Might be why Paolo didn’t release Hoole as well. Didn’t want him in Sydney for himself

I've liked Okon since he joined us but still feel he has more to learn especially in decision making during games etc as many have also alluded to on this forum.

Who would want the job after Arnie?

There is only one way for SFC to go after he leaves and that is down, all the trophies over the last few seasons have now set a very high standard for the supporters and more than likely the club as well. Also you would have to think quite a few players might move on if Arnie leaves, I expect Ninko to finish after this season and chase the bigger $$$ in the Mid East irrespective of Arnie leaving or staying, Bobo will be head hunted after this season, Adrian will probably go back to Europe for more $$$ and recognition especially if he makes the Polish NT team. You can't help but think the likes of Brillante, Zullo, O'Neil would all look overseas as they have respect for Arnie much like allot of CCM players did when he was here. I doubt most of the current SFC players would regard Okon anywhere near Arnie and rightly so especially after only being a HAL coach for 2 years. Can not help but think the chair that Arnie will leave behind will be a poison chalice and the next SFC Manager will fail to live up to expectations.

I would still be shocked if Okon after what I've seen would be classed as a worthy replacement for SFC at the end of the season. He would by all accounts have to build a new SFC and you need more than DDS to do that and to win all three trophies. Just making the top 6 isn't enough for SFC any more.

I think if okon goes there it might even benefit us. Gives the chance to try a new approach, and will also negatively impact Sydney imo.

My only worry would be players going with him.

I find this a difficult line to believe. At the very least these talks would be commencing now, given his contract is up in 9 games' time.

If Okon goes and takes our best players with him (DDS especially) I'll be pretty despondent about following another season of heartache and disappointment 2018/19.

He'd be crazy to go though. As stated above - the next coach will likely not do as well as Arnie, be hated by the smurf fans and eventually chucked overboard. Not a good career move really.

The flip side is if he does go - AND we recruit a decent coach - it could be a new horizon of hope.

I'd rather see he extend with us and have a 2nd round of recruitment at a similar quality as last time. Cut off the chaff and bring in more Hiariejs and we'll be a great side

I think we have to be a bit careful here... If Paolo really is putting shit on those who went before him, then he's clearly a bad fit but... That's still a big if, in light of the comments suggesting that he was talking about the knowledge communicated to the players, rather than the knowledge in the club itself...
On the flip-side, I actually still think it would be a shame to see Paolo go at the end of this season... Yes, we're all very despondent and frustrated and we're currently in a very similar position to this time last year but... To me most of that is on the surface.
Looking at how the team performs, most of the time, they're lightyears ahead of where they were last year.. This team would smash the one that played last year and I still firmly believe that with the right Forward, would also smash most of the other teams currently in the league. The improvements are plain for all to see.
Have they lead to the results that we wanted? Clearly not... But consider how many times last year you would have been almost excited about seeing a tie rather than another dreary loss, whereas this year we have seen several ties and been frustrated with the result.
That doesn't mean that Paolo or the team, are doing well enough as such, but there are significant improvements to the playing style and understand and I would be curious to see where those improvements could take us.

On top of that, bear in mind that odds are pretty good that a replacement of Paolo would just mean Rudan, Bleiberg, Kossie or Farina to come back - do you honestly think they would produce anything better?

You make some great points about following Arnie.
However if we had those 3 upfront we’d be awesome.
Paolo also has kids and lives down there. So family wise would be tempting little own for his own ambitions.

Would be very risky for SFC as they struggled badly prior to Arnie getting the right coach. Would be a gamble by them but I agree with better resources he would be better and it would be alot easier to entice players.

SFC = Resources as good or better than any other side. Support of FFA – Scheduling etc. Support of FOX – Player confidence /morale etc. Support of referees, pens, no cards, constant rub of the green etc...

Goes a long way to helping even a mediocre coach do well.


One big upside is that SFC will hopefully lose it's fitness and goal keeping coach as well. REALLY looking forward to seeing them gutted, and Clarkey and Crawley working for the NT.

agree 100% nebakke. I have liked what I've seen for the most part of this season......ignoring the Adelaide and Brisbane games, we have been so far ahead of where we were last year it's a total turn-around. Asdrubal was not a good pick-up...if we'd had a good forward we wouldn't be whinging now about where we were in the league....we'd be whinging about the PROBABILITY of Okon going to Sydney because he's been so successful.
I'm not related to Okon by the way...but I like what he's done in Gosford. I have lots of Sydney friends (even the odd Wanderers and Jets friends) who have all said they like the way the Mariners have been playing. Dare I say it but until last week most of the FourFourTwo comments were along the same lines....so I will be very happy for Okon to stay with us for a few more years yet..

The above posts make the lack of noise about extending Paolo’s contract and his neat evasion of the question on the podcast recently all the more disconcerting imo.

For mine, the bigger worry is why would Okon want to face another one or two seasons operating within our well-publicised financial constraints, if another HAL job came up? I can imagine how ‘pleased’ he was at the sale of Appiah for starters, something he would be unlikely to have to deal with at SFC.

Agree. We’re saying it might be too tough, only way is down, bad for his long term career experiences etc, but honestly, how long can any coaches career be sustained somewhere where he loses too often because the club can’t afford enough quality. Sad, but SFC is a no brainer for him if it’s on the table and likely comes with a pay raise.

What has he actually won or achieved as a coach? Not much imo.
He is doing good work here and should see it through for a season or two. He is still learning how to coach league football.
Move to SFC when he has some experience and proven ability.

Yeah completely agree. But I don’t think that makes it a mistake for him to leave us.

I do think it’s bad for us if he leaves us.

We need to start again. More time, work and money...
