D'Appuzzo - just sign him, no farkin about, just buy the kid. How fast is he???

Mac - lovely 1st touch for such a big CF and maybe be target man we have been looking for

Elrich - not impressed (but I do admit to significant bias) the words unfit and show pony spring to mind TBH

McAndrew - Lightning aimed everything at him in the 1st half and without Clarkie/Wilko helping him out, he was in serious trouble. Unfit, over weight and is it me or is he a dead ringer for Carl Williams off underbelly?

As for the 2nd half triallists, the guy at the back looked composed and solid

I was quite impressed with D'Appuzzo, made some fantastic runs and showed a lot of vision. Macca was also pretty solid, his general game play was awesome, great positioning and strength, showed some good first touches, was unlucky to hit the cross bar.

Who was playing on the left in the second half, wearing Gump's shirt?

Pretty much agree with above although Elrich looked dangerous at times and I think he is fitter than he looks, McAndrew seemed a class below the rest including the lightning boys.

Clarky definately match of the match, work rate high covered for other's at times, showed his experience and coolness last night.

The lightning boys were on the end of some dubious challanges and the ref seemed to favour the mariners. !!

Anthony Villazon was the number 6 with Gumps name on his jersey. !!

Trotty seemed to go pretty well he will now be on loan to the lightning, and will then play keeper for the mariners until Danny return's.

I was pretty impressed with Villazon (thanks for the Dwight, thought that's who it was) maybe a little small, but looks strong for his size.

Trotty was good aswell, his general communication seems to have come up in leaps and bounds, and no doubt that clean sheet will send him forward through the pre-season with some confidence!

That was the best I've seen Lightning play all season.  Unfortunately, scoring opportunities were a bit scarce.  Mariners had two good chances, one hit the post, the other curled in from the right hand corner and nearly caught Wardie out at his near post.  He was able to read it well and made the save look easy.

Ehlrich looked strong, and was very vocal towards the assistant referees.  Lawrie will no doubt sort him out on that score 'cos when you start doing that, your own game suffers proportionately.

For all you detractors out there, Trotty had a fantastic game.  All his fans already know he can, and usually does play like this anyway.  His dominance in the penalty box was complete, he anticipated every ball and every bounce that came his way.  He took every cross and high ball.  His distribution was perfect, except for one ball that he kicked to the sideline - Danny can be relied upon to kick 3 or 4 out per game!!  Well done, Trotty.

. agree with some of the other comments here:

.. thought d'apuzzo was good without realising how young he was - quite solid for a youngin. only noticed one error where he missed the ball but then made up ground to retrieve the ball from his opposite number - kinda reminiscent of some other bloke i've seen playing for the mariners in that position

.. clarkey clearly showed he is still up for it

.. was impressed with dylan - can't wait for the acl, he looks skillful enough not to resort to bullying against smaller foe

.. wasn't real impressed by elrich though more so for the filth that was constantly coming from his mouth (at least the 2nd half when he was close). didn't indicate passion so much to me as it did prima dona. with plenty of littlies within earshot it was not the time or place for that sort of thing .... and it was not as if it was a spur/heat of the moment thing it was a constant barrage directed at the ass ref mostly (and his opposite number who for the most part seemed to have his measure). hopefully the rest of the team have learnt from previous dealings with officials

Mariners Held To Lightning Draw

Staff Writer
May 21 2008 09:14

THE Central Coast Mariners were held to a 0-0 draw by NSW Super League counterparts the Central Coast Lightning in their opening pre-season trial match at Pluim Park.
Goals were at a premium for both the Mariners and their opponents, who performed stoically to deny the reigning Hyundai A-League Premiers their fourth straight Central Coast Challenge Cup success.

Despite the unlikely stalemate, the Mariners will have benefited greatly from a tough hit out against a quality opponent, particularly given the encouraging debuts of new recruits Ahmad Elrich and Dylan Macallister and the promising first sightings of a number of National Youth League prospects.

