Alen Stajcic believes he may have found the antidote to the “victim mentality” and “losing mindset” which has dogged Central Coast Mariners for the past five years.

After the stigma of successive wooden spoons, the vital signs have jolted back to life since the arrival of the former Matildas mentor and only holders Adelaide United stand in their way of an FFA Cup final appearance when the pair meet in Gosford next Wednesday night.
The resurrection of Stajcic’s own career after his controversial Matildas exit eight months ago is paralleling the rebirth of the Mariners.
But with an A-League ball yet to be kicked in anger, Stajcic isn’t letting an FFA Cup run mask the magnitude of the task he’s taken on.
“We’re looking to progress week by week and aren’t getting ahead of ourselves and thinking we’ve achieved anything approaching greatness just yet,” he said.

“It’s about building belief and confidence.
"When a club has been losing for the better part of five years it’s a matter of changing that whole mindset, from the front office to the players.
“In any sporting team that hasn’t been winning for a while there’s maybe a bit of the victim mentality, blaming other people and maybe also a lack of accountability and responsibility.
“It’s too easy to fall into that way of thinking but all those things seep in at some point.
“On top of that there’s probably been a lack of confidence from players in their own ability and that of the team.
“As coaching staff rebuilding that has been a starting point for us.”
Within the context of the finite resources available to him, Stajcic contends he’s received sufficient backing from owner Mike Charlesworth to fuel a Mariners revival.

“When I first took on the job there was a lot of openness and transparency about what we can and can’t do,” he explained.
“I took on the role under those conditions and everybody has been very supportive from the CEO to the board.
“We know other clubs have more resources but we have to make sure we are smart and efficient and make the best use of everything we’ve got.
“At the moment we’re putting in place things that don’t cost money like effort, time and a sense of accountability, belief and confidence.
“All the things important in building the foundations of a successful and sustainable team don’t necessarily cost much.”
Stajcic is working to bring the best out of players like Danny De Silva, Ruon Tongyik, Sammy Silvera and former Socceroo Tommy Oar, all of whom have yet to realize their full potential.

The club are also on the market for one more addition - most likely a striker - before they begin their season at Western Sydney Wanderers' gleaming new Bankwest Stadium home on October 12.
“We want the right player with the right characteristics to come into our team,” he said. “We have a really good culture at the moment.
"There’s a lot of hunger and determination to succeed. I think we’re starting to see a little bit of that chemistry out on the pitch.
“We’re not reading too much into pre-results or even our FFA Cup results.
“I feel the competition will be a lot tighter this year than last and the difference between the top and the bottom has narrowed.
“We have to get to a position where we believe we’re a genuine chance of winning every match, rather than players running onto the pitch with a false bravado.”
With his Matildas dismissal still the subject of debate over its seemingly unjust nature, Stajcic is reveling his return to clubland.
“In a lot of respects, it’s a lot more enjoyable going to work day-to-day trying to fix football problems, rather than waiting two or three months (with the national team),” he said.
“It’s been rewarding and enjoyable and I don’t really think about what others think about me. Enough has been written and said.
“I’m just grateful for the opportunity the Mariners have given me.

The nightmare is over for Central Coast Mariner Tommy Oar.
Fit-again, and feeling as confident as he ever has, the 27-year-old is ready to help fire the Mariners back up the Hyundai A-League ladder.
Oar - who shot into the Caltex Socceroos spotlight and earned a move to Eredivisie club FC Utrecht in 2010 on the back off his Hyundai A-League introduction with Brisbane Roar - is ready to consign his injury woes to the past.
“Everything is looking good for this season, and I feel as confident as I have," Oar told www.aleague.com.au.
The Australian returned from a knee injury sustained in February of last season in July. He says he's growing from strength to strength, and is ready to make an impact for the Mariners in 2019/20.

“For me it was just a matter of making sure I was thorough in my recovery and getting everything right to come back 100%, and I can’t wait for the A-League to start again and help the team achieve a lot of success which is what I wanted to do last year.”
“I missed most of the season more or less and that was extremely frustrating, I wanted to come back to the Mariners and help the team have a lot of success last year, so it was frustrating for me to watch from the sidelines.
“With the medical staff through the back end of last season and the off-season just gone I worked really hard to get myself back to full fitness, and since we started pre-season I’ve been feeling really good, training fully and playing all the matches.
“I’m definitely feeling fit, and just looking forward to the games to start, really.”
While Oar has continued to rebuild strength and confidence in his body, he and his teammates have been adjusting to the methods of coach Stajcic, who has had his first full pre-season on Gosford.
“Staj’s big philosophy is to win every moment in the game,” Oar said.
“That’s how we approach training every day; you have to give training your all every day as it’s very physically and mentally demanding, and that’s how he pushes his players to new levels.
“I think last year we conceded too many goals, so that’s one thing we’ve looked to address.
“Defending from the front, and the whole team staying united defensively to make sure we are fixed on that front.
“We had (Stajcic) at the end of last season as well so we got a bit of a taste, but we’ve been working really hard and all the boys are buying into what he wants to do this season.
“He’s brought in some really exciting, young attacking players and more experienced midfielders as well so we’ve got a really good blend of experience and youth; I think that will hold us in good stead.

“We’ve really bought into what he wants to do, we’re working hard and we’re getting there.”

“We’ve got Daniel De Silva who is back and looking good in training, we’ve got Kim Eun-Sun, the new Korean who is a really good leader on the pitch and I think he will surprise a lot of people this year.
“We’ve got some really good talented players; we’ve never played together before so we’re still learning to play together but I think it’s going well and we’re improving every week.
“We’ve played a lot of friendlies and all the results have been pretty good, so I think everything is looking good.”
Of course, results on the pitch will need to continue for the 2012/13 Champions to get back to the Hyundai A-League summit.

“We just really want to give the fans something to cheer about.

Sooo... Having just listened to this podcast on the origins of "Cyril the Swan", I may be drawing all of the wrong conclusions, but it is clear to me that 'Captain Yellowbeard' and the Admiral should be taking a leaf out of the Barbecue bottle's book, getting more rowdy to engage the fans, rather than the other way around! I'm looking forward to the lot in an all-out brawl with Benny in the second round
In all seriousness, for anyone not familiar with 'The Dollop' or the story of Cyril the Swan, it's worth a listen if you have a quite hour-and-a-half, for the rest of yas, I shouldn't have to state that
