Joel: Time Is Ticking - 442

EXCLUSIVE: Joel Griffiths wants his Newcastle Jets future sorted now and warns he isnt prepared to let the issue drag on long into the A-League season.
The Johnny Warren Medal winner insists that Newcastle is where he wants to be but admits hed be lying if he said there was no other interest in him.

The striker points to the experience of a former teammate and says he is anxious to avoid going through the same scenario.

Griffiths told au.fourfourtwo.com: I want my future to be sorted sooner rather than later. Its not something I want to see drag on and still have it hanging over my head later into the season.

Newcastle is where I want to be and I suppose the club has first refusal. But I dont want a situation like Bridgey (Mark Bridge) last season. That took a long time to be sorted and I think it affected him.

I want my head to be clear during the season, with my future sorted and I can just concentrate on my football.

I think the balls in the clubs court. Now its time for some serve and volley.

As well as the issue of a new contract, Griffiths is also focusing on trying to battle back to full fitness. A nagging ankle injury that he picked up during his spell in Japan is still troubling him.

He said: Ive had a cortisone injection but I wouldnt say it (the ankle) is great.

Hopefully it will begin to settle down. At the moment Id say Im about 70 per cent and I want to make sure Im 100 per cent for the start of the new season.

Its very frustrating but you have to make sure you dont do too much before youre ready to. The last thing I want to do is put myself in a situation where Im back to square one.

Contract and ankle issues aside, Griffiths is optimistic about the season ahead and happy with the new faces at the club.

He said: We know people are going to be looking to knock us over but when you look at it weve still got the nucleus of the side won it (the A-League) last year.

Theres some new faces as well and everyones looking forward to getting started. To achieve something in football is hard, to back it up is even harder and thats what we have to do.

Why sign a guy as marquee, when no one here knows the name?

I dont expect anyone from where you are to know his name.
You have no football knowledge.

Some things you post on here are valid, but that post just makes you look like a complete wanker!

And here I was thinking his user name made him look like a complete wanker. ;D

26 goals in 56 games or whatever it is does sound impressive but there's so many factors to consider.  How will he settle in Newcastle? Does he like fibro homes? How does the game over there compare to over here? Will this league be more physical and take him half a year to settle in?

Watch youtube all you like but it doesn't tell you how he'd go over here.

Will he get the nod to be marquee considering the FFA will look at :

- Number of international caps the player has and how recent they were

- His experience in International football league/s and the standard played at

- The ability and potential to contribute to the development and success of the club

- The value of the most recent playing contract

- The international or national profile of the Player and his potential marketability for the Club and the A-League

I'm sure if the Jets had any sense what so ever they would have got authorisation for his status before getting him over here ???

Also, how will Joel 'sack whacker' Griffiths feel about this considering there has been plenty of talk that he could become their marquee player?
He is here on a loan deal, and 442 state that FFA has already granted him the marquee status. As he is here for one year atm its a question of how well he adapts to the A-League as to whether he stays or goes beyond that and whether Griffo gets the marquee spot.
And if any of you bothered to read the press it also states that our CEO stated when the Zura signing was announced that the priority was to get the roster sorted first, and now that we have done that the focus now switches to signing Joel, Adam and Ante to new contracts.

The Scum are going to be extremely thin at the back if this comes true. Apparently Kewell wants North at Galatasaray?

In all fairness to North he improved a lot last season and showed that he has the ability to at least have a go overseas.  It's been in the media for about a year that he has the desire to go overseas and if there's ever a time that he will do it it's this season.

It's a bit of a trend that a fair few teams will be short at the back if they lose 1 or 2 players, e.g. Sydney, Newcastle and QLD.

I have said we were short too but the signing of Pedj and recovery of Os makes me feel better, would be nice if Stringers could catch some luck!

Yeah I was worried about our defense as well but i feel it may be our strongest position as the season starts. pedj, boogs, wilks, heff, dapuzzo, ossie, clark, porter and jedi are all capable defenders but ideally you don't want to have to worry about jedi and ports playing in defense

Jets Launch Into Pitch Battle

Staff Writer
Aug 9 2008 19:10

NEWCASTLE Jets coach Gary van Egmond has launched an angry attack over the club's lack of access to their home track.
Van Egmond is furious that his team has yet to train at EnergyAustralia Stadium in the build up to the new A-League season and is just as annoyed over the amount of training time Newcastle Knights are spending on the pitch.

He told The Herald: "We've got our first home game coming up next week and they're crucifying it. They train on it three or four times a week and we can't get a session on it.

"During the season we train on it once a week prior to our game, but we haven't been there once yet and I don't know when our first training session there will be.

"There are two teams in this town, as was shown with the support we saw for football here last season, and we share the stadium.

"All we want is a little bit of respect and some acknowledgment that we play here too. Both codes are entitled to a fair go."

Newcastle Knights chief executive Steve Burraston disagrees with the Jets' view of the pitch.

He said: "I can't agree with him on that. We played there on Monday night and I walked across it after the game and it seemed in pretty good nick to me.

"What do they want us to do? Do they want us not to train and not to play there? Should we just pack our bags, go home, call the season quits and let them train there every night?"

The Jets begin their A-League defence next Friday when they face F3 rivals Central Coast Mariners.

Fairs fair to the scum the Knights abuse their lease (I believe they are the major tennant ??).

We need to keep a sense of perspective, the scum are fierce rivals but the NRL are our enemies and the reaction of their half witted CEO just about sums up the world of denial these knuckledragging idiots live in.

Yeh, what a joke! Griffo has learnt nothing from last season's captaincy drama. He is still trying to be bigger than his club.

Agree and remember the ground is being F....ed for all A-League teams not just the Jets, and players can get hurt on these pitches. Also on a shit pitch its harder to play a decent match as passing becomes more difficult.

I sometimes wonder remember the China match when league on a wet track not only played their main matches but all youth and other matches and then blamed the stadium management as how where they to know a international World Cup Qualifer was to be played mid week.

On this issue I back the Jets.

The knights during the season, only trained once, maybe twice a week at EAS. They usually trained at Charlestown but they are training more and more on EAS. Yer its the finals, but in the week leading up to the GF, the jets mostly trained at Ray Watts Oval.
