Conciliatory Culina searches for common ground with turbulent Jet Milicevic

LJUBO MILICEVIC may have divided opinion since his February arrival at the Newcastle Jets but new coach Branko Culina has backed the larger-than-life personality, declaring he "wouldn't swap him for any other defender in the country".
A string of on- and off-field incidents involving Milicevic appeared to suggest he wouldn't last his year-long deal at the Jets, particularly when the former Socceroo lashed out at owner Con Constantine alleging he was reluctant to invest in the well-being of the playing group.
Milicevic, 28, said he was being chased by Asian and European clubs and that his "peanuts" salary would require negotiation if he was to stick around.
However Culina would like the former FC Thun captain to stay at the club and sees the potential for him to rediscover his best form.
"How good Ljubo becomes is entirely up to Ljubo. I'm certainly there to help him and assist him and try and get the best out of him, but he is an outstanding player," Culina said yesterday. "All I'll say is that when Ljubo is focused and playing football, very few players in Australia can match him.
"The challenge for Ljubo is to focus on playing and not to get himself involved in [off-field] events that may prevent him from showing what he's capable of. When he's focused, as he showed during the Asian Champions League and as he did last weekend, I wouldn't swap him for any other defender in the country."
Milicevic tucked away the match-winning penalty in last Saturday's friendly against Brisbane Roar at Ballymore, capping a stand-out display in defence.
But Culina knows that if Milicevic continues to shine at this level, his hunger for a move abroad could grow - especially if he can break into the national team, although he has fired off at coach Pim Verbeek for overlooking him in the past.
"Every player wants to go abroad and there isn't a player who thinks 'I'm happy to stay' if the opportunity is there, particularly when it's clear that if you do play overseas, you've got a better chance of being selected in the national team," Culina said. "But Ljubo's been there, he knows what to expect if he goes and he's been back long enough to know what to expect if he stays.
"If he goes, it's got to be the right opportunity for Ljubo, it can't be just going anywhere for the sake of it. He has to make sure that he's got the right club and right place It's most important that Ljubo enjoys his football."
Meanwhile, the deal to bring Italian star Fabio Vignaroli to the Jets on a permanent deal is all but sealed with the classy midfielder agreeing in principle to stay at the club for at least the next 12 months.
The Herald understands Vignaroli, 33, is looking to buy a property in Newcastle - rather than rent as most foreign players do - and could be set for a long-term stay. While his language skills are limited, his wife teaches English and the couple is eager for their three young sons to spend time in a new country.
The club has not yet submitted documentation to Football Federation Australia to confirm his marquee status but that is expected to happen next week once the two parties finalise the minor details of the deal.
Once Vignaroli's deal is done and a back-up goalkeeper to Ben Kennedy signed, there will be only one spot left on the Jets' roster. After seeing a handful of trialists play in Wednesday night's 2-0 win over APIA Leichhardt, Culina is likely to give a select few a run in Sunday's match against Sydney FC at the Sydney Football Stadium.
"There's a fair bet one of them could be in line to get that last spot and I might also have room for an injury-replacement player for Marko Jesic," Culina said. "I'd much rather sign a player who I've seen first hand."
