NYE Mariners v Glory

I reckon the boys will step up and win this, my only concern is the number of young players vs the heavy bullying tactics of Perth. It's gonna be a real test.

Hail CCM!

. happy with that result considering the circumstances

. still not happy about the earlier kick-offs ... any heat in the day and the spectacle is usually ruined

. which is what always happens when we get a big crowd

. once bernie came on we started to play football ... hopefully that is what the part-timers remember

Happy with a win but I didn't enjoy the game one iota. First half was abysmal! Pelle... A for effort, but he just doesn't fit in with what's going on around him. I was very worried about our front half. Kwas and Pelle didn't fill me with confidence... and that's putting it politely. Our centre defenders, Chesty Bond and Tesco... now they make me feel optimistic about the future. Get your defence right first! That's Arnie's motto, so the future is looking bright.

Anyway, my MoM was Ryan. Why? Not for the saves he made, but purely for his distribution. ALL of his kicks and throws hit their targets... it was beautiful to watch. I made a mental note to take notice because this could be the last time I see him live.

The fireworks post-game were fantastic! Well done to the Mayor of Gosford ;). As a footnote, I was sitting next to Strebre Delovski watching the fireworks and his kids were wearing Mariners gear . I don't know if they are fans or whether he was just wanting to blend in with the crowd and enjoy the show.

I'm not going to bag Kwas - he tried hard - but just doesn't have the physical presence to play the lone striker role. Macca does it well and Duke also has that bit of mongrel. If we stay with the current system he will need to play on the wings.

Mariners take the Glory

Only one team tried to win this game; only one team deserved the three points. Matches between Perth and the Mariners are tense affairs; they are rarely goal-fests. Visiting Bluetongue – a wonderful crowd on the night – Perth will play well for about thirty minutes and then they will retreat further into their negative shell. The Mariners don’t like to take risks, especially early in the game, and will take time to warm up but will come on strong at the end. And that is the way this game played out.

Arnie surprised all we armchair experts by starting the forgotten Adrian Pellegrino in place of the suspended Tommy Rogic with Michael McGlinchey, acting captain, in his usual wide spot in midfield. Up front was the never forgotten Adam Kwasnik and Ollie Bozanic took on the Hutch role alongside Montgomery.

Perth had one worthwhile chance in the whole 90 minutes – a great chance for Shane Smeltz which he horribly butchered. In the first half the Mariners had little more to show for it – a Bojic cross that almost found Kwasnik but Danny Vukovic was brave and quick enough to deal with it and then in the last minute a super sharp break down the left but again Vukovic thwarted Kwasnik from Rose’s cross.

That late attack at the end of the first half was the Mariners’ cue for the start to the second. They turned the ignition, kicked into gear, and raised the tempo significantly. Kwasnik netted but was rightly given off-side; McGlinchey broke through on the left but couldn’t find a team mate. Bojic was making inroads on the right and Bozanic was supporting Rose on the left. Arnie made the no-brainer switch when he moved McGlinchey to the Rogic role and brought Ibini on out wide for Pellegrino who had struggled throughout to cope with the step up from the NYL. McGlinchey responded with a direct run at the heart of the Perth defence and Van den Brink got a deserved yellow for bringing him down. Bojic placed the free kick into the Yellow Army behind the goal.

Kwasnik looked in the mood, his unorthodox style unsettling the Perth defenders especially Van den Brink. Bernie’s pace gave them no respite on the right and when Bozanic’s cross found him he coolly chipped the ball past Vukovic to give the Mariners the lead. Hand ball the commentators said but who cares? The Mariners deserved the lead. Sainsbury almost made it two with a strong header but it went wide with Vukovic nowhere. Bojic surged forward, found Kwasnik and went for the return which never came; Bojic lifted his arms wide in frustration.

Van den Brink got a second yellow with a cynical late slide on Mile Sterjovski. From the free kick Sterjovski almost scored after Vukovic fumbled. Bernie got greedy and belted the ball well over after cutting in from the right. Perth did nothing. Duke came on and gave us a reminder of Matt Simon’s hustling to the cheers of the crowd. Brent Griffiths made a rare appearance as sub for the exhausted Bozanic.

It wasn’t pretty, it was never going to be, but the Mariners will be relieved to have got back to winning ways. It would be nice if for once in front of a bumper NYE crowd the Mariners would really turn it on!

In a very even performance it is difficult to pick out one player but I will give the MoM to Ollie Bozanic who got through a power of work to stake a claim for a permanent place in the team while i thought Kwassie gave notice that he too is right in the mix.

