O'Grady, Owens added to squad

CC Express Friday, January 16, 2009

Emma Herd:

Off contract Central Coast Mariners Paul O'Grady and greg owens have been named in an extended squad for tomorrow night's A-League clash against Melbournwe Victory at telstra Dome.

They come into the squad which will be without Matthew Osman, who suffered a hip flexor injury in Saturday's 4-3 loss to Queensland

Should Owens play it would be his FIRST A-League match of the season, while O'Grady has played in five.

Mariners coach Lawrie McKinna said his side watched a DVD of Saturday's loss during the week and were determined to make amends. "They were disappointed with the way the goals were conceded," he said.

"We didn't defend well as a team; everyone contributed to the goals."

With Melbourne also coming off a loss, both sides have plenty to play for.

The Mariners are out to secure their berth in the finals, while the Victory have their eyes on a spot in the the top two.

Meanwhile, the Mariners National Youth League side will take on Melbourne tommorrow at Epping Soccer Stadium, Melbourne.

The last match-up between the sides was a 1-1 draw but the Victory will be out to continue its hot recent form with an unbeaten run of four matches.

Stand corrected on assumption Ossie might play.

Owens looks more than certain to play with this news of Ossie's injury, albeit from the bench as needed.

Interesting naming O'Grady, makes me think Heff is still not 100% from flu or won't last the full 90min.

Ossie started last week at LDM and did alright, No Ossie means possibly Hutch moving over to LDM  with Porter starting at RDM, meaning that Clarkey will also start at RB.

From the players Lawrie has named with 1 to be omitted:

Central Coast Mariners Squad

2. Andre Gumprecht, 4. Pedj Bojic, 5. Bradley Porter, 7. John Hutchinson, 8. Dean Heffernan, 9. Nik Mrdja, 10. Adrian Caceres, 11. Dylan Macallister, 12. Greg Owens, 13. Paul OGrady, 15. Andrew Clark, 18. Alex Wilkinson, 19. Matt Simon, 20. Danny Vukovic (gk), 22. Sasho Petrovski, 30. Andrew Redmayne (gk) *one to be omitted

I'd shape up like this:
                                        (Redders)
                                          Vuka

    (Chicken, Wilko)                              (O'Grady)                (Pedj)
------ Clarkey ---------- Wilko -------- Pedj ------------ Heff ------

                (Gumps, Owens)                                (Gumps)
--------------- Chicken ------------------------ Hutch -------------

(Gumps, Nik, Owens)                  (Owens)                          (Nik, Owens)
--- Simon ------------------- Caceras ------------------- Sasho ---

                                          (Simon, Nik)
------------------------------- DMac ------------------------------

Bench: Gumps, Mrdja, Owens & Redders......remembering (O'Grady, Heff, Sash, Mrdja or Owens to be omitted)

I'd say you're right if he persists with that shape. It looked OK while Ossie was on but the flanks are quite exposed. With Melbourne's movement through midfield, we need to pack that area.

Maybe he'll sacrifice a striker and look at a diamond -

Danny

Clarky Wilko Pedj Heff
            Hutch
  Porter        Gumps
          Caceres
      Simon  Dmac

True, Melb move through he midfield well, or we could have:

back 3 of Clarkey, Wilko & Pedj and either a 5 mid/2 striker OR 4 mid/3 striker which could be a hand full for Melb's defence, which i rate

I've got a really good feeling about this game. I believe this will be a smash 'n' grab. Don't forget that Adelaide COULD NOT score against the Roar the other night and we put 3 passed them. If our defensive issues are fixed, we can knock them off.

I think we have to go for it with 3 strikers and hope to snatch the points with the odd goal in 3,5 or 7!

Our defence is just too slow to keep Archie out so imo we'll have to try and out score them!

Why would our defensive issues suddenly be fixed? We've let 3 in against Sydney twice this season and Adl A another 3 then 4 on Saturday!

ATTACK, ATTACK, ATTACK, ATTACK, ATTACK as they say on The Kop

Cannot wait for tomorrow. I have this feeling that Matt Simon is going to put on a very special display - one that will make us so proud to be CCM fans. If we have a hope of outscoring the apparently unstoppable Archie T., then we need Matt Simon to be on song. C'mon Matty, it's time to shine!

After all, "attack is the best form of defense" ;) Or is it "defense is the best form of attack"? Either way both are good.

Rowdy, if Lawrie persists with that formation then I agree that will probably be the line up, although Nik did ok last week he may have done enough to keep his starting spot.

Personally I think Porter was caught out of position a few times when he moved into the middle, he's looked much better on the right and has provided a fair few assists due to his good crossing.  He may have the body like an ancient greek sculpture but he needs to toughen up to play that holding role, opposition midfielders would look at him because of his size/experience and not be intimidated at all.  Mile was so good in that role because that's 1 asset he did have, a very tough position to fill for ACL and next season.

It almost hurts me to say this but I think it's time we gave Gumps a role in the middle with Hutch, his experience could prove invaluable in our quest at securing a finals spot, whether Lawrie wants him in that role or as an impact off the bench that's his decision, but I think having someone like him in there may be better for us.

--------------Danny
Porter-----Wilko----Pedj-----Heff
-------Gumps------Hutch
Simon-------Caceres------Nik
------------Macca

Bench - Clarke, Sash, Stringers/Owens and Redders

would love to see a 3-4-3 formation but I don't know if we have the back line for it.

Could we possibly try to defend a little deeper against MV this time please?

I'll take some actual defending this time.

I feel sick with nerves about this match as beating Melbourne down there is always a hard task and with Adelaide not winning on Wed night only gives them more fire power. Will be watching from home here in Sydney after work  :tv: with a cold one in hand.

Have a great time for those going down there - and Meghan, please BEHAVE!

I think a flat 442 formation is the way to go

            Danny
Clarkey Wilko Pedj Heff
Porter Gump Hutch A.C
      Simon  Nik

Bench. Owens, Macca, Sash

Hopefully this formation could entice us to keep possession for longer periods. You could tinker with the mid field all day and Porter will prob play RB but its just a thought. I'm not too sure that having the DM's will work without Jedi. The diamond midfield was perfectly suited his style of play and now that he's gone I fell LM needs to look a other options.

D-Mac picked up ankle injury at training yesterday.  Should be okay though.

It's a six-pointer and with Adelaide United failing to beat Queensland, much more is at stake now. Melbourne have shown they can roll teams comfortably at home, but Queensland and Sydney have won down there so they can be beaten.
