ccmfans.net is the Central Coast Mariners fan community, and was formed in 2004, so basically the beginning of time for the Mariners. Things have changed a lot over the years, but one thing has remained constant and that is our love of the Mariners. People come and go, some like to post a lot and others just like to read. It's up to you how you participate in the community!

If you want to get rid of this message, simply click on Join Now or head over to https://www.ccmfans.net/community/register/ to join the community! It only takes a few minutes, and joining will let you post your thoughts and opinions on all things Mariners, Football, and whatever else pops into your mind. If posting is not your thing, you can interact in other ways, including voting on polls, and unlock options only available to community members.

ccmfans.net is not only for Mariners fans either. Most of us are bonded by our support for the Mariners, but if you are a fan of another club (except the Scum, come on, we need some standards), feel free to join and get into some banter.

This will be interesting.......

Nothing ventured and all that.

There has been an interesting debate on Twitter about what/how to rebuild our active support.

How and why it got where it is has been the subject of much debate and isn't worth revisiting but it would be interesting to see what others think could/should be done to build it back up.

That's not a criticism of the guys who are involved and do a shit load of hard work week in week out.

This is an interesting topic, so thanks for putting it back on the agenda FFC.

I think you shouldn't be so quick quick to dismiss discussing the why's and wherefore's of what happened to the active support. It's always been a mystery to me, as has the crash in activity of this forum. Are the two linked? It seemed to me that almost overnight, a dozen or so forumites, many of whom made up the backbone of the contributions, stopped posting on this forum. All I can say is thank God for those that stayed! Without this place, life as a Mariners supporter would be diminished.

So, my observations of what append to the active support.

Things seemed to be going along swimmingly until the FFA decided to sell reserved seating in the active support bays for all A-league clubs. At the Mariners, this seemed to have a decisive effect as those casuals that wanted to go into Bay 16 were ushered out due to not having a ticket. Is this correct?

It also coincided with a small group of dickheads that used to trash other peoples opinions on this forum. I remember the days where it was difficult to make a post without some smartarse replying with a negative comment, with the effect of shutting down any meaningful comment or debate.

It seemed to me that that negative vibe on the forum, which seemed to go under the pseudonym of the Coastie Boys, manifested itself to a small group in the active support. Whilst vocal, they weren't a group that a fat middle-aged guy like myself felt comfortable associating with. I felt more comfortable with having a more formal structure and a president, like skeletor... for those that remember him (and his lovely wife). I liked paying my annual dues, having merchandise available in the Kendall bar, pre-game videos, etc. It's been about 3 seasons since I've stepped inside the Leaguesie, let alone the Kendall.

So I guess my answer to your question FFC, would be to make the supporters group more formal. Rather than just have this "organic" active support, re-establish a structure. Have a president, have paying members, let the supporters know what the management structure is. As things stand now, we have the Yellow Army... a faceless entity which expresses opinions on FaceBook (and other media). No one is held accountable for their comments, which results in the average punter, like myself, feeling a bit alienated from the core group.

That's my opinion... I may need to borrow your helmet! :)

Its a funny one this one.

We don't have enough of the "young ones" for them to make it on their own.
We also don't have enough of the "old ones" for them to make it on their own.
Also the 2 seem to be mutually exclusive. Unfortunately it will require a collaborative approach between the 2 distinct age groups & that will need a whole lot of humble pie to be consumed.
The thing that will get the active support going again is for the people willing to actively support, to worry about the end result first & foremost & not particularly how it's reached. How is that reached, I'm not sure but I bet you'd be able to sell the solution off in book on conflict resolution.

well yes the western (and eastern stands) additions are simple, SO WHAT!!!,
if you actually listen, it also ebbs and flows with the tempo of the game, secondly
it is one of the few clubs i have seen the stands (plebs, members and platinum, regardless)
actually get involved, DONT whinge about it and kill it off. . .

SO

A few suggestions,
1) boost the dynamic of W & E stands buy putting people in various parts of the ground? to go along with what bay 16 is doing

2) make everyone that is near and within 16 feel included, i left primarily cos it was a closed circuit. as opposed to being in the old spirit point as a 10 year old, and +30 were teaching me the words etc.

3) stop arguing and creating splinter groups, (coastie boys, marinators, yellow army) call it "Bay 16" or something and get on with the purpose intended, ala WSW

4) solidify!!! everytime i look at 16 its sporadic, like everyone thinks the next person has nits rabies and HIV at the same time, thus your sound is lost, condense into one third of the bay and go nuts, then let the blow ins fill in above or below. . .

and speaking of WSW, take a leaf out of their book, the structure, the control, the amazing dynamics that they create, jsut by using their arms!!!

or better still, ask them to join in at some games!!! i,e, the next FC match :D

Every time I hear this song I think of bay 16 singing:-

Every time we score a goal
We want the crowd to sing as a whole
Mara Mara... Mariners!
Mara Mara... Mariners!
Mara Mara... Mariners!
Oh Oh Oh Oh OhhhhhhhOhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
Mara Mara...Mariners!
Mara Mara...Mariners!
Mara Mara...Mariners!
Oh Oh Oh Oh OhhhhhhhOhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

I like it Style!

I think Scottmac is pretty bang on.

I think it would take a pretty special "leader" to bridge both parties. So I kind of feel like we may even need the clubs assistance in this... Lawrie to help bring the disparate groups together?

And...

Help make bay 16 the place to be.

Have the players, always go to the bay to kick out balls pre game, throw shirts post game. Members draw AND active supporters draw each week... Radio announcers alway doing interviews out of the bay. Anything and everything that could add appeal to being in the bay. Mel Mclaughlin kissing booth etc...

Trying to think outside the box... Club sells/someone sponsors 1000 Active memberships at a ridiculous low cost? But then they can still just go sit in general I guess...

Like Jerem and others I've suggested trying to get the whole crowd rocking before, it's actually pretty impressive how many people will join in 3 clap. Surely we could manage a couple more of the right kind of chants with the right kind of motivation...
