Shocking performance. I find it very hard to account for.
It’s been obvious for a good while that we still lack the depth/quality needed to consistently compete and win, but this wasn’t really that issue last night.
Despite last nights horror show, this year we’ve obviously improved. So many games we could have deservedly taken points from - and you cannot say that of the past 3 years.
Ive said my piece on what I think is Okon’s unbalancing bias for Roux and that it cost us yesterday. But he’s not responsible for the two ridiculous hand overs for their two goals. Those are entirely on the players. And they were all mostly poor. Flat and lacked purpose from the get go and I have no idea why. Have they truly lost confidence? Was Sydney the straw that broke their back... has to be hard to keep going oh so close but still fail. Is it the curse of Roar? Our stats against them are unbelievable. Losing the toss with that god awful gale blowing? Sure didn’t help. Maybe it was the Hoole stuff. And maybe it’s all on okon. But maybe it isn’t. On that point we don’t know, so we really shouldn’t pretend to.
Personally, I’m hoping it was an abberation. Reminded me of the Adelaide game. Last night was truly awful. But we’ve showed our quality in many other games already - just last week huh (which is why for mine the performance was so disappointing) but it also gives the lie to those screaming that the sky is falling and that Okon with scant resources is the problem. Ditch him now or even just bay for his blood, and all I see it that doing is making things worse. And to do it when you don’t even know he’s the problem... unwise imo.
Also, unless Sean and others are bald faced liars, the off field world is also clearly going well. So the whole culture is gone stuff is also unhelpful and untrue.
But all that said, I don’t discount that you can’t keep losing year after year and expect it not to really hurt your crowds and morale. As a supporter it’s been a lot of expensive and awful experiences.
I also appreciate the business realities. I’ve been on board with needing a tight belt. But, Sean, Mike if you’re listening, I can’t help thinking that there’s not too many who’d have done much better than Okon with what he’s had, and so that means the writing is on the wall. Unless you want to gamble with what’s left of the good will of your supporter base, then another loss leader for a couple of seasons to help ensure we can compete and restore some good will before your fan base loses all hope seems vital.
If the answer is no. As others have said, it is a big worry. I’m just not sure how much more punishment the majority of fans can take.
Roar fans are ‘hurting’ they say. But they have no idea if they think that’s suffering.

The reason was storms sub. limited him to only one further sub effectively forcing Okon in to choosing between him and Trent. Should not have been the case.

Appiah cramping forced him into Trent on the wing but Storm's sub beforehand shouldn't have happened.

It really is the million dollar question. That wasn't them. Nor was it the team that played against the Jest or even City (though we weren't great that night either). The fact we had the same coach for these games, and the players were the ones mostly awful last night without a change of tactics or shape, is why I'm not on the Okon out train.

This has to be the most frustrating thing about our current predicament.
In previous seasons it's been reasonably evident we lack the cattle and the class of player to truly make any kind of impact. This season, we've seen it in practice on brief occasions, but the results still aren't coming.

I think so too. Dashing hopes is more painful than never getting them up in the first place.
Okon makes mistakes, and he's stubborn. See Kubi, Storm and his tactics, but I think it's abundantly clear he can shape this side into a very good team with a bit more resources. Without them, I'm not at all convinced bringing in someone new and things won't just get worse again.
Players like McGing and Kubi have improved a lot under Okon, and without him, we don't sign DDS and probably others besides.
We're close. Unless we play like last night. Then we don't even look HAL standard. I'm still gobsmacked by it. But reflecting further I think, with ineffective wingers and before Powells great goal, Maccarone for all his diving had had ten times as much impact as Powell - which is very disappointing - then add an off night from our backs, DDS, and Melling's mistake... and we were done.
DDS has not looked the same since he went away, hope this changes fast.
I'm wondering if the Backs, DM's, and DDS have lost confidence in their forward men. Who could blame them. DDS playing balls to no one and clearly frustrated, so did Baro and Golec. We were so amateurish going forward and even playing out compared to the link play we've shown previously. They were flat as hell and confidence looked shot.

CCM are a team who play to the level of their opposition. Play a good team like Sydney or a reasonably good team like the Jest, and they play at that level. Play a crap side like the Roar or the Nix, and they run the possibility of losing to a crap side like that. Having had more time to think about last night, I don't think the Roar "curse" had anything to do with it. Just the nature of this team right now. If they'd been winning a ton and then churned that out last night I might think there's some hoodoo on, but how many other games this season have been like that?
I'm tipping a 1-1 draw with WSW next weekend, while I wouldn't be surprised to beat City or one of the other top 4 sides again...

I think it follows on from my earlier comment about a lack of club culture. Take Liverpool under Klopp- they have a set style they play to, and while it sometimes doesn't work for them (especially against teams that want to sit back with numbers behind the ball and defend) at the same time they are capable of putting 3 or more goals past a side that is playing for more than a scoreless draw- which is most of the PL.
This current CCM team don't have a particular playing identity. They don't have that frenetic, up-beat diamond of Ange at Brisbane, or Arnie's more patient grinding style. Without a particular 'style' to how they play (never mind one that works) they get hypnotised into playing to their opposition. Definitely needs to change, because the majority of teams in the current league are average...even the 2nd placed Jest are fairly inconsistent...

I went to bay 16 last night with the point of making contact with old friends from the active group from V1 all those years ago.
The only one I found was Jimmy (definitely worth more money).
We discussed old names and who was where from the glory days of the Marinators.
Some have moved to better views (like me), some we had no idea about and some (no Names had defected).
No one I approached even could point out Wombat in Bay 15.
I wandered further afield looking for familiar faces and could not find any.
I found the entire exercise fairly depressing and it started me wondering about the Mariners' culture we used to have and where it has gone. And also the place of CCM in the League.
Has it gone with the original hard core or have the hard core gone because the culture left.
Anyway I am feeling old, depressed and despondent at he moment.
To Peter and Jimmy, carry on the good fight guys there are many of us relying on you.