That second half long flat kick straight to Mitchell Duke was a gem...and i always knew there was something I liked about Delovski!

how on earth did Arnie take so long before he hooked Pellers? truly awful and the comp has clearly passed him by.

we were dreadful but glory were worse.

Dukey, like a nasty Matty Simon with pace, potential cult hero there. Kwas, massive shift, just bleeds yellow and blue.

Blew my mind FFC. When he got Bernie and Duke au at 34 to go for a warm up, I was hoping this might signal at least a half time change. Truly awful performance. I genuinely felt sorry for him. But the later hook, I put it down to Arnie being a class act... Gave him till 52. Not embarrassing for a player, but early enough to do what DESPERATELY needed to be done. The comp has indeed passed him by. Can't believe Caceres would not have been a better option.

First half was dour. But the main thing is we won. With key players out. That makes it a great win and great for morale.
Anderson was my MOM. Imperious. Sainsbury was excellent. Again.
Rosey, a more conseravtive, but much better game. Nice to see Matty also looking more solid again.
Weemac. Great captains knock.
Having Pedj back was also telling. Good solid game. (Side note, we ever lose him, I want Risdon)
Duke impresses me no end. And with more minutes goals will surely follow. And to be fair, all of our youth players show a lot of promise. I love watching Australian youth. For me watching the rise of Tommy, is greater than watching the fall of Del Piero...Emerton...Kewell..Fowler... etc etc...

WeeMac stood out for me. Never stopped working.

Bernie - told you he was hungry ;)
Still prefer to see him back in the centre though.

One of those games where you pocket the 3 points and move on.

Perth is one of the teams I hate to watch.
They just seem to bog the play down with rarely any excitement.
The starting line-up was a bit of a surprise.
Pellers (although by all reports he is a great guy) just seemed to have no respect from the Glory as they continually hammered him.I felt sorry for him when he was taken off ,the crowd gave one of it`s loudest cheers, which I hope was more for Bernie but I doubt it.
Anderson I thought was fantastic throughout & was easily MOM.
Tesco another solid performance. His reputation is growing each week.
Monty though was the unsung hero. He defended well & his vision to push the ball forward, just prior to the goal was superb.

The crowd also was superb, even though the eastern stand cooked.

a beautiful, ugly win. anderson the colossus of blue tongue and Sainsbury the time bandit ."he's always there 5 minutes before the trouble." were superb.
sterjo was all class ,maybe only just shaded by wee mac as Mom.
ollie at Dm, has laid down a challenge to hutch ,just quietly.
kwasie and pelli ,enough said by others.
burnie, you star
on ryan,as one punter said, the kick to duke in the 91 minute, i think .was a thing of beauty .
it's the sort of thing that had to be seen from my position the appreciate just how good it was, wow.
honorable mention to monty, pedj and rose.

onto the drive by's .time to give popovic a lesson in ugly.

Very happy with the 3 points, unhappy with the football displayed.I believe PG contributed to the final result. They were bad. They weren't even physical which is their trademark. All our players gave 100% but as a team we were boring.First half performance was poor and due to PG incredible goal miss it finished nil all. All that was needed was a bit of an improvement, not much to beat this PG side and it happened when Birnie was introduced. We scored and game over.PG was never going to equalize as they just didn't show up on the day to play or to be physical. Imo, Kwas can't be in the starting line up, he even struggles when playing in the nyl. In the absence of McBreen, Duke or Birnie are better options to start in the sole striker position.I think that young Caceres should start (or at least be on the bench) as AM. He's a much better option than Pelle. Ryan and the back four performed well. They were never under intense pressure. It's a relief to see that if Dutchy isn't available Zac can do the job. Trent ( I said it when he was playing in the youth) will be the best central defender in the league. For the game against the wsw GA needs to think deeply about the starting line up. I don't believe that wsw will make it as easy as PG did. HAPPY NEW YEAR to all mariners supporters!!

Can't agree with this. Kwas is not a lone striker - but either is Bernie. In the current system you need either Macca or Duke at the pointy end. Kwas can still do a job out wide or as part of a front two.

Fully agree he is not a target man, but if a ball is played into the box he will be the one in position to take advantage of it. He scores some spectacular goals but mostly tap ins that look easy but only because he is in the right place at the right time.
Many here only seem to see his clumsiness when he gets isolated and runs out of options.
He still has a lot to offer.
