Loved it! Really hard fought and deserved win. Windy Wellington is a difficult place to go and get three points so top marks for effort and perseverance. The football still isn’t flowing but we still managed to create many more opportunities then they did. The possession play was almost non-existent, there were too many long balls, poor decisions were made and execution was lacking but what showed through, epitomised by the ceaseless effort of Matty Simon, was the desire, the determination and the unquenchable spirit. Two wins on the bounce should mean greater confidence and better football. At last, I am excited again.
Mat Ryan was virtually a spectator such was the dominance of the defence, Bojic’s aberration aside. He was faultless in the air but, did I espy a slight miskick? He is human after all!
Bojic – WYSIWYG – the full package is super athlete but not much of a brain. He is relentless is chasing and tackling but fell asleep to allow Greenacre through.
Rose – not playing like a prospective Socceroo but is slowly getting better. One superbly timed run would have put him clear on goal but Zwaanswijk’s pass was over hit.
Wilko – the mortar that holds the bricks together in the defence. A consummate A league defender. The commentators’ comparing of him with Tobin has some merit. Is a great calming influence on the team.
Zwaanswijk – an absolute brute at the back. Fierce and frightening to play against. Virtually unbeatable.
Griffiths – another who is working back to form. One brilliant turn to allow Bozanic to set up Rose was pure class. Doesn’t mind getting stuck in either.
McGlinchey – the epitome of if you aren’t playing well you dig in and work your socks off. Has yet to rediscover his magic but you can’t fault the attitude.
Bozanic – another for whom it is yet to click. Again though, doesn’t hide. When he clicks so will Rose.
McBreen – the blue collar worker, sleeves rolled up, putting all in for the team. He ain’t pretty to watch but he got though a power of good work today.
Simon – didn’t stop running from go to whoa. Must have been a hell of a cross-country runner at school. Fiercely competitive and thoroughly deserved his goal.
Ibini-Isei – a rising star. Doesn’t always take the right decision but is impressively confident on the ball, good enough and quick enough to go past defenders. Unselfish for the team but selfish enough to create his own opportunities. And he knows where the goal lies.
Hearfield. Very impressed by the work of this player. Looks up for it as soon as he comes on, is quick, skilful and intelligent. He will be pressuring McGlinchey and Bojic for a starting spot and if he gets it he will be hard to shift.
MoM – Bernie but close run with Simon, McBreen and Griffiths

I'd say Matty was my MOM today, I think we are underestimating how much easier it makes Bernie's role when he is partnered with a striker who is as physical as Matty and works as tirelessly as he does, means that Matty draws the best defender and sometimes a covering defender or two.

Bernie was still brilliant, and played his role in the partnership well, we need someone exactly like that to partner Simon. But I think behind Wilko, Simon would perhaps be the most devastating loss if he got injured.

Thanks for the report missed most of the game .... but I like the turn of phase you used """working back to form""" weeMac, Olly, Griffiths & Rose all fit this... I think when Musty regains fitness he will create more space for them to work in...McBreen is filling in very well to the number 10 roll ...

Just a tho ... seems a lot like our start last year real scratchy in the beginning of the season and we build from there...

Pedj is the new Kwassie.
Hearfield looked good when he came on.If he keeps it up Kwassie wont get his contract renewed.

I think it would have been good to have Kwassie on in the first half to take advantage of the couple of low crosses that went untouched or missed across the Wellington goal mouth.

I actually like the two of them together. They both chase defenders with the ball. Matty would do this, but tire of it quickly when the other striker didn't. With Bernie there he keeps it going all game!!

This.

Call me a hard task master but it cheeses me off that we are slow to start the season and usually slow to start our games. Quite frankly it is not good enough and a poor excuse. The team had how many months to get things right prior to the start of the season?

I don't see the same problem with Brisbane. Geez it feels better when you vent your spleen!

It depends whether Kwassie was on (10%) or off (90%) of his game.
The Kwassie of late last season may have scored, the Kwassie going around this season is more likely to cause a goal rather than score one.(Maybe he`s burnt out from going to China)

I'd prefer the team to start slowly rather than to start well and drop off at the business end of the season.

Didn't get back from the bush in time to watch the game so have only seen the highlights. what impressed me from highlights reel was Simon ibeni combination...looks like we finally have a strike partnership to write home about.
I tipped us to win and think we are coming back into form. It looks like Pelle and Porter won't be back in the side in a hurry which is probably a blessing.
Bring on the victory....I can't wait.

Stuffed a few good chances in front of goal... would be good to see us bury those chances and start crushing teams. I think it's a problem we've had going all the way back to season 1, we've never really been deadly in front of goal. Although, Bernie seems to know where the back of the net is and is keen to take a shot.

I think you are missing the point. The execution, intensity and general level of play are not good enough. Consider Roar who have not missed a beat since ending last season and starting this season and you get my point. Too many times the players appear lethagic at the start of a game.

While this is our best combination at present and Bernie is an exciting prospect he still has a long way to go.
He needs to work on holding possession, he can be pushed off the ball far too easily. He can also spend too long on the ball when he just needs to get a shot away.
He has a good shot and pace so there is no reason for him not to develop into a top line striker, especially as he has an ex international striker to guide him.

Watching him develop will be a pleasure.

For those into torrents, all HAL games are available from acrossthetasman.com to download after the match. Good quality videos and usually just over 1 GB in size. You'll need to register to access the forum where the games are.
just watching the game now through torrents...quality very good and much better than trying to watch via live streaming (unless there is a Sopcast link). I'll use this for all future games I can't see live. thanks Marquee
