Mariners v Roar

Playing Brisbane at home is like St George playing the Raiders anywhere in the NRL- we're destined to never beat them.

A spirited effort, when we get the full squad back I have even more confidence than before that we have more silverware imminent.

Lol at the haters on fb- one less and they're sticking the knife in. I remember the same thing happened to Brisbane when their run ended against Sydney. You know you're doing well when people stick the boot in and write you off as pretenders after one loss, irrespective of the circumstances. Especially the Jest fans- they truly are the Everton of the HAL...

Wasn't impressed by either just think roar took their chances well ...bernie needs to muscle up ..hopefully
Sutton can take a bit of the workload off him ..sainsbury impressed me alot in the five mins or however long he was on ...weemac and pedj were standouts

Very shit first half, better second half but dear god the finishing made me cry. Maybe buying a new striker was a good idea after all. And Matt Ryan really does save our bacon more often than not. Christ I hope he doesnt get hurt playing for the Olyroo's. Pasfield trys but he's not up to scratch.

Chris Griffiths-Jones pulled off quite a feat - I regard him more stupid and one sided than Matt Breeze. Never seen such a crap performance.

Also Berisha wins "Biggest sook in the league" for me. Never have seen anything that came close to that pathetic act.

I think the "week off" hurt us more/ The good news is we seemed to be much better as the game wore on and then dominated. I think this loss will be a bump in the road in the scheme of things. But god we need Matty Ryan back.

+1

i to thought Pellegrino went alright too.
as said by someone else ,before. weemac was a one man band.
while our midfield is living the life in uzbekistan. if musialik is fit it's time to have a look.

My two bobs worth. Roar were definitely the better team and deserved their win, could have been by more but if we took our chances we could have had another get out of gaol scenario. Not overly disappointed considering the changes that had to be made.

I was disappointed with the fickle supporters in the Eastern stand booing when the ball was played back, no team presses like Brisbane and it is better to play back constructively and hold possession rather than lump it forward and hope, especially when the conditions were so stifling. Those booing have forgotten the Noel Spencer days.

Ref was ordinary and inconsistent.

Kwas is a bench player for mine and has an impact from there. Same for Hearfield. Thought McBreen was good. Bernie looked like he had run out of puff early in the second half. Sainsbury looked composed and assertive when he came on.

Berisha is a tool but the way he pressed our back four in that heat was impressive.

Berisha is a tool and now everyone can see why even the lower divisions in germany wouldnt touch him.Bernie is crap, too easy to knock off the ball!

Wombat

Right......i'm tipping he's not the only Tool!

He is the top scorer in HAL and just helped defeat us...........and Bernie is crap.

Get a grip Mario and post something worthwhile or sensible.

Bojic gave the ball away seven times in the first half...
Pellegrino made our two best passes of the game...

Bojic always gives the ball away and always crosses to the corner flag.....however his workrate was superb and I thought he had a good game (and not many did).

I would be interested to hear your opinions on our performance and the individual players efforts (because you are normally pretty good).

I thought we would lose when i saw our line up and sadly it played out like that.

We were dross in the first half and much improved in the second.

We have not played one decent game since Simon left so Sutton needs to be drafted in ASAP.

Pasfield 5.5. Looked good at everything apart from actually saving the ball.
Bojic 7. Good effort. One of our best
Wilko 6.5. OK performance.
Dutchy 6. Average defensively but still good on the ball
Rose 6. Not very impressive.
Pelligrino 6. Not good enough to play for the Mariners.
Griffo. 6.5. OK
McBreen 7. Worked very hard.
Wee Mac 7.5. The only bloke switched on tonight apart from Bojic.
Bernie 6. Insipid but again given NO support.
Hearfield 6. Might as well play Porter up front. Decent utility player but front line striker.....look at his finishing on his two decent chances.

Subs:

Kwassie 6.5. Should have started.
Rojic 6. Gets into good positions and one for next year.
Siansbury 6.5 This kid is starting to grow on me. Shows decent potential.

