There has been many a discussion about winning a grand final and winning a minor premiership which is most important my view is winning the grand final it is the way we do it in australia and i love it the atmosphere the cheers and the heartbreak (we all have felt that) you cant beat it. The Minor premiership is good yes the most consistant team all year but it makes for a boring end to the year if a team is so far a head it could be all over 3 to 4 weeks out. The Mariners will win both this year so we will all be happy no matter which one you like. GO YOU YELLOW!!!

There is nothing MINOR about the Premiership .. why do people keep saying that???

Does it come from some other sport?

To my mind if you win the Premiership you don't have to worry about the GF in terms of qualifying for the ACL.

Normally I would say the premiership. However, having lost three grand finals I think that for us, at the moment, a grand final win is more important.

The Premiership. Grand Finals in domestic football is like pineapple on a pizza. Go to any country where football is relevant to the general population, tell them your team won the GF and you will be met with blank stares. Tell them your team won the League and you will get a comment along the lines of "Well in!"

The Grand Final is the HAL equivalent of the Carling Cup- but with only half the League teams competing in it. Saying that, it'll be nice to win the toilet seat knowing that the Scummers have NOTHING on us anymore- bar a wooden spoon!

I don't think either is more important, I would rate them equally. I bet the people who voted for the Premiership still got upset every Grand Final we lost!

Australian sporting culture is dominated by the concept of the finals series. I've been brought up on it and have suffered the trials and tribulations of the system first hand since the age of 5. For me, a Grand Final win is the ultimate.

I can see the arguement for the Premiership being more important, and I conceede that it is a true reflection of the most consistant, if not the best, team over an entire season... but do we remember the Premiers or the Champions? (and be honest).

If you were to ask me if I'd hand back our Premiers Plate for the Championship and a win over the scum, then I'd say YES.

agree with pjennings and dibo.... being a "traditionalist" first past the post is usually the most important, but I'd like us to put our demons to rest and ram it up all those fans from other clubs/forums who think of us as chokers.....by doing the double

The Premiership is inarguable a far superior measure of which team is the best, however we seem to value grand final in Oz (although not all comps down here in Melbourne have a final series, oddly enough).

In this country, a grand final seems to be where all the glory lies, that's where the bragging rights are, therefore I'd prefer to win a grand final.

And that's even before I get into the issue of our 3 gf losses haunting us....

There are a few teams whose fans are hypocrites calling Mariners chokers. Adelaide- lead 1-0 over the Roar, 10 minutes later were losing 6-1. What about Sydney? 1-0 with a minute of injury time remaining, lose 2-1. Not even we would lose that match. Even if it were a GF, and we were down to 10 men.

I guess the haters would rather brand a superior team to theirs as chokers than acknowledge how good the Roar are at scoring quick goals in succession. Certainly weren't the first or the last to be the opposition team...

I think people might be referring to more than one grand final.

I don't see how being outgunned by a bigger spending team or dudded by match officials count as choking. Mind you, St George haters call it a choke pretty much anytime the Dragons lose in the NRL, so it's nothing new.

Will make it that much sweeter to stick the big middle digit up at the haters when we win the GF though! To win the double would be a two-fingered salute.

premiership ... its the first title on offer ... i guess for the mediocre teams top 6 is a good consolation. :p

i like the comparison of the finals cup series to the Carling Cup. I'd go further and rename the thing the A-League Cup. (With an FFA cup to come later.)

This is a bit from left field - but elevates the importance of the Premiership by a change of title to League Champions by diminishing the importance of the Grand Final.

Ideally, I'd like the positions 2-6 to fight it out for the ACL Qualification Cup.

This solution would give due credit to the League Champions, provide a cup for ACL Qualification and for the FFA to grab their money as well as highlighting in the public's mind the global nature of football.

yeah a much better separation i agree its less confusing. Distinct titles that way.

I do like how from day one FFA have really respected the Premiership, even if the presentations left a lot to be desired early on. Unfortunately its eggballer sports editors whose style guides insist on "Minor" premierships...

Football really has a major advantage over other sports by having a couple of pieces of important silverware each year. Premiership, League/finals cup, national cup one day. Spreads around the fun and less contrived than the equalising measures many resort to (drafts, strict caps etc)

So some folks would say the game needs to copy other sports in order to get acceptance. I'd say football has major differences/advantages that should be exploited more. (A second division is another for me, but won't veer off into that territory here!)
