disgraceful from gary van egghead, the situation he finds himself in is con's fault with all the players leaving but you dont publically pick out individual players for criticism letalone do what he did to pinto, i hope the kid is mentally strong and comes back from it - after last night he would be unlikely to make the cut for the top flight again, he may need to move on

From today's Newcastle Herald:
Van Egmond brought on Pinto and Ross as the Jets searched for a goal.
But Pinto lasted just 16 minutes before he was hooked for Kaz Patafta.
Van Egmond defended his substitution of Pinto during a Fox Sports television interview after the game.
He said the 18-year-old midfielder was making mistakes and was "the worst player out there".
But later in the post-match press conference he tempered his comments.
"He was having a very torrid time. I think every ball he gave away. He was getting less and less confident. I thought rather than prolong the agony for the kid take him off and put someone else on," van Egmond told the press conference.
"That is what you get sometimes with young ones. They look fantastic at training and in the youth league but throw them in and it becomes too much.
"There are two chains of thought: you can leave them out there and let them try and grind through, which can be detrimental, or you can try and save him. That is what I tried to do. He is a good young player with a bright future, but it was not his night tonight."

he knew he was going to cop a pasting for what he had said and done, sometimes it takes a bigger man to admit you did the wrong thing. If anyone should have been hooked it should have been D'Apuzzo, he was a disgrace out there
GVE is a dick and I think his first comment was unprofessional however I think to sub a sub because as manager you think he isn't making the grade is fine. This is professional sports where results are expected, the fact that he is young has nothing to do with it. You are paid to perform and if you are not you deserve to be hooked.
If LM were to do the same with the hope that the team would get a result would most of you be saying the same thing. I love being biased as much as the next person but some of the posts regarding this issue are comical.

LM wouldn't do the same thing because if there was a chance the boy wouldn't perform close to standard he wouldnt have made the field. The fact is you don't "save" a kid by hooking him after 16 mins of his debut.
He should have let him play on to gain confidence. Imagine what the guy will be thinking next time he takes the field? Even before he gets there there will be no excitment, it will be nerves and "i hope i don't get taken off again".
The only thing GVE did last night was set his development back a substantial amount of time.

Totally agree that he shouldn't have been playing, but with all the dramas at the club and lack of established players what do you expect... he can't forfeit a match! But the fact that he was selected makes his age irrelevant he still has a job to do!

The fact is Newcastle did not look like getting anything out of the game in the second half, they are not playing for a finals spot and the senior players such as Joel Griffiths and D'apuzzo were very ordinary in that game. Leave the kid on - for goodness sake he almost scored - and give him the chance to improve. Or you could do what GVE did, take him off, drain any confidence that was left in him away and then berate him in the press. GVE is a classless, tactless idiot. Good luck to Pinto. I hope he can bounce back. I just hope he does it at a different club
