K crowd, come and talk to me. Till then STFU.

Or we could always give away tickets like NCJ to inflate our crowds and go broke.

Just seen the goals on YouTube: brilliant strikes both of them - Bolton should gave saved the first but it was a wicked dipping shot hit with real power and I don't think the second took a deflection? Almost identical to the first. Great play by Pedj.

On top of FP's comments I really want to highlight the brilliance of McBreen's touch a number of times, quality quality stuff

Good work with these each week Roy - are you sending them through to CCM or 442 or the like, even as a blog?
Not as yet, have been thinking about it; might post on 442 although a blog might be the way. And thanks for your kind words...
