The perfect way to start a Derby thread.

HUTCH = LEGEND
---------------------------------------------------
Hutchinson fires shots at the Jets

He may not be a player anymore but Central Coast assistant coach John Hutchinson has fired the first shots ahead of Saturday’s F3 derby with local rivals Newcastle.

Hutchinson, 35, has played in more F3 derbies than any other player with the fixture still firing up the former midfield tyro turned assistant coach.

And even though the Jets are in third place on the ladder, five places higher than the Mariners, Hutchinson was happy to stoke the rivalry fires by pointing to Newy's disastrous campaign last season, one in which they ended bottom of the league.

"I have always said it's a big game, especially for our members," Hutchinson told the Newcastle Herald.

"This club has always done better than what Newcastle has done.

"Newcastle is a bigger region and probably deserve a better football team than they have had in the past…

“The only thing Newcastle has that we haven't is a wooden spoon."

However, ‘Hutch’ was understandably more charitable towards the Jets and their coach Scott Miller, himself a former Gippsland Falcons product like Hutchinson.

"I was in the first team at the time and he [Scott Miller] was in the youth team," Hutchinson said.

"I was under-age and when the youth team made the finals I came down and played.

"He was a defender, quite good and aggressive.

"I'm not sure if that has changed. I actually know the Miller family and watched Scott go overseas as a coach. He has done a great job.

"Most coaches who get a team that finishes last, they have to work back to front." the former midfielder said.

"He has done that. They have been hard to break down in the games I have watched.

"They get good numbers behind the ball and are well organised.”

And Hutchinson predicted an intense battle at Hunter Stadium, with new passions being passed on by people like himself to the younger guard at Gosford.

"It's my job to pass on what it means to be in a derby and what it means for our club.

"Last derby was probably the most boring game of football I have watched," he said in a swipe at former coach Phil Moss.

"When Tony Walmsley took over [from Phil Moss] we changed our style.

"We were privileged to have Graham Arnold up here as a coach. He did a wonderful job with the team and we played great attacking football.

"We are trying to do the same with this team.

"They [Mariners] are fearless, why not let the kids play. They want to play, they want to press. Let's do it within a structure, make sure it's done properly.

"Newcastle obviously like to get men behind the ball. It will be a good game to watch."

Hutcho ....... "They [Mariners] are fearless, why not let the kids play. They want to play, they want to press. Let's do it within a structure, make sure it's done properly.

I think the "press" - if focused on, could really be the ticket to 3 points this week.

I posted in the Nix thread about it before reading Hutcho's comments here.

I'm re-posting it in here because, again I think it could be pivotal in beating the Scum and be the start to getting our season 'back on track' to being a succesful one at that and it focuses specifically on Hutcho's comments on " wanting to press".....

That would be an interesting 'back to the future' setup:

Izzo
Roux McGing Poscoliero Rose
Monty
Ferreira Austin
Fitzy
Heffernan O'Donovan

Ostensibly your suggestion appears to be a diamond 4 - 4 - 2, but squint your eyes and it's also/or can be a 4 - 1 - 3 - 2.

Walmsley made it clear pre-season that he was relinquishing the tenure of season's previous where we were predominantly playing with the 2 holding defensive midfielders- Hutch and Monty, and wanting to bring about this new 'attacking philosphy' using just the one DM.

Posco showed some promise in that role whilst Monty was recovering from injury in those pre-season games, he tried Ascroft there as well in the the last psgame, the Fans Day 11v11.

Walmsy also wants 3 up front 'pressing' opposition, this means that the 2 AM's Fitz/Cac sit in behind those 3.

It's essentially a 4-3-3, with the front 3 being (or meant to be) 'flat/in a line' whilst the middle 3 aren't 'flat/in line', but instead are an inverted/ or up-side down triangle.

This is creating a problem around Monty or more importantly in front of him as the distance between him and the 2 AM's is too great, creating a hole.

It's whats leaving us vulnerable on the counters, proven by one of our CB's 'rushing out' from his 'defensive line' position (leaving an attacker behind that was next to him also) to shut down players coming forward either side of Monty when he's central.

Posco is the biggest culprit of doing this. He gets beaten and McGing is on his own or maybe with either Roux or Rosey at times if he's lucky. But their being found out to be be too far forward many a time & too many times together being too far forward at the same time!

Posco has a 'fail' & we have the situations where McGing is by himself with Roux scrambling back to help him - coincidentally  on Roux's far post side ...... the side where we're 'shipping' the goals.

