Team performance 2024/2025

Small world. I engaged his father to do some painting a few years ago and Jake was helping. A very nice guy. I wish him well. Football is a tough gig.

As a newcomer to the forum I should establish that I am usually a bit of an optimist but this season I think the performance positive points have been fewer than I’d like.

I have a lot of overall thoughts on our performances (cause I think too much about them). We strike me as a team that's preseason plan never quite worked out, and we aren’t too clear on where to go next. Our formation and the makeup of it seem to be changing every week. Are we playing 442? 343? Something in between? We should have this kind of thing nailed down.

Big picture problems are that injuries have created a lack of depth, no one having a breakout season and largely having an unclear route to goal.

We have scored 12 goals this season, equal with Brisbane and only Perth have scored less. Of those 12, there have been 2 own goals (plus two with heavy deflections in the last 2 weeks) and 5 of those have been headed goals. It largely seems like our main plan to get goals is getting the ball out wide and crossing it in for the attackers. But this has been widely inconsistent due to often only having one player in the box and the runs just not quite being there.

Kuol has enjoyed having absolutely no competition this season, but averaging a goal every 462 minutes (which is almost generous considering that both goals came in the same game), we need something better up front - it does pain me to say it, and I wish he could recapture his pre-overseas form. But then again, according to Sofascore, he only averages 1.7 shots per game so getting the ball to him is also a huge part of this problem. I hope Edmo comes back from this injury and hits the back of the net a few times. I think he is a more complete striker than Kuol but he has been here a year now, he should be settled and ready.

There is a gulf between our back 6 and front 4. Our other attacking players have really lacked consistency between them. In moments all of Theo, Brandtman, Ngor and Wilson have shown something, but they have never all done it at the same time or consistently. I do like the look of Eames and Brandtman quite a bit (and now De Lima) but leaning on such youth shows our depth problem. Feijao I have not been convinced by and I like Doka out wide the most - I think he has struggled with the pressure when he has been the second striker, trying to create everything with players around him that seem they aren’t too fussed one way or another. Doka seems more comfortable out wide. We don't have any subs that we can rely on to reliably turn the game on its head like we have in the past couple seasons.

I put McCalmont and Steele as part of the back six, since they are often so deep and very similar defensive players. I think Jacko planned to build our midfield around Alfie this season, but it's been a difficult thing to do since it takes foreign signings a while to settle into the Australian game. I think he is coming good, but he and Steeley are too similar for me. A midfield composition of two hardworking players can work, but without the flair further up the field it becomes a bit of a sore point.

At the beginning of the season I thought that this season would be big from Tapp, Di Pizio and Steeley with Brandtman becoming known as a weapon off the bench. The first two have had unfortunate injuries, Steeley has been stepped on / over shadowed by Alfie and Brandtman has shown glimpses but probably hard to become that weapon when the rest of the attack has been limp.

With how long it takes new signings to settle, I am not that optimistic about the cavalry arriving in Jan, other than maybe Lachie Wales since he is a local and experienced in the league.

Who has everyone's player of the season been so far? Mine was Mauragis, before he joined the injury list.