We missed our trio hugely and still missing a strike partner for Bernie.
Kwasnik should have started.
We were outplayed by Brissy tonight but still played with heart and still are a decent team but we were let down by team selection and missing four of our best players (i'll include Simon it that until he is replaced by a decent starting player).

MOM
3 pts WeeMac
2pt Bojic
1pt McBreen

Thought you were a bit hard on some and easy on others with your points Wombat.
Pasfield 5.5 Too much couldn't kick the ball either.
Dutchy 6.0 Generous, poorest match he has had for us. looked his age.
Rose 6.0 A bit tough, thought he was still improving. Made himself available often but was not given the ball.
Mcbreen 7.0 Generous. Give him 10 for heart, but after giving him wraps as a number 10 I now believe he is not the answer.
Wee Mac 7.5 Very generous, works hard but needs to get his head up and provide.
Rojic 6 Generous. Ball dished up to him on a plate twice and still could not tap it in.

Apart from those pretty spot on.

I spent a lot of time in the 2nd half trying to watch our movement off the ball. Bernie, Kwassy, Rose and Bojic made plenty of great runs off the ball but never received it, or got it too late after having to check and allowing the defense to catch up.

Our midfield is just not providing!!

We also lack players passing, moving and lookig for the return, ie "one twos".

Roar made us look old and slow.

Here you Wombat :)
The Mariners have never beaten the Roar at Bluetongue and didn’t look like doing so today. The Roar may be rivals but I still admire the way they play football; they still set the standard in this country. With a mix of good fortune and sheer professionalism they opened the scoring after just five minutes: the good fortune came when Bojic lost his footing to allow Fitzgerald through, his cross was deflected; the professionalism came with two Roar midfielders pouring through the gap with Partaluu claiming the goal. Rostyn Griffiths held his head in acknowledgment – he knew he should have been tracking back. You have to wonder, too, if Ryan might have done better than Pasfield.
If you give the Roar an early lead you are asking for trouble as they are encouraged to play their best football. Former Central Coast NYL player Nick Fitzgerald was having a field day against Bojic, aided by the brilliant Tomas Broich. Broich almost ripped the goalposts out of the ground with a fantastic shot – Ryan wouldn’t have got any nearer than Pasfield for this one. Zwaanswijk was being made to look like a beached Italian cruise liner – his passing was off, he looked clumsy and was fortunate not to concede a penalty against the difficult Berisha. Brisbane’s second goal came with Murdocca’s quick feet leaving Zwaanswijk flat-footed; he fed Berisha who still had work to do but Rose didn’t make him work hard enough.
The Mariners though, weren’t out of it. Pellegrino played a marvellous curving forty metre to Bernie out on the right – his cross was perfectly weighted but Hearfield, with all the time to direct the header, failed to even test Theoklitos. Perhaps the Brisbane stopper wanted to be tested: he reprised his ‘play out from the back’ routine and found McBreen who abjectedly failed to control the ball – Amini would not have wasted that opportunity! And then Bojic, despite finding Fitzgerald a handful, came bursting back with an absolutely marvellous barnstorming run which spread-eagled the Roar’s defence. He fed Hearfield who again took the wrong option – instead of going for goal he should have checked and returned the ball to Bojic who would have been unmarked in front of goal.
Arnie replaced Hearfield with Kwasnik at the start of the second half and the Mariners took the game to the Roar. It is testimony to their dominance that a Roar fan on another forum said the Mariners are the only team he has seen who could force Brisbane back so deep that they were parking the bus. They dominated the possession stats and should have scored – why did Wilko head back across goal instead of trying to score? Pellegrino shot just wide, his last act of the game, to be replaced by Rogic. Bojic cut beautifully inside but couldn’t get the power in the shot.Brisbane could have scored a couple on the break but it would have been mightily unfair on the Mariners. It was a stirring game, full of quality football, and Arnie was quite right not to be downhearted afterwards.

