I'm not 100% percent sold on Caceras either.

I'd grade Hutcho a C and Caceras a C+ on their performances this year.

Hutch had a range of D to B-, where as Caceres ranged from a D- to an A at times. The kid has potential, needs to reign it in.

Caceras looked more at home when paired with Monty & given control of the attack.
He & Hutch didn't gel - They don't suit each other & want a similar role.

Hence they will fight it out next year to partner Monty.

They both play well with Monty

Caceras is not a #10 in my eyes either.

but what if we continue with 433 (playing 541 or 4141 defence) all 3 playing together looked great!

Hutch ----------- caceres
--------- monty ---------

Worked much better than...

------- caceres --------
Hutch---------monty

As we prove season after season, there is much more to any team than what is on paper or the obvious. Hutch frustrates me sometimes, though I've never doubted his quality. But i genuinely fear that when he does retire, it will have the biggest impact on our form since the loss of Jedinak.

Hopefully after retirement he will stay within the club for a very long time, as I suspect he may be a key ingredient the secret sauce responsible for our famous Mariners spirit. There are plenty of DM's in the world... but leadership and the power to unify a team and keep spirits up, is something quite different.

My biggest fear is him retiring and the club losing its way. Hutch puts a certain level of cohesiveness to the squad, even when they or in particular he isn't doing very well, he still attempts to get the most out of him and the rest of the squad.

I don't see how he could leave the club. Maybe it will happen, but I definitely see him becoming a coach either at the club, with Patty for NYL squad, or something to do with the Academy.

I can't believe someone even asked this question... Invaluable to the squad particularly in this transitioning phase where new guys need to know what this club is all about. Ended up being a very good choice from Arnie to appoint Hutch captain and he won us a toilet seat as captain. What an absolute legend of our club.

Every so often a club, in whatever code, gets a player who embodies the essence of the club; he isn't the most skilful player on the books, and if that's all you want then he wouldn't be in the team. However, he lives & breathes the club, he bleeds the club colours, and in doing so he lifts & inspires everyone else to play above themselves and achieve things they wouldn't have been able to do elsewhere & elsewhen. Such a player must be kept on the playing list until he decides to retire and then the club must bend over backwards to keep him in some non-playing role. His influence is so vital the club would go backwards without him. We have such a one in Hutch.

Magpie mariner, I "liked" this but that just doesn't seem enough. Spot on. What a great post. Perfect summation, well done.

Hutch's future lies in the grass roots development of the game. He is fantastic with the kids. Every time he walks out he chats to the kids & makes them feel special. He has the talent & personality to be an ambassador of some sort in the U12>. He gets the kids excited about playing/watching football. IMO

Of course not. But it's Monty as captain next year for me with Caceres by his side. Hutch will have plenty of chances to prove himself over the course of the season. He's too important to the club and at times was excellent this year.

He is good for another year even if he spends more time on the bench. His value off and on the pitch is invaluable.

His passing accuracy this year was 91% which is better than Monty on 81% and is the best or close to the best in the league.

How many passes did he attempt that exceeded 10m though?

I`m not Hutcho`s biggest fan but I do see the value of having him around the place for a long time to come.
I think he should be named as the club captain with Monty given the team captain`s job.
That way he can be transitioned into retirement in say 2-3 years. Then Monty can do the same.

I tend to agree with FP & think that Hutch has more to offer but Caceres is the future.
In saying that if Hutch was to suddenly retire the impact would be immense.
Therefore, Mossy needs an exit strategy for Hutch.
Something along the lines of Hutch being Club Captain with Monty taking over as team captain.
That way When Caceres replaces him in games the impact is lessened.

As a player Hutcho is no loss at all, in fact I'm sure we almost never lose when he is out suspended....but as a leader I'm sure he is vital.
With Charlesworth in charge ........who seams to permeate disharmony and revels in rocking the boat....a loyal and dedicated soldier like Hutch to lead the troops regardless of the backroom machinations seams more important than ever.

Before Hutcho even retires, the club must enter into negotiations of having him remain at the club as a coach or youth coach in some fashion.
Unless, of course, he wants to leave and go back to Morwell or whatever. But if he wants to stick around the club then they should do everything they can to facilitate that. Make it clear they're not pushing him into retirement, but making it clear to him that he is important enough to the team and fans that we want him around and the announcement of him retiring without any guarantee that he is still with us would prove costly.
