I thought that seemed to be the plan but can't see it happening now. He might go for a slightly longer campaign and call it for May 3 on the week before the budget is due. Has to be a min of 31 days so. Then the question becomes what are you trying to avoid telling us by not having a budget.

Unlikely to call this weekend (disaster relief - not campaigning) for April 12 or for an election for 19th April (Easter Weekend) or 26th April (Anzac weekend).

Budget due March 25. He can call it for May 3 on the weekend before the budget but that which would make for a 41 or 42 day campaign. Traditionally not a good thing but given that current MSM frames every question as 'Peter Dutton says' a longer campaign where he can make his points rather than have to speak to every Peter Dutton thought bubble may be a good thing this time.

Of course if the budget is looking good he can, deliver the budget and campaign on it before calling for a 17th May election.