And my view on the players -
Pasfield: we are spoiled by having the genius of Ryan. Comparison are unfair but stark. Ryan has the best feet in the business, Pasfield does not. Ryan is a brilliant shot stopper and outstanding in the air - Pasfield is just not in the same League
Bojic – WYSIWYK – run ragged by Fitzgerald, coughing up possession but, unlike Brad Porter he is completely unfazed, nothing stops him and that run in the first half deserved greater reward.
Rose – struggled for impact – McGlinchey not quick enough to pass the ball to him and Franjic is very quick in defence.
Wilko – struggled early when Brisbane controlled the game but steadied to play a driving role in our second half display.
Patrick – as said, first half, pulled apart by Brisbane (no cover from midfield) but one marvellous tackle on Henrique second half showed his character, and class.
Griffiths – failed to take control and a key reason why Brisbane had the upper hand. He visibly struggles in humid conditions. At his best he gives us so much but today wasn’t one of his best
Pellegrino – struggled early with the adjustment in pace from NYL to first team but produced two top quality passes in the first half. I thought he did OK and was unlucky to be taken off early
McGlinchey – usual full on shift but held on to the ball too long. Looked dangerous with his dribbles but rarely opened the Brisbane defence.
McBreen – an enormous effort; he ain’t pretty, he ain’t clever but he was totally involved throughout. A great example and competitor. Can’t shoot though!
Bernie – has been getting some criticism lately – apparently he is lazy and can’t score – well, I disagree. No doubt has been the most affected by the loss of Matty Simon, but his effort is still there: in the 84th minute he ran back 30 metres to chase down a Brisbane attack. I don’t recall, despite being the most heavily marked player, often illegally, him giving up possession. He skilfully held the ball up and took players on. And if he is given the service he will continue to score but none was forthcoming today.
Hearfield: wrong options throughout; a bench player, an impact sub.
Kwasnik – a poor effort. We needed much more from him today but it just wasn’t there. When we are short of four key players we need Kwas to stand up. He didn’t
Rogic – made little impression – he has beautiful touch in both feet but is easily muscled out of possession. Needs a couple of years in the A League to help him develop – extend that 5 month contract! Don’t go overseas and drown in mediocrity!
Sainsbury – loved his cameo – first touch, a header under pressure deliberately guided to a team mate – straight from the Patrick school of football. Really loved his show of anger at the yellow card. This boy is growing on me.

MoM- McBreen for his old fashioned commitment.

And finally, a couple of points -
1. We will be so much better when Ryan, Amini and Bozanic are back; yes we have good depth but I don't see Brisbane making the improvement we will make come Finals time.
2. What a good player Tomas Broich is!
3. Well done to our former NYL player Nick Fitzgerald. NYL watchers always knew he was good but we couldn't match what Brisbane offered him at the time
4. What a good bloke Arnie is - praised his playera afterwards, told them to be proud of what they have achieved.

Some great comments and incites. You should post your comments each game.

BTW who got 2 and 1pts in your MOM award?

hard to pick 2 and 1 because it was pretty even but I'll go for
2. McGlinchey - because opposition just can't the ball off him and he never stops working
1. Bojic - because he gives 100%, good or bad, and never hides

BTW Wombat - I am happy to make comment but sometimes can't see the game because I am, sadly, hopefully not for long, resident in the UK - if the 'net feed is ok (I can get the feed at some locations but not at some others) and the hours suit (6.30 am for Brisbane)I am more than happy to throw in my two pence.
And thankyou for your kind comments.

personally I think Mcglinchy's dribbling allows the defence to settle and mariner players to check their runs waiting for the (most times) ball to be turned over and chase a counter attack. Watch and see how many times he and Bojic pass the ball as compared to getting trapped in between players. Now I said that knowing full well the assists and goals they have but I believe it should be better much better.
