Would tend to agree, though I think our front line is going to be one that needs a bit of tweaking and thinking Arny will be looking for a good combo up front. Bernie will come off the bench but really hoping he shines through this year. If Clarky can bulk him up a little, I reckon he can be a real threat if given the chance.

Arnold names 19 for Roar challenge

Central Coast Mariners coach Graham Arnold has today named a provisional 19-player squad for his side’s much anticipated first game of the Hyundai A-League season against Brisbane Roar.

Over the off-season, Arnold sought to build considerable depth in his playing squad, stating publicly he was eager to attain two quality players for each position on the pitch.

That strategy has paid dividends for the wily tactician, with the talented group of players Arnold has compiled giving the coach a welcome headache when it comes to finalising his squad.

While captain Alex Wilkinson (forearm), as well midfielders Mustafa Amini (groin), Stuart Musialik (adductor) and John Hutchinson (on loan) will definitely miss the trip to Suncorp Stadium, Arnold has named every other player in his first squad announcement of the season.

With two training sessions left before the team heads north, Arnold indicated his mind wouldn’t be made up until just before the team bus departs for Sydney Airport.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the way to boys have performed this pre-season,” Arnold said. “They’ve been absolutely first class on and off the pitch, and this is one of the reasons why I’ve got such a difficult decision to make.”

“We have looked to build a squad with the most Australian players of all the Hyundai A-League teams, working within the salary cap and unable to splash out on big name marquees or foreign signings like other clubs.

“But there’s an advantage in that, given we now have incredible competition for a place in the squad, let alone the starting eleven.”
Meanwhile, new recruit Adriano Pellegrino said the team is “buzzing” leading into the clash with Roar.

The former Perth Glory man has been a consistent performer for the Mariners throughout the pre-season.

“There’s been a really good feel around training this week. It’s been a long pre-season so we’re just eager to get up to Brisbane and perform,” Pellegrino said.

I hate the fact we can only choose the 3 outfield players on the bench when we have a squad like ours this year. Imagine the options available that could influence a game with a larger bench.

I'll be heading up for this one, and hoping for some sweet revenge.

I saw a story on this a couple of days ago, the coaches are pushing the FFA to increase the number of players they can have on the bench. It's very limiting at the moment!

http://www.smh.com.au/sport/soccer/coaches-seek-heavier-bench-press-20110929-1kzc5.html

A-LEAGUE coaches are pushing Football Federation Australia to boost the number of players on the substitute bench in a bid to increase their tactical options and enable them to blood more younger players.

Teams name three outfield players on the bench along with a replacement goalkeeper, but Adelaide United boss Rini Coolen is leading the charge for extra numbers.

The Dutchman wants seven replacement players at his disposal - six outfield men and a goalkeeper - although others would settle for five, including a goalkeeper.

He said Adelaide's final pre-season game against Melbourne Victory last week, when he made multiple use of the bench, only reinforced the point.

''It's good to have seven players on the bench for the future,'' he said.

''You can make more substitutions. Young players get a chance in a game like this and it's what you can do in the future in the competition.''

The clubs have asked the league's governing body to lift the limit on bench players so that it is in line with other countries, but cost is the big issue.

Under the current system, the league pays for a travelling party of 20 - 15 players plus coaches and medical staff. It says it simply cannot afford to underwrite the extra costs of even one extra player.

It is believed FFA chiefs were prepared to let clubs bring extra bench players to matches at their own expense, but the clubs themselves ruled that out on the grounds of competitive inequity, citing chiefly the difficulties Wellington Phoenix and Perth Glory would have with an extra large travelling bill.

Melbourne Heart's football director, John Didulica, said yesterday his club's head coach, John van't Schip, would back his countryman.

''It's something we clearly would support. It would give a coach a lot more tactical flexibility and options to change a game.

''At the moment with only three and a keeper you have to try to pick all-rounders, or one defender, one midfielder, one attacker.

''If the bench was bigger there would more options.''

Victory's head coach, Mehmet Durakovic, also agreed.

''It would be fantastic to bring youngsters in and give them a taste of the environment, in front of big crowds, giving them a chance to understand what it means to be a professional footballer,'' he said.

Meanwhile, Heart officials say the club's former skipper, Simon Colosimo, is going nowhere after rumours suggested the former Socceroo was looking for a way out as the new season approaches.

''He is a required player for us … he is our former captain and a very good player,'' Heart football operations manager John Didulica said.

It would be great, and would really allow coaches to display their tactical prowess. However, unfortunately its the owners that have the final say and the cost of shipping extra players and cost of paying extra match payments (for appearances on the bench) seems to outweigh the benefits.

Nonetheless, i'm predicting 2-1 to us. Baird and Pelles to score. Baird to score within the first 15 mins.

Served his suspension preseason v Wellington.

Porter will start as stopper. Saturday will be exactly one year from when he did his knee.

Porter has played there before, I believe alongside dutchy and Griffiths in front he'll be fine, may see Griffiths sit a little deeper.

Surely the boys will be up for this 1

I'd say that's a big factor - however, I'd think that having more players on the bench would allow the coach more options to 'blood' young players too. Gives you the freedom to allocate more bench space to the untested players, thus giving more options to let them have a run depending how the match is going.

Anxiously awaiting the game...

Not overly excited about Brad or Sainsbury at stopper. I've heard good things about Sam Gallagher, is he a centre back?

Gallagher is a left sided CB, can also play LB...but we signed him as a CB ;). ANd that's where he plays for national teams, and he played CB (with Doig) at the youth match I went to last year.

Simply put...it's much harder to blood youngsters in defence as opposed to attackers. If Bernie screws up...thats a missed chance at goal...frustrating, but no detrimental. If a young defender screws up, then it can lead to a goal.
And we are playing the reigning champs
(I think that 'logic' I heard SAF say years back...wise words)

Every year I tip the Mariners to finish 6th; as I am a very poor tipster I have only once had the misfortune to be correct ;)However, this year I am going to break with tradition and boldly declare that at season's end the Mariners will the be team holding the Toilet Seat aloft. This game is what football is all about: a real tough test for a team that has aspirations to be the best. It is quite incredible to think that the team with possibly the deepest squad in the comp should have four players unavailable for the first game but, in Arnie I trust, if he goes with Sainsbury it will be because he believes he can do the job, likewise if Brad Porter makes a succesful comeback I will be delighted. I am expecting the Mariners to make an early statement and win this game 2-0.

Game day at last :pirashoot: :pirashoot: . It feels like a lifetime since last season.

Be good to win this one and erase some of the demons of the grand final (which I still can't bring myself to watch!).

Anyone else think that Griffiths may be moved into the back four to cover Wilko? I think this happened at one stage last season?

Gunna hit the lounge to watch all three A-League games with beer in hand - can't wait!!

About time, hey!

I think Wilko will be replaced with someone else, i.e. not someone from the starting 11 that normally plays in a different position, and everyone else will stick to their usual role. We have depth in the squad, so we can handle situations like this without putting people out of place.

Mariners 3-1 or 3-2 for me... think there will be lots of goals either way.
