BLUFFER’S GUIDE

The Mariners and Roar staged second-half comebacks to earn a point in Round 1 but that endeavour counted for little last weekend with both sides suffering 4-0 defeats.

Paul Okon and John Aloisi were both quick to point out that the scoreboard was not a true reflection of their contests but they’ll be eager nonetheless to turn the page on these results.

Despite only being two rounds into the new season it’s evident Central Coast have vastly changed their style under Okon.

The Mariners boast the highest possession rate of any team in the competition but have been letting themselves down with some schoolboy errors at the back.

This is their only home game over the first five rounds so no doubt they’ll be eager to put in a strong performance for the Central Coast faithful.

Having built Suncorp into a fortress Brisbane need to find a way to win on the road if they’re to again be challenging for silverware this season.

They only claimed three points twice on their travels last season and worryingly have conceded nine goals across their last two away matches.

No doubt they’ll be boosted by the return of skipper Matt McKay and the knowledge that they’ve had the Mariners’ measure in recent times.

OPTA DATA

  • Brisbane Roar have won five straight matches versus Central Coast Mariners.
  • Central Coast Mariners find themselves on a 12 game winless streak (D2 L10).
  • Mariners (65%) and Roar (63.8%) both recorded a much higher share of possession last weekend in their respective games, yet they both succumbed to 4-0 defeats.
ROUTE TO GOAL

The Mariners will be buoyed by the return of Portuguese flyer Fabio Ferreira and with speedsters Blake Powell, Connor Pain and Trent Buhagiar also among their midfield ranks it's a front five that's capable and pacey.

Frontman Roy O’Donovan will again be key, with the Irish central striker banking a double in Round 1 and a real focal point for Okon's rejigged attacking third.

Can the Mariners expose Roar's attacking full backs Brown and Hingert? The battle down the flanks will be key.

For Roar, Tommy Oar came close to netting his first goal on his return to Roar last weekend, while former Socceroo Brett Holman and last season’s NAB young footballer of the year Jamie Maclaren both are capable of hurting the Mariners defence.

Expect goals in Gosford.

WHO’S BEEN IN THE SPOTLIGHT THIS WEEK?

Scott Galloway. The 21-year-old defender signed with the Mariners this week after being released by Melbourne Victory and could find himself thrust straight into Paul Okon's squad.

Hard on Trent, but I really like having him and Bingham to be able to come off the bench - lot more depth than past two games.

I hope that is the last we see of neil, he's had a horrible half. Fatty has actually been pretty good, and the front 4 got off to a great start, then they stopped finding each other on their runs. I think we have been the better team for most of th half, but our back 4 is still very scary.

Agreed there, Neill doesn't appear to managing well today (or either of the last two weeks).

Wouldn't mind Galloway coming on at HT, and Trent replacing Fabio at 65'

Then Bingham on for Powell or O'Donovan in the last ten?

Hook Neill now and we should go onto win this. He's been truly awful. Looks scared - second guessing.... cost us a goal again and nearly everything has gone through his side.

Positive - we really do look like the better team and have played some very good gootball. Tav is a footballers footballer. Pleasure to watch. Pass accuracy and communication needs to improve - but we do look like a positive work in progress.

Also think Mcgong has been excellent so far and Faty playing well also, throw Galloway on for Neill and we just may have a half decent defence this year.

Oh and the ref is an absolute ass clown again. A new generation of incompetent refereeing coming through the ranks... how exciting.

Hard done by to be down at half time.

Shit, I think that's very true. He did show promise in attack 2.5 years ago, but is just not a defender. Modern game - frequently convert average wingers into defenders and then wonder why they're defensively suspect.

So right about Neill, I have my heart in my mouth each time he is anywhere near the ball. Other that we look pretty good, if anything just a bit slow and indecisive, but that will come

Ferreira in my opinion would rather beat a player one on one than put his team in an advantageous position. I've seen him three times now go for the skin when a simple cross was on.

Definitely his nature... just wants to run at players. Pros and cons... but I think he's been good and has also defended well
Made some good covering runs and couple of tackles even.

I think our biggest concern today has been how slow the ball movement has been from Tavares. Not only slow but some really poor choices too. We miss a creative influence in the middle. If we had one we'd be making chances today. We've had enough ball to win 3 games today just not doing anything dangerous with it.
