Finally game day & my niece schedules her 18th tonight....grrr.
I`m tipping a very tight game with limited opportunities.
Both sides will concentrate on a tight defence with quick counter attacks.
Hopefully we`ll win but i`m tipping a draw...

Note:post your game tips on the tipping comp thread

Outplayed by Brisbane.

Matt Ryan easily our best, kept us in the game, could have been 6-0.

Yes we have lots of strikers to choose from but they are all shit. They could have poached a couple but were rendered ineffective by decent defence.

Pellegrino was MIA, then couldn't find his passes. McGlinchey and Bozanic MIA.

Very surprised and impressed with Porter at CB.

really cant stand those brisbane f**ks!
as for tonight, started well then went missing and ended well - its the first game of the season, not time for panic but it is a worry we seem to have a mental issue around getting over this team

1st half no composure, 2nd half was better. Porter was good, Matt Ryan excellent again. Baird & Pellegrino ordinary. Oh well, there's always next week.

Thought Ryan was superb.

Thought back four were suspect apart from Pedj. Porter was not impressive for mine..... Not terrible but slack at marking and positionally suspect.

Can't agree that olly was missing in action, I thought him and griffiths were good.

Me badly missed Bernie upfront. I thought McBreen looked very hungry when he came on.

Overall we were ok but we didn't press in midfield and our link play with strikers was poor. Also back four were pulled around like novices.

Bit of work to do.

3pt. Ryan
2pt. Bojic
1pt. Olly and Griffo

Ryan was brilliant.

We played way, way too defensively. Right from the first whistle we played like we were terrified of Roar, like they had thoroughly humbled us before and all we wanted to do was somehow hold them off, and hope that we scored against the run of play.

Not going to work - the more defensive we play, the more goals we concede. Been that way all through last season.

The strikers didn't have the numbers in support - it was like the midfielders had been told not to wander up field. Watching them stop 2/3 of the way up the field was like watching and U/10 defender stop on a dime as soon as he sees he's about to cross halfway.

NFI why Arnold took off Baird - him and Simon worked well together and that was our best chance of a goal. Without him Simon looked very, very lonely up front - completely outnumbered with no support.

We boot the ball from the backs too much instead of working the ball out - and when the ball got up front, we just seemed to punch the ball through and hope somebody can run onto it and do something with it rather than work the ball around. We simply don't have players with enough speed or flair to achieve that against a very well organised defence.

Also, Roar put a lot of individual pressure on our players and there was a lot of panicking, particularly after that goal. What was really scary is that Roar seemed to get better after that goal as well - looks like the team to watch again this season.

Way too many stupid fouls and stupid cards - I really don't like getting a reputation as one of the filthiest teams in the league, and I don't like how much those fouls and cards cost us.

We did keep fighting to the end, which was positive to see, and for most of the game the tactic of standing off them did seem to work well - but I was just thinking to myself that we're defending way too much, and it doesn't matter how good you are - if you spend 90 minutes defending, then the other team IS going to score. Just as I thought that, they scored. Allow the other team to control the match too much and you're inviting trouble.

McBreen played well, and Kwassie seemed to want a more attacking play than the defensive tactics we were using.

Nice writeup Capn.

Bloody Brisbane! Such a great passing game they play... neat little triangles all the way up the field, and very patient. I think we had a few moments when we started doing the same, but seemed to get impatient and turn the ball over too easily.

How good was Matty Ryan! I think Brisbane are gonna go on now and make a few other teams look like amateurs, so we probably came away from that one not too badly in the end.

Have to wonder how long we can keep hold of Matty Ryan before he is snapped up by a European/Middle East team.

Any defeat is disappointing but it was the manner of the defeat that disappointed me the most. Last season Brisbane set the standard, a very high standard, for the League; by season end the Mariners had worked wonders to close the gap. The last two visits to Suncorp had seen them completely unafraid and taking the game to the Roar. We saw none of that the yesterday, while Brisbane looked to be playing the same beautiful, intelligent quality football the Mariners seem to have gone backwards. Where was the possession game? Where was the mental attitude? We were fortunate to get away with 0-1 after being out played for so many patches of the game. In Mat Ryan we are priveleged to see a future Socceroo great, he was magnificent; Zwaanswyk was unlucky to make the error as he had a dominant game, Bojic worked hard in another great contest with Broich, Porter, the great club man, gave his all in an unfamiliar and unexpected role (you have to question our so-called depth when Arnie prefers to play a diminutive light-weight midfielder at CB instead of Sainsbury or Gallagher - can't see those two with us next year), Rose was off-colour. The mid-field worked hard but to very little effect, they allowed Mitch Nicholls way too much space and failed to dictate terms. Simon worked hard and held the ball up well and Baird was very unlucky that his excellent header was cleared by Matt Smith. I was diappointed that Arnie did not have the team in the right frame of mind, he set them up well last year and this year has to ensure the team improves, not regresses.
