Also seems possession is meaning less and less each year.
Some of our best games this year were when we were 35/40%.

But as seen below the refs have been told to let the game flow and sure as hell ain’t handing out yellows for breaking down attacking play.

So currently the more successful teams are playing smart:
* Fouling high up the pitch
* Frustrating opponents with very tight/ strict defensive lines
* Not attacking hard for the sake of it, but waiting for the right opportunities / support

And the main thing that we really failed at tonight, don’t give up the ball in your own half!

Play safe until almost half way into the opposition half unless progressing a quick wide counter like Wellington, etc with the players we have need to adjust more with the tactical decision making if we want to sneak wins and gain a run of form.

I can’t even pinpoint what was most disturbing.

The inability to complete passes.

The constantly playing backwards not forwards.

The inability to score.. even with a few balls into the box, nobody was on the end of them.

Auckland could basically walk the ball into the goal, while our defenders were in no man’s land.

The mad aid swings and headers to nowhere.

The otter lack of cohesion or unity.

Have I missed anything?

Yes, @Wombat i hear you on the keeper. Still don’t think it’s his fault per se, but yeah.

Spot on the new direction from the referee head has changed the game this season. The let things go and the game flow is failing as there is so much more hanging on, pulling shirts and strategically fouling players and getting away with it a team who tries to play football is at a disadvantage. AFC got away with so much tonight and we just let them push us around. Steele in particular was just useless all game and didn’t win a single contest.

I re-joined the Yellow Army for the 1st half.

How things have changed. I didn't recognise a single person from my era. Not one. 🥲 Credit to the new generation for keeping Bay 16 going despite being very few in number. And despite the shit show on the park.

I gave Doka all six points. I didn't think anyone else rose above mediocrity. A big fan of Kaltak, but he was simply aweful in that position. Steele continues to show he's a lightweight without Balard and Nizzy. We were well beaten by a better organised, seemingly fitter, and more skilled Auckland. From kickoff it was clear we were 2nd class tonight. Jacko has major work to do to save the season.

Caught the 'Losers Train' home, with all the sad Mariners and Jets fans.

It was always going to happen with a young inexperienced keeper behind a young inexperienced team. I'm not sure what the solution is there - we went with 3 novices to replace a Socceroo.

Pav has shown he isn't up to it. Maybe jack should get a chance? Otherwise next in line is the 16 year old 🤷🏻‍♂️

They're trying to join the Paulsen/Glover/Gauci gravy train.

There were some positives tonight.

Doka as usual tried to do everything himself, took on players, took shots and ran after everything. He anticipated well and has the skill to run with the ball and retain possession. Never stopped trying sadly with no result. It is a shame he does not have players around him of similar abilities.

There was run with the ball with a beautiful turn by Eames that reminded me of past midfielders.

Some amazing determination with no holding back by McCalmont. I think he would have made a great rugby union scrum half.

The comments in the crowd are concerning, heard someone say why do we put ourselves through this every week. I totally understand how they are feeling.
Yet if you believe the comments of some others, we should all be strapping ourselves in front start to finish every week with goofy smiles on our faces and a high 5 and a cookie for the players at the end of it, even after a belting. Granted, absolutely we “should” be attending and supporting every match. But bloody hell sometimes it’s hard and draining. The reality is that for most of us, time is precious and setting aside a few hours of drudgery to feel like poo at the end of it, is hard to work up enthusiasm for.

The only positive I can take from tonight Is that Jacko said in his presser that he is being given the means by MC to do some business in the January window, so there is hope we might be able to strengthen in the areas we are currently lacking.

NYE has now become a big character test for us, coupled with the apparent off field issues, Jacko certainly has his work cut out for him getting the boys to rebound from tonight’s horror show.

. very early on you could tell it was going to be one of those days where 'they' get away will dozens of 'un'-professional fouls until we pick up the first yellow. i assumed it would be Steele for retaliation, but otherwise it was predictable

. we just don't have the players for that type of play ... or the experience - and it tells. once the game was gone, we finally started to get some calls - i would say partly due to SFE finally getting the whistle out of his arse (when the result was known) and partly because we started to drive forward

. don't get me wrong, i'm not making excuses - it is just a factor in our overall performance ... if we were ahelluva lot better, we could have been shit

I hope that is the case and it is not that he has just been allowed to boot some players. He does not seem the type to give too many second chances.
