If posting is not your thing, you can interact in other ways, including voting on polls, and unlock options only available to community members.

ccmfans.net is not only for Mariners fans either. Most of us are bonded by our support for the Mariners, but if you are a fan of another club (except the Scum, come on, we need some standards), feel free to join and get into some banter.

The regular season is a right off. Use the remaining league games to try and rebuild the team with the new players and starting the promising youth, try things from the training ground and focus on ACL and finals.

Win 2-3 games in the ACL and it's out of the group, win 2-3 games in the finals and that's championship. The biggest comfort is EVERY team this season has had bad patches and are beatable

Next season we will be much stronger, won't be loosing players and won't have ACL to deal with so a shoe in for the double!

But this is the dooms day thread so...

Finish 4th, make the grand final and loose to Brisbane!
Get creamed by the j-league team by 5 at home on a cold night with 3k in the stands and have to deal with everyone's stick as wanderers "rotation policy" and 3-4 FFA funded ACL only players make it out of the group stage with huge crowds and media attention

How are we going to be stronger?

nah I reckon five players other teams would be willing to buy:
*Roux
*Griffiths
*Duke (if we can give him some form)
*Tom Slater
*maybe some other bloke...

Our problem is what we do in possession.

We're playing out poorly, which means we're under pressure sooner and we cough up possession more often.

When we're playing well, we play out very effectively and with little risk. This means that our fullbacks can press on aggressively without needing to worry too much that they're going to be caught out of position.

At the moment they can't be confident of that, so both our fullbacks are out of sorts because the whole shape isn't working. This is all down to having none of the back three that we had last year - Ryan, Zwaanswijk and Sainsbury. Then going forward we've lost McBreen and McGlinchey, so our attack isn't as natural and automatic as it was. Losing one would take some adjustment, losing two took quite a bit of adjustment, now we've lost all three in the backline, plus two key attackers and Bozanic as well, so we're out of shape all over the place.

The changes didn't happen all at once, so it's not like we had a chance to build it all back up through a preseason. We're going to need to settle on some combinations and have them work their way into playing our system. As we've seen from Adelaide's trials and tribulations earlier this season, this can take a while and it will cost us points. But it's worth doing and doing properly, because when it sticks* we'll be back to our usual selves.

* Assuming our players are capable of playing the Mariners way; and if they aren't questions need to be asked of the people that signed them - mostly Arnie!

Tom Slater??? ordinary at best.
I think Rose was exposed due to our tactical ineptness.

Rose has quite a few flaws defensively.......but when I watch him play he looks like our best and most experienced defender....which is worrying.

This, we've lost a lot of quality, but probably more importantly we lost a bunch of combinations and understandings that were 2-3 years in the making

So true! He was arguably the weakest link in the leagues best defence last season, now he is the strongest link in a defence desperately sandbagging the oncoming flood waters. No wonder he isn't looking like the deadly weapon going forward

I thought he made the Australian training squad and then the All Stars?

Don't get me wrong, he was the best left back in the league. He is a great defender and was a weapon going forward... But sainsbury, big patty and even bojic with his goal line clearances were all IMHO better at defending

I know this is the panic thread but just wanted to point out that only 3 teams has lost less games than us. We have lost 7 with Brisbane and Melbourne on 6, wanderers with 4

Worst ever season 09-10 we went 7W 9D 11L
This season with 7 rounds to go we're 7W 6D 7L

The wagon is wobbly, but the wheels haven't fallen off entirely... (Yet)

Our CBs are poor - we've hadn't found anyone good to pair with Sainsbury, now unsurprisingly we can't find a pair out of the people not good enough to be 2nd best...

We're missing any sense of attacking threat to go with our defensive disorganisation, we can't play out, and our transitions are terrible. We're a rabble, in need of a preseason.

From the grand final side we've lost our keeper in Ryan, both centre backs in Zwaanswijk and Sainsbury, one DM/LM in Bozanic, our RM in McGlinchey, and a ST/AM in McBreen.

We're in need of a proper rebuild, and we're not going to get it until next season. If we can avoid abject embarrassment between now and then, great. We're not going to win much between now and then. We still need to play to win too, because there aren't that many good sides in the A-League this year so we're still going to jag some things.
