Round 17

Perth unchanged from last week, Adelaide United start a 4-1-4-1 formation with Cristiano as a lone striker.

What's with Viddie's attatchment to a lone striker? :headbutt:

Still 1-0, 55' gone. Dadi just missed from 8 yards with not a defender for five yards around him...Newcastle deserve him if they get him.

Assuming Adelaide hold on for the win, and Melbourne and Queensland win, there'll be a gap opening up at the end of the round that might grow.

You'd think Adelaide rode their luck, but they also did well to win what was billed as a tough game given Perth's home form. If they beat Sydney next week at AO (a game I'm flying over to attend BTW, because I'm going to meet my AU-supporting buddies), it'll set them up well for an intense schedule in the coming month.

Standings as of tonight:
1.Adelaide United- 27 (2 games in hand)
2.Central Coast Mariners- 25
3.Queensland Roar- 23
4.Melbourne Victory- 23
5.Wellington Phoenix- 22
6.Sydney FC- 20
7.Perth Glory- 19
8.Newcastle Jets- 15

If Queensland and Melbourne win they will both go to 26, those two then face each other in Round 18.

From today's SMH....... scathing, but f*cking funny.

"At some point last Sunday, just before half-time in the Sydney-Perth match, it occurred to us that John Aloisi was potentially on the verge of a radical redefinition of the art of striking - one in which the striker's function would not be to put the ball in the back of the net, but to shield it from the attention of rival players, before quietly shepherding it over the byline for a goal kick. The first of Aloisi's now bankably YouTube-able blunders was an excellent case in point: instead of making contact with the ball with his left leg in the customary forward-thrusting direction - or, to use the modern lingo, "striking" the ball - Aloisi bravely sought instead to step over the top of the ball and ensure its safe passage past the otherwise protective hands of Perth keeper Tando Velaphi and over the dead-ball line. The second miss was, of course, even better: Aloisi, with a perfectly, brutally open goal in front of him, was being forced forward by the motion of his own body in such a way that it would have been near-impossible for him not to collide with the crossed ball and force it into goal, but then seemed to stop in a deliberate attempt to avoid hitting the ball. This was willed non-contact, the centre forward's art reinvented as a form of human rights (above all, no matter what you do, protect the ball from harm), and it raised uncomfortable questions for anyone who has ever delighted in the sight of the cheeky toe poke, the pile-driver from 30 metres out, or the thumping curler from the edge of the area. For all our love of goal-scoring, Aloisi seemed to be saying, "has anyone ever stopped to think how the ball might feel in all this? Getting kicked around all day doesn't strike us as much fun". In this sense, Aloisi's misses were not so much an invitation to jump on the fan forums and declare him "a fooken waste of money" as a visionary invocation to reconsider the thoughts and feelings, long trampled on, of your average match ball. It's just a shame, then, that we prefer the former option. Bring back David Zdrilic, we say. Where his feet failed, his kneecap could always be counted on to get the job done.

On an unrelated note, what the hell has happened to Sydney's crowds over the last few weeks? Even the Cove looks to have abandoned the "Sky Blues" of late. Seriously, if the smattering of 50 or so die-hards that now sprawl themselves out, 10 seats a person, over the home end of the SFS, are enough to make a "cove", then the $2 inflatable wading pool we have at home ranks as a "harbour". [Columnist assumes brace position.]"

It's quite possible Sydney won't win another game this season based on recent form and confidence. Perth have only one more home game v Melbourne while one of their away games is in Newcastle so they'll be confident of points in those.

Wellington's goal difference is their downfall if it were to come down to that.
