Better than the hammers. and playing CL football

You are kidding? Surely he is better off going to spain and learning something new to his football, not just because athletico are a big club either. He will get nothing new out of england, he has been there long enough, playing against different teams, in a different place, that play different styles, where ref's pick focus on different things will only make him a higher quality defender come the world cup.

Goodpost.

Socceroos captain Lucas Neill signs with Spanish La Liga's Atletico Madrid

Lucas Neill has finally settled on a new club, putting pen to paper with Spanish La Liga side Atletico Madrid.

London newspaper The Daily Mail reported that Neill had signed a two-year deal worth almost 2million (A$3.84 million) a year.

He was offered more money and a longer term contract by a club in the Gulf, but it is believed the 31-year-old turned down the deal because he was swayed by the chance to play in the UEFA Champions League.

The 31-year-old hasnt played any top-level football this season after turning down a new deal at Barclays Premier League club West Ham United.

I am happy for him ... a very strong club and hopefully he will learn a thing or two ...

Great result. As Jesus pointed out even better than playing in the premier league this season imo also. Spain has a serious array of attacking players for him to warm up for the WC on and having our captain with more experience in a different/more patient style of build and play will only be to our advantage.

Socceroos captain Lucas Neill is yet to confirm his club future despite reports he has signed with Spanish giants Atletico Madrid.

The 31-year-old defender was offered more money and a longer-term contract by a club "in the Gulf" but he was swayed by the chance to play in the Champions League, Britain's Daily Mail reported on Monday.

"Lucas Neill has agreed to join Atletico Madrid on a two-year deal worth STG2 million ($A3.84 million) a year," the newspaper said.

Other stories had suggested Atletico had withdrawn their offer.

Neill, who is a free agent after his contract with English Premier League side West Ham expired at the end of last season, his management and the La Liga club have not announced any deal.

He has taken his time to commit on his future, with the European league season underway.

Australia coach Pim Verbeek has encouraged his players to take part in as much top-level football as possible ahead of next year's World Cup in South Africa.

it's not good at all, as i was leaving for work i had fox sports news on and i heard that Martin Jol (Ajax Boss) say that Lucas's camp called him and he wanted to play for Ajax.
as Martin Jol wanted to have him it wasn't the right time with the transfer window about to close.

something under those lines, sorry no link, but if your home and have Fox put on 513 :)

but Lucas Neill is a free agent (not contracted) so teh transfer window isn't shut for him.....how strange of Jol to say something like that.

He didn't mean they couldn't take him, but that they had done all their spending basically and coming so late in the window Ajax had not been able to be taken into their considerations as they would have liked to.

Maybe Sunderland?

http://www.theworldgame.com.au/aussies-abroad/black-cats-revive-neill-interest-233297

English Premier League club Sunderland have revived their interest in signing Socceroos captain Lucas Neill.

The Black Cats are reportedly willing to offer the 31-year-old defender STG40,000 ($A76,000) a week to join the club.
The Daily Mail and The Sun newspapers reported on Wednesday that Sunderland were trying to strike an 18-month deal worth STG3 million ($A5.74 million) to secure Neill.
Both papers said manager Steve Bruce was keen to add Neill to his list of seven new recruits to help solve the club's injury crisis.
The former West Ham and Blackburn player has been searching for a new club after his contract at Upton Park expired at the end of last season.
Neill has been linked to several clubs, including Spain's Atletico Madrid, but has so far failed to find a new home.

Without doubt, but I suspect the Madrid fall through could well have been that he wasn't guaranteed a starting spot either. Going somewhere to sit on the bench in the lead up to a WC would be almost as bad as having no club... I SAID ALMOST LUCAS!
