Heffernan to Huddersfield

Orite people

Huddersfield fan here. Rumour is spreading that we are set to sign Dean Heffernan from you lot this week.

Just wondering what you think of him? What are his main attributes and what does he struggle with?

Hopefully he won't mind the weather over here too much. Should settle in ok as we have quite a few aussies playing for the Huddersfield Giants

Cheers  :postcount:

pros - pace, willingness to attack, willingness to tackle, he can play left back (which not another soul in the country can play it seems)

cons - composure on the ball, gets caught out of position after attacking forays, his tackling can be 'interesting' sometimes, as can his crossing...

tbh - i think in league one his best spot might be striker or as a wide man - he's about 6' 3" in imperial terms and quick and strong and can finish.

Cheers

He is being signed as a left back by all accounts

Yeah, the Giants are in the super league. Finished 4th last season i think but did rubbish in the play offs. They share our stadium

:goodpost: Yeah it is a cracking stadium but isn't conjusive to generating a good atmosphere with it being open in the corners

What sort of attendances do you get?

averaging just short of 8000 this year. we peaked at ~13000 the year we won the league.

Watched Huddersfield beat Wycombe 6-0 earlier in the year on TV, look like a good fast playing footballing side who are good on the break. Heffernan is no way a striker, he is a wide left player who has played most of his A league career at LB but thinks of himself as a left winger hence he tends to play wide left. He's quick, has a good engine and is aggressive, sometimes reckless, in the tackle. Makes good runs from deep which better players than those at the Mariners may spot. On his day very effective and good crosser of the ball. Defensively he is vulnerable to players who cut inside which is when he is most likely to commit a silly foul. When he decides he wants to be a disciplined defender nobody gets past him but he needs other other defenders around him to make him maintain that discipline. He should do well at League One and we all wish him well.

Oh, BTW, nowhere near 6'3'; I'm 6''5" and I saw him in the local supermarket and he is way shorter than me, poss 6'0" maybe 6'1"

Should prove a quality signing for your guys.
Been in excellent form - great pace, can beat a man and good fighting spirit.

Not a rumour really tbh....it's happening.

As dibo said, he's quick and always willing too attack but can get caught out.  Played very well for the last month of the season, when he's not on form can be very average IMO.  That said I personally think he'll do ok at that level having watched quite a bit of it in my time.

Useful player.

Can score goals and attacks with vigour and pace. Aggressive.

Fancies himself as a winger but lack of technique mean needs best suited to Left Back.  Not a striker in a million years!

Occasionally taken to school but generally sound.

I reckon he will be a good signing, especially with more experienced players around him to keep him honest.

Of course, left backs don't need to be technically sound as their role is just tackle and punt, right Wombat? ::)

Having seen a good deal of League One, I'd say he'll do well going forward but don't expect him to be a rock at the back. Just depends on how he settles. Suffers from players running at him.

I'm sure there's an option to stay and should that happen Mariners would receive a fee

Oh dear. What we need is a rock at the back who doesn't suffer from players running at him.

Heff is a very good defender and uses his body and the lines very well. Just make sure your gaffer tells him defending is his job in the games that you need hime to sit back. If he is asked to attack you won't have to ask twice, he naturally likes to push forward.

For those who think Heff struggles with people running at him, think back to earlier this season when he owned Kofi Danning and Tommy Oar. He's not that bad with people running at him.
