Things have changed a lot over the years, but one thing has remained constant and that is our love of the Mariners. People come and go, some like to post a lot and others just like to read. It's up to you how you participate in the community!

If posting is not your thing, you can interact in other ways, including voting on polls, and unlock options only available to community members.

ccmfans.net is not only for Mariners fans either. Most of us are bonded by our support for the Mariners, but if you are a fan of another club (except the Scum, come on, we need some standards), feel free to join and get into some banter.

It needs to be bigger...plan for the future people!! Don't do State and Federal Gocernment and plan for now, or 2 years ahead, plan for 15 years...thats how old the J-League is...look at where their crowds are at.
Yes but how big do you really think CCM will be in 20 or 30 years ?

IMO we will always be a small club, quite possibly fighting relegation on a regular basis.

Apart from the odd game we won't ever have a need for a bigger stadium imo.

So the only club in Australia with plans for their own academy to raise youngsters for their team and to farm out is going to always be a small club?

The only team with future plans which resemble that of bigger clubs in Europe will always be a small club?

I doubt that very much.

We will never be huge, but there is no reason other than our areas population that we would always be a small club. And that will grow consistently over the next 10 - 20 years.

So glad your not running our club, no foresight or dream in you my freind.
You misunderstand what I'm getting at.

I think we'll be a well organised and run club just not huge in terms of crowd numbers even allowing for the fact that it's a growing area.

There are plenty of well established clubs around the world who play in smaller stadiums to crowds under 20,000 every week.

The reason I said what I did in regards to fighting relegation etc is I don't believe we will have a salary cap for ever.Sooner or later Melbourne or Sydney will challenge it and if it goes to court they'll win.If that ever happens we will be a small club compared to the city clubs without doubt.

In respect to salary cap restrictions, yes i agree, if it is ever removed in our current state of existence we would be perenial cellar dwellars.

Why would Sydney and Melbourne win a court ruling over salary cap restrictions. It is something that is looked upon in favour by ruling bodies from certian parts of the world. It is also something that Australia is highly exposed to. There are not many sports here in Australia without one.

It would be an interesting case thats for sure.

It's true most sports in Australia have a salary cap.

But football is different as it's a genuine world game and having that cap restricts clubs like Melbourne, for example, from improving beyond a certain level. All Australian clubs competing in the AFC champions league are up against clubs who have no salary cap at all.

The AFL only gets away with having a cap(and a draft) because there is no where else for the players to go.

Personally I think we will always need a cap to prevent the league becoming like Scotland for example.I just happen to think the bigger clubs will get greedy and challenge it eventually.

But the case, if it occurs, will not be tried in Asia or in Europe. It will be tried in Australia. The first piece of evidence against will be, "well how did Adelaide do so well". Ok there was a massive gulf in class shown in the final, but steps to prevent that scenario from occuring again, such as the extended squads for ACL, have already occured. What merrit is there in playing 20 - 30 games against lowly opposition to gain qualification to ACL, and then play Gamba Osaka, who have quality opposition, and a strong team.

IMO caps prevent a monoply on skill from any one club such as in Europe and Asia, and promote the use of untried young aussie players with your more expensive (but in some cases not more skilled) and more experienced Australians and imports.

I agree that the club with its best interests at heart, and the ability to spend big, would want the abolishment of such caps. Buts whats the use of playing in a comp against no one? Australia's sporting supporters have always been fickle in such that when their winning,  they actively support. If there is no active support, then clubs wither and die. Our game could not survive with a competition without salary cap and there is a lot of history to support that fact in other codes and sports. If it did survive it would be at a level akin to the NBL (hello rebeca wilson) and no one wants that at all.

Mind you this is all at a local level, because without the local league, there is no ACL.
