Mariners' Relationship with Sheffield United

Hi Folks,

Just wondering if someone can clarify for me our relationship with Sheffield United FC. My understanding was that it is a partnership. However, after listening to the 28 November 2008 edition of BBC World Service's World Football Podcast (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/podcasts/wswf/) I am not so sure. There was an interview with a spokesman from Sheffield United FC (sorry, forgottten his name) who said that United owns three overseas clubs including the Mariners.

Does anyone know the size of Sheffield United's stake in the Mariners?

Cheers.

From what i have heard they own 2 os clubs. But mariners are not one.

I highly doubt the FFA would allow an a-league club to be owned by another club. As well i believe the FFA have a small chunk still invested in the mariners, and most a0league clubs.

And the most interesting bit was when the spokesman said that SUFC tends to pick up foreign clubs that are in financial difficulty. Surely this wasn't true of the Mariners?

Depends what you define as financial dificulty. In comparison to other a-league clubs no we are not. In comparison to an overseas club such as SUFC our books do not look as good, with good reason.

interesting news but, maybe plans for a financial arrangement somewhere down the track???

Property investments and alike. All financial i belive, at least for the most part. Some money going to mariners, some shef, and some to turnball no doubt

Yeh, every few months theres a rumour of a player that might come over here, but they never amount to anything thus far. It seems as though the players themselves are not too keen to come over here.

as you said, more the players that are not keen

A couple of handy players on loan could make all the difference...and if it was to, think how much this relationship would come up smelling like roses. ESPECIALLY if the Jets struggled.

that will work pretty sweetly for Jets- Song would be a handy 4t visa player to have (assuming they get 3 others firstly!)
