I am amazed, what a collection of well thought out comments in this thread.
Not a tin hat to be seen anywhere.
Maybe we can now move forward.
I agree with most of the comments here but what is really needed is a new spine for the team.

A good experienced centre back. (but not a nut case or Julian Watts).
Huke will be ok at DM.
A constructive attacking mid (a la Juninho). (I'm gonna win the lottery too).
A striker who is a poacher (without attitude baggage).

Get those right the rest will fall into place.

Easy isn't it.

Personally I think we do have some good players for this level, but a few things are lacking.

I believe Wilko is not the man we need for captain, he doesn't seem passionate enough on the field, he doesn't have that leadership look about him.  The perfect 'type' of captain is Muscat, his ability is there, he stands up for his team, isn't scared to put himself about and you can see him being so passionate for his team mates EVERY TIME HE PLAYS!  Jedinak should have been our captain whilst he was here IMO.  Based on the current squad who would I elect captain? I don't know tbh, we need someone to fill this hole.

Danny does have the ability, he wouldn't have been player of the year in season 2 if he didn't, IMO he needs some guideance and leadership both on and off the field, yes someone like Bozza.  He's young and only going to get better.

Our defence is just woeful at the moment, Wilko has definitely played his best football for us at RB, Heff does have the ability but has been so poor this season, Pedj was good at the start of the season a lot of people were singing his praises but after seeing him in the last few months appears nothing but a squad player.  Boogs is strong but lacks pace, like Stringers and Porter can play anywhere on the right ok, but what we lack is a LEADER, someone to organise the defence, get stuck in and this IMO should be our captain, but who is available?

Huke has shown that he might be able to do a job and I believe we have wingers good enough for this level in Kwasnik, Elrich, Caceres and Porter but we lack serious creativity in the middle of the field.  We need a player like Juninho (obvioudly not himself though as he's past it), someone who has built their game on skill and vision, again who the f**k do you get?

Up front, goodbye Mrdja and bring in a quality goal scorer who can work with Matty, Matty is strong, annoys defenders, has learnt how to finish and if we had a player like Sterjovski next to him would be very happy at the fire power available.

It's all very easy us saying what we need but where do these players come from? We have to pay them, we have to be able to attract them to our club, LG and PT need to take a risk and sign some decent players or risk being involved in a very long season next year!

There'd be a fair few from Europe who can fill the playmaker role that may be available...

Good points there boys!
I see the central midfield role as critical. The Jedi RAN the middle of the park not only distributing the ball but snuffing out 75% of oppostion attacks which I think created the illusion of a solid defence when in reallity they were playing like they are at the moment? I like the idea of Huke in there somewhere, his first game in the ACL he was very dominant but I think has been forced to curb his physicallity because of the soft way they referee in Asia. I think the A League rougher style of play will suit him much better.

Who? For a decent price?

The midfield area definitely needs addressing since both Jedinak and Pondeljak have never been adequately replaced. This would enable the Mariners to have more subtlety to their game which is what Pondeljak gave to the team.

Tommy cant be replaced at HAL level period IMHO.

We competed well in S1 with "known" faces and that fell apart badly in S2. Rather than recognise the jump in quality we got "lucky" because Jedi covered for a pretty ordinary side in S3 and we outperformed. S4 was ticking over ok until he went and then the true horror of our lack of youth development and player recruitment was revealed.

Having said that, its done now and we need to move on. One thing to remember is it takes a season or 2 to build a decent side and we have a few months. A few shrewd purchases and a mid table finish for us will be good next year while we (hopefully) build a yoof side as we are already a year behind everyone else.

Good summary there. I tend to think that V3 was a case of being the best of a bad bunch- the quality of the league was terrible, and add to that Melbourne and Adelaide United had poor seasons they were always likely to bounce back from.

In fact, some (including myself) did expect CCM to miss the finals in V4, but surely few imagined that Sydney would be so poor, never mind Newcastle who were never likely to repeat their feats anyway.

I actually thought the team in season 3 of the A-League for us, was quite good.

Vidmar was holding the backline together quite well, and showing glimpses of his old self. We had Jedi starting to dominate the centre, and we had Petrovski and then later on, Aloi$i, banging in goals. Backed up well by Tommy & Hutch did some good work in patches.

If there's one thing that clubs should have learned about the A-League by now - and this IS something we should have learned back in Season 2, not after a disastrous ACL campaign - and that is that the League is on the improve and unless you are active EVERY YEAR, getting better players or making sure the kids come through better, you will be left behind.

For every Jedi and Pedj we've uncovered, we've also had little use of the McMasters, Owens and Tomasevics of the Football world.

And remember, for the slaps on the back that the club gets for unveiling the Jedi or finding Pedj or Huke in lower leagues in the UK, the same people in the club also decided to run with Russell Woodruffe, Leo Carle, Vuko Tomasevic, Jamie McMaster, etc. etc. There's no secret formula, just a fair assessment of talent to fit into the current team and a lot of luck they'll be able to play at the required level.

What DOES bring me to anger though, is the perseverance with players like Mrdja after quite a few false starts to seasons, & playing non performers like Hutchinson or Spencer when they were clearly out of form, against the non playing of other players and then being quickly shuffled off the roster after a season of next to no gametime.

How cant you say Kwasnik isnt deadwood he was useless the 1st time around then walked out on us and now trying to come back and do something.

Who cares if he scored 2 goals against Pohang hes still a ball hogging deadwood.

Goodbye Kwasnik in my book

Keep Heff and Gumps. Hutch, Dylan and Nik to go.

Also spend some money and bring in someone top class - yes we may have almost had Chippefield but there are plenty of Socceroos who may come home after the World Cup start scouting now.

Not winning a game in 5 mths is digusting - time to bring out the wallet and get quality players Mariners.

regardless of your views he's signed for two years so he's here for a while and will most likely continue scoring goals, even if just to annoy the shit out of the likes of you.

he's now the mariners greatest ever scorer (again) having taken the crown back from c**tface petrovski. 16 goals for this club, not bad from midfield I reckon.

Has anyone managed to find out why he was subbed in the Pohang game, after scoring twice and looking the most likely etc??? If not because he picked up a knock then a bizare move from Lawrie.

Keep going Kwas, surely these people are going to let go of a few games (in your wrong position) 2 seasons ago.

Record goals scorer..................