The Mariners were barely a resemblance of the eleven that took to the field against the Newcastle Jets in Februarys Hyundai A-League decider at the Sydney Football Stadium, with John Hutchinson and Alex Wilkinson the only season three regulars remaining at the final whistle.

Mariners Football Manager Lawrie McKinna handed opportunities to seven triallists throughout the course of the evening and all displayed potential in their collective bids to earn a place in the Central Coasts season four senior line up, or inaugural National Youth League representation.

The match was played out in front of a bumper Pluim Park attendance of some 2,000 spectators, each of whom braved the mid-week cold offered by the spiritual home of Central Coast football.

"It was a good hit out, we had six young boys on in the second half and some of them did well, overall it was a good crowd, a good hit out and we can build on that," said Mariners Football Manager Lawrie McKinna.

"Last year we had a lot of games like this, which put us in good shape for the start of the season and the same goes for this year we need to be playing games, weve got a big year ahead of us, so this preparation is very good."

Macallister, who was substituted at the break, was the Mariners standout performer of the opening stanza, laying on a series of delightful touches in the final third and, most notably, striking the crossbar with a diving header midway through the half.

Fellow newcomer Elrich was a busy contributor throughout lasting the full ninety minutes and showcasing some of the quality Mariners Members and supporters can expect to see in abundance in later months.

At the other end of the pitch, central pairing Andrew Clark and Wilkinson were assured, while goalkeeper Matthew Trott was confident when called upon.

Midfield duo John Hutchinson and Bradley Porter loomed most likely to pierce open the Lightnings composed backline, but were ultimately unable to land a telling blow despite both producing overwhelmingly positive performances.

"Dylan Macallister had to come off because of a knock to his right ankle, but he hit the post and their keeper made a couple of good saves he could have easily had three goals in the first half, but he did very well and worked hard," said McKinna.

"Ahmad, I dont think he got enough of the ball, he was open a lot of times and didnt get it, but thats a new player for you he did well, made some nice touches and looked really sharp going forward.

"Overall, I was happy with the performance."

The Mariners continue their pre-season trial match program against reigning NSW State League 1 Champions Spirit FC at Christie Park next Wednesday, 28 May. Kick off is at 7.30pm.

got to meet McKinna...even within 1 metre of him I couldnt understand what he was saying :p
but he is a really nice guy (I informally met him b4)
Just give Elrich time- he showed what he could do 2 years ago- when he made it to EPL + fringe socceroos (starting)- he was bench for Uruguay games!

Made it to the EPL - you are taking the piss surely??

He made 1 appearance in an FAC game against Orient and was booed and abused off the pitch when subbed.

I'm not 100% that he will be a certain starter for us either. Cacaeres, Owens, Jedi and Hutcho would all have to be well ahead of him

The 1st 2-3 crosses that came his way, he left. Fair enough, still injured and 1st game back, but still, its lightning, just walk 2 metres and catch the thing, a better team would be on those left balls and slotting them.

If Lightning had a tall striker (who could head the ball), those crosses would have been a real problem.

I expect every other HAL coach has their tactics for rounds 1-7 already.

Tall target man
Go wide
Bang in crosses
Wait for the inevitable

That shouldnt be too hard even for kosmina - albeit this will require a tactical change from

Win ball at back
hooooooooof to Brosque/new bloke with dodgy knee
Watch ball come back at 100mph
win ball at back
etc

Yes, it was nice to see the Mariners in action again after such a long spell.

By the middle of the second half I was totally confused as to who was on the field. I had been watching the number 6 with interest. Not only was he wearing gumpies shirt but he was also not bad on the ball when the defence closed in. Having said that, many of his passes were ordinary but there was plenty of that from various players during the game. A bit rusty perhaps. Anyway, its nice to put Anthony Villazon's name to the face now.

I thought Trotty had a good game. I heard him marshalling the defence a few times but it seems hard to outdo Wilko in that department - who could possibly consider being a foghorn when he retires. It was a nice save in the second half; and a nice shot for that matter.

I'm a bit pissed I can't make it to Christie Park next week. I work in Sydney, so it would have been easy to drop by, but I've got a business trip starting Thursday grrrrr.