I've yet to 'really' witness the press by all of our front 3, in a co-ordinated way.

Roy tries, but opposition CB's are just slipping sideway balls to the other CB and/or so on to their L/Rbacks and Fab and Austin aren't there cutting off or shutting down quick enough (coordinated press) ........& the opposition are getting 'out' by having time to play a good mid or long range pass.

I think we can remedy this and kill a few other birds with just a slight change to the 4 - 1 - 3 - 2 formation.

Roy & Heff both upfront hounding and keeping constant press. on the 2 CB's.

Austin - (Caceres or Fitz) - Fab as the next line of three behind them looking to pressure the L&R backs, with the middle player of our 3 (Cac/Fitz) pressuring oppositions DM.

Were essentially defending or 'pressing' the opposition from playing out with a 'pack of 5 yellow players'. Hoping to cause a turn-over or forcing them to play 'hurriedly' longer balls into the spaces either side of Monty ....... which will NOW
be occupied by our L&R Backs creating 'a flat 3' .... Rosey - Monty - Roux.

So in defence, during the press ONLY, we become a 2- 3 - 3 -2 formation. 2 lines in the middle third marking tightly and Roy & Heff pressuring hard like cattle-dogs.

"This Tony would finally let me see that 5 MINS of FURY that you spoke about in the Kendall Bar pre-game of Rnd1 that you promised we'd see when ever we lost the ball and tried to recover it back......I'm still eagerly waiting with baited breath"

Yes it leaves us with just the x2 CB's, but they will keep a high line, working the offside trap for the really long balls, which if are straight our Keeper? should keep in czech ;) by sweeping. If the long balls are diagonals then the nearest CB goes out to pressure and keep it near the sideline whilst Monty slips into the 'backline' to help the lone CB with the far post LRBack going with Monty or tracking a far post attacking run.

The nearer post LRBack either helps the CB that went wide by picking up whichever opposition player is nearest to the player which the ball carrier can pass to, either playing-back up the line or into the corner of the 18 yrd box which is predominantly the 2 options attacking players only have when they are pressurred out wide near the the side-line or corner-flag area's in our back 3rd.

This formation with this structure/ tactics can help us continue with the 'attacking/entertaining' mindset that TW wants to play but isn't quite delivering because of our defensive vulnerability.

It gives us 4 lines when 'pressing' the opposition trying to play out, and if we compress our lines by playing a modest high line (not on halfway ) it could give us our cake AND WE GET TO EAT IT! :)

I don't mind if we go out playing the old WM formation and all wearing hobnail boots and knickerbockers as long as we win.

To me, with the Jets playing decent football it gives this derby an edge it hasn't had for a while.
It would be good to get one over them when they are in this form.

At least keep our unbeaten run against them going.

As of Saturday, it will be 1,120 days since we lost a competitive match to them (going back to November 20 2012 - it's alright, we got over it and won the Grand Final that year). Oh, and it's nearly 8 years since they won a trophy. We've won both the Premiership and Championship in that time.

^ Dibo, there is not enough likes in the world for that post! LOVE IT!
All good. And if someone might remind the boys - we'll wear the odd ropey performance, we'll understand the odd flubbed line or missed cue, but the one night when we're all there wanting the absolutely nailed down performance is derby day.

For another fun stat (because I know you all love this shit), this is the first time they've come into a game higher than us on the table since October 23 2011 - by Saturday that's a lazy 1,483 days.

They're going to be all disoriented, up there in the finals positions.

Let's give them a nosebleed.

I reckon we'll go to the diamond / 4-1-2-1-2 / 4-1-3-2 looking formation that was talked about earlier here and in the other thread.

TBH, on thinking about what @Rowdy wrote, I think the 4-1-3-2 is the best way of describing it, and makes it look a lot like how we played it back in the days of Musti Amini etc.

Izzo
Roux McGing Poscoliero Rose
Monty
Fitzy Caceres Austin
Heffernan O'Donovan
The really helpful thing about this shape is that we can go a few ways without the ball, even switching to our old-school deep block if we need a breather and we're happy to have them have the ball for a bit:
Izzo
Roux McGing Poscoliero Rose
Fitzy Monty Caceres Austin
Heffernan O'Donovan
Given that we're set up to counter, I think we're going to try sitting higher, but we'll be mindful of the pace of the game. If it's going a million miles an hour, don't have a heart attack if we drop deeper and slow it down and catch our breaths, only to try to catch them off guard with fast breaks. It's not like we're short of speedsters.

Equally, if we want to go berko and play a really aggressive shape we can.
